Sure, Axes dull and eventually break... but it takes a while. Axes aren't really all that sharp to begin with, the cutting power comes from the weight, not the sharpness. Carrying a Katana would be idiotic, as it's a cutting device. Cutting is bad, bludeoning is good. You'd get very tired much soon...
