Re: Random number generation in C++

Implemented a few ideas here, and got this crazyness: #include <windows.h> using namespace std; int main() { char ran; int x=1; srand(GetTickCount()); for(int i = 0; i<50; i--) { ran = rand()%256; if(i%1000000 == 0)//to throttle output { cout<<ran; i = 0; } } return 0; } I keep waiting for a cryptic...

Re: What font do you use for coding? What colour scheme?

I never thought to deviate from VS 05's default, but my teacher uses Comic Sans MS at 24 point type. It bugs me.

Heh. The lack of "Hackability" being one of the selling points.

Re: Fractal 3D space shooter. Linux, OS X, Windows.

It is beautiful. It would work better as art, I think, with a camera just flying around at random.

I play Oblivion with an adventuring party, using a mod I can't recall the name of at the moment.

Re: Infinite queens on an infinite chessboard

I'm not a mathmind just yet, but if there are infinite Queens and infinite spaces, doesn't each space have a queen?

New OS's or old?

By "new", I mean Vista/XP and Leopard. Old reaches back to 1995ish.

Re: Strange but false

Due to the difficulties in calculating the exact surface area of a sphere, there is a small patch on Earth that no-one owns, and is not international territory.
However, no-one knows where or how big it is.

Sadness can be funny! This comic, I believe, raises the question, "what is love?"

I only got to see that movie once it had cycled through to the Movies for a Dreary Weekend. I spent two hours shouting, "It doesn't WORK like that!".
Good comic.

Re: Random number generation in C++

Well, my class assignment was to make a Yahtzee game, so I think I have to make my own.
the code you posted isn't valid c++, for one thing.

Well, that's what they told me they were teaching...

Random number generation in C++

Okay, I'm trying to generate a 5d6 roll, using 5 d6's, not just from 5-30. So I tried seeding the rand function with the time every pass through the FOR loop, but I keep getting the same number all 5 times. int rollDice() { int val = 0; srand(GetTickCount()); val = rand() % 5 + 1; return val; } for(...

Re: OS migration

Yes, but the main reason I wanted to do this is to learn how the computer thinks. If I just use the frontend, it might as well be any other OS.

OS migration

Greetings, XKCD community. Recently, I tried to migrate from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, without much luck. Upon close examination of the experience, I think it is because all my life I have used GUI-mouse arrangements as opposed to command-line interfaces. Does anyone have advice on learning to speak ...
