Re: Police misbehavior thread

If something is so obvious that no one should need it pointed out to them (eg., cops shouldn't kill a man innocently using his cell phone in his own back yard), why not skip to something less obvious but still relevant (eg., look at this additional indication of the poor training that likely contri...

Which he then clarified as being intended as an example of bad training in general. That clarification itself could still be made more explicit of course, but again, I'm operating on the assumption that most people aren't monsters. I'm not sure how to explain it better. Re: Police misbehavior thread

Alternatively, operating on the principle that the default assumption should be that a fellow human being is not a monster, the point is that poor, panicked use of a gun is indicative of poor training practices in general, and that better training might lead to less panic in such situations, and th...

Re: Police misbehavior thread

My point was more along the lines of, 'Look at how horribly these cops are trained.' Any basic firearms course would tell you to never shoot madly like that. This miscommunication is on me. I should have made myself clearer. Perhaps we should also train them not to shoot black people for having a c...

Spider-Man was middling? I thought it was the best Marvel movie of last year, and possibly of recent years as well. Fresh, interesting, different, doesn't need to save the entire world from destruction, had a fantastic, actually menacing and memorable villain.

This article describes different plane boarding methods: https://www.vox.com/2014/4/25/5647696/the-way-we-board-airplanes-makes-absolutely-no-sense Counter-intuitively the boarding from back to front ("standard") is actually the slowest. I am very surprised, but also slightly doubtful of ...

I don't think PAstry is saying this is a bad thing to do (although if you're doing it without proper preparation and training for the risk you're taking, it's pretty bad). Just that looking at people who take great risks without need shouldn't be seen as heroes.

Unfortunately that's a pretty common trope in comic books. There's no piece of technology that just works out of the box with no testing, either, but that's a recurring theme in pretty much everything. And fans of media love to compare and contrast things - there's a rating for how powerful mutants ...

The finding relatives piece is not ridiculous, and I imagine is a large selling point - it is not so difficult these days to identify directly related relatives from DNA. If this technology was widely available 30 years ago, I'm certain a lost of Holocaust survivors would have used it.

You're describing this as if the total punishment allowed for a crime is always capped and distributed between the people responsible for it. That is not the case. Alice and Bob can both get a life sentence (if the immoral act Y is bad enough).
