Re: RTS Balancing - Proven to be NP hard (or even solvable)?

Why can't one meaningfully define balance. This is a critical part of your argument that you still haven't given a succinct answer for. I've been explaining why... If you need a simple analogy, this is like accomplishing a balance between how far one person can throw a spear, and how far another pe...

Re: Mass Effect 3 (To Avoid Spoilers -Don't Read)

There's no standard and never has been. Some people finish the games they review, some don't. There's really no point to "trust" reviewers because it's all opinion, but their business model usually necessitates that they put a spin on things.

Anyone know if that priest of Mara/Vaermina is a fun follower or not? He seemed to be pretty useful during the quest, but I killed him for the skull. If you found him fun during the quest, then he is fun. The majority of what you know about his personality will be from doing the quest, as once he b...

Re: RTS Balancing - Proven to be NP hard (or even solvable)?

I bet you could use a genetic algorithm to find effective build orders though. That already exists, actually. @freakish I have to posit that you don't understand even a fraction of the amount of raw information and complexity involved in SC2, nor how the game works and under what circumstances do p...

Re: The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim : Bacon Workshop

I don't find class/gender/race distribution among followers important. Interesting personality and character is important. They have hints of personality through their dialogue and tone of voice. When Metriod Other M came out, people felt that Samus's character wasn't properly represented in the same way that it was in every previous game, despite Samus barely doing anything to express who she was in those games. They u...

Re: RTS Balancing - Proven to be NP hard (or even solvable)?

Not relevant for creating a balanced game. 100% necessary for creating a fun game, but that isn't what was asked for. This is a problem of the disagreement on the definition of balance, which is why it would be important to define. I never said "Just limit APM, that's all you need to do."...

I don't understand why everyone fawns over Lydia. It has to be that she's the first follower you come across when you're playing the game vanilla vanilla. Re: RTS Balancing - Proven to be NP hard (or even solvable)?

Human limitations are difficult to replicate computationally. Something as simple as a sleep command to replicate human APM limitations is folly for several reasons. First because skill isn't determined by APM, but by how advanced the heuristic is for determining what the most effective course of ac...

Re: Starcraft 2 : The Dune II Clone

BW was global, but it was about as big as any other game at the time (pretty small). Serious esports started in Korea with BW, and it's been gradually growing internationally. I think GOM had a contract with Blizzard for exclusive rights to SC2 in Korea, but I'm not positive. Combine that with Korea...

I can never keep up with all those acronyms for all the different tournaments and leagues. But they are switching back from SC2 to a mix of SC2 / BW? Why is that? Is BW still that popular? That argument ignores the state of the internet and professional gaming (or gaming in general) back in 1998. SC2 has had a massive head start due to the frameworks surrounding it that didn't hardly exist 14 years ago.
