Re: Rape Culture (Obvious Trigger Warning)

Let me throw something out here that I suspect will be unpopular, but I think is worth thinking about. I think that the cultural expectation that people should be monogamous promotes rape, because it makes it necessary for people to get all of the sex they want with one person. And, for almost ever...

Re: Rape Culture (Obvious Trigger Warning)

I never said it was a good situation. I fully agree that it's a bad situation, and probably should be the cue that this is a really bad and probably abusive relationship. However, while rape and emotional abuse may be related, they are not the same thing and should not be considered as such. If you ...

Re: Rape Culture (Obvious Trigger Warning)

"Sleep with me or I'm leaving you" is force, and what studies like that are designed to highlight - and what we're talking about as a part of rape culture - is that a lot of people don't see it as rape. I have to argue that in that particular case, there is no force being applied. There i...

Re: How to Stop People From Becoming Rapists

First, let us clearly define the problems 1) Our culture expects extreme sexuality from men. See most mass entertainment, rampant advertisements for male enhancement (making men as sexual as they "should" be), etc. This leads to the mentality that there is something wrong with men who are ...

Re: Rape Culture (Obvious Trigger Warning)

I don't think that anyone in this thread is arguing that our culture is not a rape culture. There is quite clear evidence that our society encourages or at the very least does not adequately discourage rape. If we agree that this is a problem, the next step is to figure out how to work on fixing it....

Re: "Where would they strike?" (hypothetical question)

Depends on who is doing the attacking. An external enemy who wants to cause maximum symbolic damage to Americans would probably attack Washington DC, thus taking out the center of government. This is, in my estimation, not a terribly likely event, but it is possible. A more likely case, an enemy who...

Currently, not much about relativity and almost nothing about tensors, but I'm willing to learn. You're saying that a photon at 1.499999x the Schwarzschild radius would slowly spiral into the black hole while one at 1.500001x the Schwarzschild radius would spiral out and one exactly at 1.5x would ci...

I'm still coming up with the same result, unless I'm mistaken (which I probably am) the observers in whatever is orbiting would see themselves as travelling at exactly the speed of light, but this is allowed unless I'm mistaken because time dilation means that to an observer in the moving body is al...

Lowest possible orbit around a black hole

If my back of the napkin calculations are correct, it should be possible to have a circular orbit INSIDE a black hole's event horizon. Orbital velocity: v=sqrt(GM/r). Event horizon radius: r=2GM/c^2 c^2=2GM/r c^2/2=GM/r Therefore v=sqrt(c^2/2) v=.70711c Could someone point out where I went wrong,or ...

Remember we are dealing with a perfect AI. For the sake of argument, let us assume that this AI emulates every neuron in the human brain and nervous system. The AI and human both have the goal of proving that they are human. The AI, then, could really be a human who believes he is an AI. So the que...

Is a machine concious of its surrondings? Some cars turn on their windshield wipers when it begins to rain, so it is reacting to external stimuli.
