All Things Unixkcd

Postby cprocjr » Thu Apr 01, 2010 5:37 am UTC

Good News Everyone! There's now a single topic for all things unixkcd!

Why, you ask? Because no one on the forums has any control over any of it, and the people who *do* have control don't often (ever) check in on S/FI. So now everything is nicely condensed into one easily [noticed / ignored] new format.

Enjoy!

The new XKCD site, or "unixkcd" doesn't work with safari.
It just shows "guest@xkcd:/$ " but nothing loads.

Like this:

I wasn't sure what it was at first, but then I tried using Firefox, and it worked properly.

(I'm assuming this is some sort of April fools joke. It would just be nice if it worked on Safari)

I just figured that out! It's not quite April where I live, but I realized right after I posted.
It's especially cruel for Safari users, because it doesn't work!

That's weird, it just started working! I had already tried refreshing/restarting browser, but it still didn't work. Then all of a sudden right now it started working. Well that was weird.

I have to say, this is a pretty cool April Fools prank!

The new page requires JavaScript. The GUI alternative (presumably the "classic" version) appears to be unimplemented (returning 404 not found).

If you are avoiding Client-side scripting, you may want to use the Gopher Mirror.

Does clearing your cache help? It didn't work at first for me either, in Firefox, but after clearing my cache it worked fine.

Bugs on the comic page

Postby Carnildo » Thu Apr 01, 2010 10:18 am UTC

Where should I report bugs on the comic page? When using Opera 9.64 for Linux, the CLI won't let me input any punctuation besides the underscore, which rather limits what commands I can use.

Ok, I found out the "GUI" still works: the link on the main page should point to the latest individual comic page instead of "foo."

Forums not in Usenet format

Postby MadamCurie » Fri Apr 02, 2010 2:18 am UTC

Wow, after the wonderful main page display today I was expecting the forums to be in Usenet format.
Sadly they were still phpbbs format.

Please correct this over site in the future.

How... what? I'm not entirely familiar with Usenet, but I do know that it predates the World Wide Web; there isn't a standard format for displaying Usenet as hypertext. Were you expecting to see the forums displayed within the terminal?

unixkcd is broken if "www." in url

Postby ThisIsJeff » Fri Apr 02, 2010 8:25 am UTC

http://xkcd.com/unixkcd/ works beautifully, but http://www.xkcd.com/unixkcd/ is tragically broken -- blinking cursor but no comic and no ability to type.

OS tested: Mac OS X 10.5.8
Browsers tested: Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta, Firefox 3.6.2, Safari 4.0.4

It is especially tragic because http://unixkcd.com/ redirects to http://www.xkcd.com/unixkcd/, so it too is broken.

Now (2010.04.02 13:08 GMT) the above links redirect to http://uni.xkcd.com and it is still broken.

Same issue, the error console gives a decent hint:
Error: xkcd.latest is null

404 in Unixkcd

Postby an0mali » Fri Apr 02, 2010 7:45 pm UTC

While using Unixkcd, 'random' tried to send me to comic 404, which doesn't exist (shocking!). I then tested 'next' from 403 and the 'next' command got stuck trying to find 404 and wouldn't move past to 405 like the regular site does. 'prev' behaves the same from 405.

I know its kinda an inconsequential thing, but I figured you guys could put something fun in there when the user tries to access 404 and allow 'next' and 'prev' to carry on normal operation. =D

Visiting the unixkcd page from an iPod Touch doesn't enable the keyboard, so you can't use the psuedo-terminal.

EDIT: then again I know the fora gods don't have dominion over that page, and davean has already stated that he doesn't have access to an iPhone for testing, so let's just pretend this post is to let other people know that they aren't the only ones seeing this.

2 things:
1. davean: you could have 5 hour visit to the apple store.
2. does anyone know if they could rewrite the interface using AJAX, with a text input box?

Actually that would be useful in general for all websites that can accept key strokes for JS without a text field. Perhaps some bookmarklet that brings up an alert prompt where you type and then simulates those keystrokes one at a time?

uni.xkcd.com is stuck?

Postby Aitamen » Sat Jul 31, 2010 6:07 pm UTC

Ever since unixkcd went up, I've been using it (it's great to show friends, and get people laughing), and it stopped updating at 771 for me. I've cleared my cache and whatnot. Not sure if it's on my end or if I'm missing something or it just stopped updating. I didn't see a news post about it, so I figured I'd ask here.

[of course, feel free to del if I'm an idiot and missed something obvious.]

Searching: It's not hard, please do it. Topics merged. -Az

It's stuck for me as well; I don't think it's a cache issue.

Given that it was started as an April fools joke, and its now August, I think you should just use the pages that work.

I was wondering about this myself. Seems that it was working all the way up to 771, so the fact that it is now August doesn't seem like it is an intentional thing.

If XKCD is going to discontinue the uni.xkcd.com interface, that's okay. On the otherhand, if this is an error or an oversight and they intended on keeping this working, then hopefully someone will see this thread and it will be fixed soon.

As it's not a main page, I figure posting here might get it looked at by someone who can either say "Yeah, we just stopped caring, sorry", or "oh... missed that, fixing it now, thanks"

'least that's what I was going for ^_^

UniXKCD has finally stopped updating

Postby shikiroin » Tue Aug 24, 2010 9:31 pm UTC

Which sucks cause it is awesome
I know it started as a sort of April Fools joke, but I have been using Uni.XKCD.com since it started, and as of a couple weeks ago, it is no longer updating or showing new comics...
has anybody else used uni.xkcd since it came out or am I the only one?
I love the interface of it

Please do a search before making a new topic. This has already been discussed. -Lanicita

I want to join all the people who are presumably complaining about the uni interface not updating anymore. I don't know for sure since I didn't bother to read all the replies, but anyway, please fix it... I still have it set in my bookmarks and it's bothring me to delete the "uni." everytime I want to read a new comic =(

Couldn't you... remove it from your bookmarks?

You realise that making both these posts has required many times more effort than removing four characters from your bookmark. The easiest factor to change by far is the one which involves yourself the most.

But the problem isn't the bookmark there. I use it to check if it's been fixed already. The problem is that I want to read new comicx in the uni format and can't.

Besides, arguing on the internet, by definition, requires less effort than anything else.
