XKCD Book - ever?

I've been a big fan of your strips ever since I heard about it through Boing Boing. I was just wondering if there will ever be a physical (as in hold-me-in-your-hand) sorta book that will be available with (among other things) XKCD comic strips in the near future over at your online store. I would gladly buy something like that and thought surely over Christmas it would happen... guess not.

This would be much easier were all the strips of a convenient size. Unfortunately... that's simply not the case.

It could be done though, I'd hit it.

We've considered it frequently. Its a major project and while things are underway for it, most normal directions to take this are not preferable ones.

I did notice recently that the comic had passed the 365/366 mark and was therefore large enough to make one of those comic-per-day desktop calendars...

the idea of a calender would be amazing, I'd buy one for all of my buddies.
And the problom with there being not enough pages is over for now, but a new one has arived if the book pulls through, what about next year? A possible solution would be one comic a week. What is the projected cost for a book like this?

The size of the book isn't a problem, I've seen Calvin and Hobbes books that are a little bigger an A4 piece of paper.

I'd also hit it.

The A4 paper size comment was referring to this.

Even then, it would be awkward. I know James Turner had a lot of problems with getting Beaver & Steve into print due to different sied strips. He went the route of A4, but it was still a lot of work not leaving a lot of white space.

Dunno if this is the right forum or not, since I'm new here. But there didn't seem to be a 'store' forum, and the 'Questions:' thingy on the right hand side of the store FAQ doesn't seem to actually DO anything.

Obviously the point is that I'd like to see a collection of xkcd comics in book form. I think Munroe's missing a bet here - we all know people who won't bother to click through to xkcd if given the link, but if you give them a book of the comics for Christmas or their birthday, they'd read it from cover to cover. I'd buy 10-15 copies to give to people next Christmas, and I'm not exaggerating in the least. Only one person I know IRL is an xkcd fan, but most of my friends would like it if they saw it - they just don't spend much time online.

...eh?

I linked a comic to one of my friends and he spent the night reading all the ones on the site. I also read everyone on the site when I discovered it(fuck English homework). But it would be nice to have all the comics in book form, or if that would be too large, all of randall's favorites?

I did that too, same with questionable content and CAD.

I spent hours at my last job reading through all of white ninja and something positive lol.

Well, this is creative commons, so as long as you don't sell it, you're free to print them off and staple them. (I think)

Will there ever be an XKCD book? I've looked in the store, and the FAQ's, but it doesn't say. Has he ever announced that he will make one?

I would love that! I already print off my favorites and put them in page protectors in a folder so I can show my friends and random people that I think would be interested, though. But a nice bound copy would make my day.

You know what would be neat. If it was like the calvin and hobbes 50th anniversary or whatever. Where nearly every comic had Bill Watson's thoughts about he comic. From one sentence saying "I like this one" to a page long discussion on smoking.

If posting in this thread makes it more likely that a book will be made (as the popularity of this thread would probably correspond to the popularity (and sales) of a book), then I will post. Especially if it gives me a chance to buy such a book.

I guess we'll just have to wait for the 50th anniversary then.

I'm not to sure who Bill Watson is, I looked on Google and none of the results seemed to suggest that they were the guy who you were talking about. But assuming the guy you're talking about is a smart fellow, I guess this would rock fairly hardcore.

There is a lolcat compendium (Christmas present for a random, check) - I don't see why an xkcd book wouldn't sell.

I would definitely buy commentary, as I loved the 10th anniversary Calvin and Hobbes compendium. Randall should really do a 4T'st anniversary edition or something.

(50 nerd points to whoever can identify that reference!)

It's Bill Watterson, the author of Calvin and Hobbes. The anniversary book had comics with his commentary underneath them. It definitely would be awesome to see something like this for XKCD.

Bill Watterson, my friend. Watterson. The genius behind Calvin and Hobbes.

EDIT: Ninja'd

Yes, I would definitely buy a book. It'd be so awesome you don't even know. And no, I'm not waiting for the 50th anniversary. Do it now!

Why, it's referencing the 4Tst Annual Fall Float Parade. Everyone knows that.

Yeah, I'd probably buy one.

I'd definitley buy one-and it'd increase the popularity of the comic aswell, from random people seeing it and laughing-it'd be awesome!

I don't doubt there's a book somewhere in the future. However, we're only on comic 518, and a good many comics are around 1/3rd of a page printed at sane size. These things aren't worth doing until 2-300 pages. By my figuring, we're around halfway to a glorious book of stickfigure win.

I was thinking about this! I really, really wish there was a book...much though I like getting the comics online, there's something about turning over pages and giggling...

Depends what you mean by sane size, i guess. This gentleman has released several books of his comics. Harcbacked, and about the size of a DVD case.

I don't know about that. The Perry Bible Fellowship book is less than 100 pages, with two strips per page, and it doesn't seem too short.

If I'm buying an xkcd book I totally want coffee-table book sized win. Or at the very least textboox-sized.

I like to go back a couple pages so I can reply to threads with fewer posts. I feel dumb posting in threads with tons of posts because I don't like to read that many posts and the conversation has usually shifted a bit from the OP.

The problem with a book of xkcd is that vis-a-vis Calvin & Hobbes its layout is far less regular. Calvin & Hobbes always had to fit onto the newpaper's specific page shape, whereas with the freedom of a webcomic Randall can have comics as big or as small as he wants. It would be logistically difficult to get every comic into a book, but some of the smaller ones "My Hobby:" for example would work quite well.

You could always have fold out pages for comics like 'Height'; you would have to, unless you wanted to split it across several pages.
