Re: Regional Dialect and Idiolect Oddities (pronunciation)

Separately, I should point out that spelling is not a major part of education anyway. Most kids do learn some vocab lists in school, but it's always a very minor part of English classes. Most vocabulary (and therefore spelling) comes from reading. Standardized tests do not test spelling, and assign...

Re: Regional Dialect and Idiolect Oddities (pronunciation)

Admittedly schedule and future look prettier the way they are now but pronounciationwise they should be something like futshure and schedjule like where are these j/sh sounds in the middle even coming from? I think the ch and j sounds come from the u . My guess would be that these used to be pronou...

But there's an important distinction: GUIs used to have menus , which were text based. For some reason these got replaced with ribbons and toolbars with stupid little tiny pictures that don't look like anything particular even after you've learned what they do, and change from one version of the so...

@gmalivuk: did it actually count the non-points-scoring ones when calculating the ratio?
It does (but I could change that).

Currently it doesn't even use an if statement to check if it should add points; it just adds 0 points, so treating non-point-gaining posts the same was easier.

"werry" seems nonsensical to me - "worry" has a completely different vowel from "berry". Now, "wurry" would make sense. ...but for me, at least, worry has the same vowel as in lett er and various other words ending in -er , so I think of er as the usual way o...

http://simplerspelling.tripod.com/arc05-3Q.html Most people rhyme "berry" and "hurry"? I don't think so. I've never heard anyone pronounce those words to rhyme. This has been discussed before. (This particular claim by this particular person, I mean.) Although werry I'd say woul...

Re: Why is there red on both sides of digital rainbow images?

I think it's more about adding a bit of red and green rather than a bit of white. Adding white really shouldn't change the hue. ...no one's saying that adding white to violet would change the hue. In the model Flumble suggested, blue + red gives the same cone response as violet + white, which, like...

Re: Why is there red on both sides of digital rainbow images?

Regardless, most diagrams indicate not a partial response of the L-cone at violet colours, but a partial response of the M-cone at bluish colours. So my current understanding is that 'blue' means a response of both the S-cones and M-cones, whereas 'violet' means a response of the S-cones only. Now ...
