Oooooo Oh me yarm I won!!! Didn't expect that!!

Hmm.
To theme or not to theme...

Got a theme!

TIME FOR ROUND 7!
aka. the Obscure Song Round.
This round, you have to submit a song with less than 50,000 views on Youtube. (Songs that aren't on Youtube at all are allowed too, as long as they have under 50,000 views on whatever site they are on.)

(details: that's less than 50,000 views for the most popular youtube video for that song. In other words, submitting a video with 10,000 views isn't allowed if there's another video of the exact same song by the exact same artist also on youtube but with 2 million views...)

Submit your entries via PM. Deadline is 18:00 UTC, on 8 July.

I'm not sure I'd call this their best song
Spoiler:
but top this one for obscurity.

I realised this might give away my song, so read after voting or something. Of course it might turn out you lot know even more obscure songs, in which case save me the humiliation and don't read it at all.

My submission is in the ballpark of 50,000 plays. (I hope saying that doesn't make me identifiable.)

I guess only fewer than a thousand plays would be really obscure, but then again, if you really liked a song you'd account for a thousand plays by yourself. (I wonder how I got to this round's artist in the first place though, since it's a bit weird for the youtube algorithm to suggest something obscure.)

I'm kinda shocked that I placed as well as I did  Of course I have to thank the mad bastards at WFMU for the 365 Days Project...the challenge wasn't so much finding something obscure as it was choosing one that's also relatively listenable :D flicky totally shoulda placed higher though.

Anyway, I'm good either way - don't mind running it again, also don't mind handing it off to patzer for a second go.

You've also picked the most obscure song at least according to the particular metric you've chosen.

Yep!
I almost chose a different, less obscure, one, but then realised that some versions of it had more than 50k views so switched to the one I chose, to be on the safe side.

In that case, might as well host another round as I have an idea for a round.

Round 8: The Cover Song Round

This time, your entry has to be a cover of a song, rather than a recording by the original artist.

Submit your entries via PM. Deadline is 18:00 UTC, on 22 July.

Congratulations on winning your own round, patzer! (btw 2+5+3+2+4 is also 16, otherwise the point totals don't add up to a multple of 6)

commodorejohn wrote:I'm kinda shocked that I placed as well as I did

Me too. Everyone but patzer is beaten by a bloody christmas song!

Also a theme suggestion for a future round: no guitars. Only SuperJedi224's entry wasn't heavy on guitars and vocals.

How lenient is the jury regarding covers/tributes/remixes?

Intriguing. Of course, the funny part is that a whole lot of iconic recordings are actually covers ;)

I won't be too strict about it. If it's clearly based on the original song, but performed by a different artist, that's good enough.

I've sent my entry in.

By the way, I was thinking - for a future round, is there anyone here who'd be interested in a theme of "songs you've made yourself"? Obviously the mechanics of it might need to be a bit different, because anywhere you've posted it on the internet might give away who you are, so we might have to figure out a system where everyone sends the music in and the person running the round uploads them all together somewhere with no identifying information other than titles. But I was just curious who would enter if there was such a round.

Depends on your definition of "you made yourself" and we're probably going to need a longer deadline on that one, but I'm interested.

I had a similar idea on the lines of "mad solo on something other than a guitar" and I think we could do an instrumental round sometime, perhaps more than once with different restrictions.

That'd be fun for me anyway :) Though I'm curious how many participants we'd get...?

A thought: we should post a link to the song contest in the music subforum (viewforum.php?f=23). Might be some people in there interested in it.

oooo, interesting one
I've never made my own songs but I have recorded some by others. Which I could post. So I'd be in for that round!

Though if it's too challenging for most people, an easier one would be "songs made by someone you know personally", maybe.

Oh yeah, obviously covers would be allowed. Ambiguous use of "made", there - sorry.
