Avatars all messed up

Postby Sungura » Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:43 pm UTC

Um...so most of them don't even load (just says "user avatar") and the ones that do are all wrong. Example, Zohar currently has the refrigerator, which is tall and skinny avatar. But the image that shows is of Zohar Bunny (which although is a 123 x 150 image, is smushed into the skinny fridge shape). Mine which was my face, is now back to my bunny (again, same smushyness going on). Same with anyone else's avatar who has changed in since about August. Some people are back to bunnies, those that aren't are still the faces from when we were doing that. It's quite weird.

This happens for me, but only on echochamber and fora.xkcd.com.On forums.xkcd.com (haven't tried the others) it's the current avatars. *Confuzzled*

Oh yes I should specify (I forget anyone uses anything else!) - I'm on forums.xkcd.com
I did try clearing cache and cookies and that didn't work.

Are you people using prosilver or subsilver or prosilver_left or what? This may be a factor.

It's still happening for me. Quite a few people have messed up/old/no avatars.

I'm using prosilver. I've tried forums.xkcd.com, echochamber, and fora.xkcd.com and the avatars are messed up on all of them. But which ones are messed up has changed since just a couple minutes ago for some reason. Also, some avatars are different on the different domains.

(edited for wordfilter confusion)

Yeah, uh, in looking, mine is okay now, but everyone else's is still messed up.
And now some of the smilies are not parsing for me either.

It looks like something absurd happened to the filepath where the avatars are saved or sommat.

Not much I can do about it for now, we'll see when davean is about.

I can't see most people's avatars either. First an old version of mine showed up, then I tried to re-upload the new one, but there is no longer an option to do so in the control panel.

Good, I thought this was just me. I seem to be losing more and more as time goes on. Just in this thread: GhostWolfe, Belial, and Bakemaster. Also, I just noticed while typing this: you can see the nonexistent smilies in the Reply box.

EDIT: A filter, huh? Where does that one's backstory lie?

Hey, it's Fluff! :D

nbonaparte: The filter was discussed in FaiD - people were complaining about links to echochamber logging them out, and since echochamber is not really the one people are supposed to be using, we set wordfilter to change echochamber. me to forums.xkcd. It doesn't seem to work for embedded URLs though. Best solution is if everyone quits using echochamber.

Just stopping by to report that I'm having this issue as well. My avatar is gone for me, as for ~30% of the rest of the fora.

Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, Firefox 3.5.5, forums.xkcd.com, prosilver (woah! There are other layouts? *is clueless* I'll try switching to those, then report back.)

EDIT: Now in prosilver_left. Same problem.

EDIT2: Subsilver. Same problem.

------------
EDIT3:

I've found the problem, and I think I have a solution. Belial, do you have FTP access to the fora's server, or is that reserved for davean and xkcd? Becuase the problem could be fixed very quickly.

One word: permissions. They're screwy.

Here is my evidence. Presenting Exhibit A:
images/

I don't know if that directory was restricted before, but it's kind of weird that it wouldn't be at hidden or something. Moving on.

Exhibit B:
images/avatars/

Again, out in the open. Now, Exhibit C. Mind you, this is gonna load a lot fo stuff, so if you're on a bad connection, don't click.

Exhibit C:
images/avatars/upload/

One more time, out in the open. As you watch the directory load, note the format of each link type: they all follow the pattern 0665322611b80c6f6fbab8d5036e2f9e_[user#].[filetype]. Since they list (at least for me) in alphanumerical order, I did a little test.

Exhibit D:
images/avatars/upload/0665322611b80c6f6fbab8d5036e2f9e_925.jpg

That's the avatar of user 925, hermaj. Btu what happens if we try to view the avatar of someone with a currently missing avatar?

Exhibits E, F:
My avatar: images/avatars/upload/0665322611b80c6f6fbab8d5036e2f9e_40152.jpg
Belial's avatar: images/avatars/upload/0665322611b80c6f6fbab8d5036e2f9e_16.jpg

If you don't feel like clicking through, here's what you see:
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /images/avatars/upload/0665322611b80c6f6fbab8d5036e2f9e_16.jpg on this server.

So that's the problem. Somehow the permissions went screwy. I checked and the same thing happened to the smileys which aren't loading. You could probably fix the problem in a few minutes with FTP access to the server, and FileZilla.

Procedure:
1. Open FileZilla
2. Connect to server with FTP details
3. Right-click /images subdirectory
4. Click "File permissions..."
5. In the "Numerical value:" box, type 0755
6. Check "Recurse into subdirectories"
7. Select "Apply to all files and directories"
8. Click OK
9. Repeat steps 3 and 4
10. In the "Numerical value:" box, type 0700
11. Check "Recurse into subdirectories"
12. Select "Apply to directories only"
13. Click OK
14. Hope for the best

Unless you are providing constructive information as scikidus did, please do not respond. We know people's avatars are messed up, as well as the add avatar option. Saying "Me Too" does nothing at this point and this forum is not for general discussion.

Silvyr's avatar changed back to her old one by itself. http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?p=1870373#p1870373 She would never lie about something like that, and I find it hard to believe she did it and just forgot. Did anyone else's avatar change back to an old one?

Sungura, I'm seeing your face avatar again, but I'm damn sure it was a bunny this morning. Mine is still missing (as it was this morning). Also, whether or not I can see smilies seems inconsistent too.

Just double-checking, echochamber's identical in every way to forums.xkcd, right? As in, they're both DNS pointers to the same subdomain to the main xkcd.com webpage? Then again, maybe they're not, because on the images/avatars/upload page a vast majority of the avatars were modified on Mar 31 2009, which was when echochamber was set up, and I don't see why pointing a new domain to the same files should disturb the avatar files unless something was copied.

I'm also trying to figure out if the domains may have anything to do with the other symptom which people are noticing, where people's avatars are reverting to older versions. When you check images/avatars/upload again, it seems that a few people have more than one avatar uploaded per account. Some example of this are user # 66 (Jack Saladin, avatar currently missing, two avatar files here: a and b), #853 (telkanuru, avatar currently present, two avatar files here: a and b) and #8640 (MFHodge, avatar currently present, two avatar files here: a and b).

Then again, one person with a confirmed avatar revert, Silvyr (user # 36143) only has one avatar file in that list, so I have no idea. Where could the server have possibly saved that old avatar, and why invoke it now? That's awfully weird.

It's probably just cookies, but I know that switching domains logged you out, so it's possible that there's a minor server side difference.

Which makes the question, how minor is that server-side difference? Now that I think about it, davean might have moved to a different server on April 1...which would explain the huge number of MArch 31 Last modified images.

They're all holdovers from one thing or another.

fora.xkcd.com was created as a result of a old joke about Latin plurals. Using "fora" in place of "forums" has been a running joke here ever since. And it's also more correct, because Latin is superior.

forums3.xkcd.com was created when the server moved that one time (search suggests it was about the end of Sep 2007, but it didn't have a dedicated thread, so no link), so that people could still access the forum while waiting for forums.xkcd.com's DNS entry to propagate (creating new DNS entries propagates much faster than altering an existing one). The name is because this was at the same time as we moved to phpBB3.

echochamber.me was an April Fool's joke that lasted way too long.

www.forums.xkcd.com and www.echochamber.me are presumably automatic things that were never touched. I'm not sure why they exist, but www.fora.xkcd.com and www.forums3.xkcd.com do not.
