Re: Everything is racism

I'd just like to comment that (half of) the interesting thing I was trying to say in my original post was essentially that these kinds of cultural "tribalisms" could be rooted (in the evolution of our psychology) in literal tribe -alism; that in the ancestral environment, before writing an...

Re: Trump presidency

This whole discussion is way off-topic now, but complex numbers are basically just two-dimensional numbers, so a complex valuation of something would be a valuation of it in terms of two incommensurable aspects of value, which may be a thing.

I wonder why some people might value it more than others... wouldn't that imply that misery isn't something that is "objectively measurable in cold hard cash"? Not that this has much to do with the rest of the discussion here, but there can be objective measurements of things that differ ...

I was worried early on that it was going to be a mess of poorly-thought-out timey-wimey nonsense, but by the end it became apparent that they had a specific endgame in mind the whole time and everything mostly ties together neatly, modulo my spoilered fridge logic thoughts above. So that's a good th...

12 Monkeys (TV series)

This is about the TV series that just ended on Friday, not the movie it's based on (though I love that movie too). I've been struggling with some fridge logic in the wake of the series finale and need to discuss it somewhere, so spoilers for the whole series follow: I'm not really following how ...

It's important to remember that money is just an abstract representation of value, and what you want out of an investment is an increase in value, not necessarily an increase in value-represented-as-money. If your investment has "better returns" because you get more money out of it, but wo...

I mentioned tribalism at the end there, and I don't mean to say that all of these things are literally racism in and of themselves, but rather that all forms of cultural tribalism, as well as the various sex-related forms of bigotry, seem to plausibly have racial psychological origins. As to the con...
