Re: Thomas Fire

You guys get that in this case I'm not talking about a literal river right? (I mean, there is a literal river into which all this water drains, but nothing's built in its bed even though it's usually completely dry half the year and has barely a creek in it the other half). https://en.wikipedia.org/...

Re: Quantum Question

That doesn't seem to address my question to doogly at all. What you're saying sounds like my prior understanding of the situation, but what he's saying sounds like it contradicts that: like it implies that there are just as many possible states of the universe that, left to their own devices, would ...

Re: Quantum Question

So the only thing that stops a system that's locally evolving toward a lower-entropy state from continuing to do so is the fact that the rest of the universe, which is meanwhile in the process of evolving to a higher-entropy state, interferes? And the rest of the universe just happens to be on a tra...

Re: Quantum Question

Entropy doesn't always go up, it tends to. If you cherry pick a state, like one with a bunch of shrapnels all with momenta pointing back in towards a bomb, you can get entropy to go down. Cherry picking initial conditions makes entropic arguments very deflated. So if you cherry pick a state exactly...

Re: Quantum Question

I think the thing Jose is trying to ask about is exactly that entropic arrow of time. Entropy always goes up, so if you have a simulation of the universe that correctly models that property, and then you reverse the momenta of everything in that simulation, entropy is still going to go up in the fut...

Re: Thomas Fire / Atmospheric River

Whoever called "mudslides" was right. There's an "atmospheric river" (TIL) dumping all over the Thomas fire burn area for this whole week, and every neighborhood anywhere close to a hill (thankfully not including mine) is under mandatory evacuation again.

Re: Integrating Superpowers into Society

Trains are usually diesel-electric, and the diesel engine has a maximum output that it's capable of putting out, so having another power source available to hit peak demand could be helpful. Just like how grid power plants need to spin up extra generators to handle peak power demands, and the diffic...

Iron Man 3 seems to have been completely forgotten by the subsequent MCU continuity. Wasn't there some trailer showing Tony still having an ARC reactor in his chest? Re: My take on Godel's incompleteness theorems

Here's a stab at answering that philosophical question: Mathematics as a field is essentially exploring the abstract space of possibilities. Whatever happens to actually exist will, of course, be possible. It should thus be entirely unsurprising that some mathematical structures describe the things ...

The sense of "usury" I'm using is older, and I'm only using it because it's etymologically illustrative (a fee for a use is what defines rent) and shorter that writing "rent and interest" over and over again.

Medieval Catholicism (like modern Islam) hated money-lending at interest, but the feudal world absolutely loved land rent. Part of the reason anti-usury laws went away was because people work working around them with a combination of an interest-free loan, insurance, and rent, where rent did all the...

You can't argue with math; Money grows exponentially. That's not a property of "math", but of the economic system we've created. Remember, we could, if we as a society decided to, declare that if you "voluntarily" give a mugger your wallet, rather than be shot, then that's a leg...

The cost for payment on longer terms is higher, sure, but that's not the same thing as interest. That's more or less a special case of the kind of system I advocate.
