Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts (Random like the plague)

It's hard being a newb again. You wanna talk, but you can't until you search, and then you have to read. I'm ready to talk, hopefully there's just a page or 2 , then I can participate. Oh, nope, there's like 6 or 12 or 300 ... I don't even know how much I should read. I think I forgot how to act lik...

Re: Backward Incompatibility

Griffin - I think the reason was because of the "draconian error handling", I don't think people were ever going to feel like that's the kind of web we should have. And I think probably really due to how real XHMTL wasn't really supported by IE. As much as you hope people upgrade to the l...

Linux Distros

I use Ubuntu (doesn't everyone?) and the farthest I've ventured from that is basically using different desktop managers. I did try PCLinuxOS because some guy raved about it...but it didn't impress me and seemed very Windows-y ... ech! So, what Distribution is the best  or which ones do what yo...

Backward Incompatibility

The PS3 doesn't really play PS2 games (compatibility issues or no hardware support at all). XHMTL2 wasn't compatible with XHTML1 (though a moot issue now). IPv6 has no level of compatibility with the current IPv4 internet. Why are companies eschewing the former generations and the real hardware or s...

Re: "Workaround" discussion

Just wait until some random update ruins something in your Ubuntu install.... I am stating in advance that distro-hopping will be your next workaround, at least if you blindly install major upgrades. I've had to use that workaround 3 times in about 5 years of Linux use, though they were all in fair...

Re: "Workaround" discussion

This is a hilarious thread. I'm exhausted. Using Linux is a good workaround :D . MarkGyver Get Out Of My Head... I actually, kinda , pretty much did use Linux as a workaround to a Windows problem I was having... I had made a silly change to my NVIDIA driver to support dual screens (or some ot...

Re: 90's or 90s?

When I went to school, the standard way to form the plural of numbers, letters and initialisms was to use apostrophe s. School might have been where I learned that. (Probably where I learned most things...doi!) Yeah, like when people write "5 FLOPS" but "one FLOP". Confusing as ...

Re: A very interesting Mathematical Paradox

Thank you, ConMan, for being gentle with your convictions and arguments. I appreciate the treatment. And that comic is hilarious. It's a humorous way to express my frustration with that aspect of the Math and reality issue. lol. ...universal truths rather than just statements which contain a degree ...

Re: Re:

First, why on earth did you necro this thread? I knew I'd get a response like this. See, below. :( Fourth, you've got your relativity hopelessly wrong but I'm not going to go into that. I'm guessing this has to do with why it's impossible to reach the speed of light. But yeah, I wasn't making a sci...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hehe! My first name-mention. :) Yeah, I actually read that explanation... but I didn't like it . lol. I think it should stand for something, even partly. Kinda like how "asdf" is meaningless yet indicates my first four fingers performing an arpeggio [and that I'm still using the QWERTY lay...

.9999.... doesn't exist. 0.333333.... is the result of long division. I don't know of any division that could ever result in 0.999999.... I think this is why it's hard to grasp the concept here. In a duodecimal system, 1/3 = 0.4, 2/3 = 0.8, 3/3 = 1 = 0.4+0.8 [8+4=12, which results in 1]. There is n...

Re: 90's or 90s?

My related question is on acronyms. Take "CPU" for examples. More than one is cpus? CPU's? With people not capitalizing words for fear of yelling, acronyms run the risk of appearing to have that "s" be part of the acronym...and sometimes they are.

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

xkcd is the pure-X11 downport of the KDE program for playing audio CDs. Thank you! Now if I only knew what that meant. :? LOL. I wasn't sure "cd" actually meant CD, so that's cool to know. So, I actually understand 70% of that, mainly not sure what downport is. But the acronym itself is d...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hello. My name is Mike. I am a long time forum-goer...er, on other forums of the past, but haven't made a single post in at least 3 years. I love the XKCD comic (but hate that I still don't know what the name represents) and have found this forum to contain enough enticing intellect and geekery to j...
