Huh, I thought I'd have to sift through songs to find one, but I might be able to do it off the top of my head. It is an obscure event though...

Yep. Sorry about that.

I never received a corrected entry from Flumble, so we have a total of 6 entries.

Here are our entries:

Piotr Tchaikovsky - Finale from the 1812 Overture (French invasion of Russia, 1812)
Sabaton - The Last Stand (Sacking of Rome, May 6, 1527)
The Zombies - Butcher's Tale (The western front of WWI)
Sabaton - Panzerkampf (The Battle of Kursk, July-August 1943)
Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (The sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, November 10, 1975)
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Four Dead in Ohio (The Kent State massacre, May 4, 1970)

The voting deadline is August 15 at 5 PM EST

Out of curiosity I tried recording a song and realised that I'm still terribly uncomfortable hearing my own voice on recording. I guess I'l just stick to an instrumental song then

Yeah, it is weird hearing your own voice from outside your head.

'Course, I just do instrumental stuff anyway since A. I don't own a non-garbage microphone and B. I can't sing and play at the same time...

Weird that we have those two Sabatons in the list.

I'm surprised the Zombies didn't place higher. Odessey and Oracle is freakin' great.

Anyway, we've talked about this a few times already, so what the hell, let's go for it:

BIWEEKLY SONG CONTEST: ROUND # THE MUSIC YOU MADE ROUND

This time the theme is going to be music made by you, the participants. We'll go with a fairly loose interpretation of that criteria - it can be a cover, if you recorded it, it can be performed by a group, as long as you were part of it, it can be totally pre-programmed and synthetic, just so long as you were on the business end of the machine that rendered it. As long as you made some noise and it's available on the interwebs for forum members to hear, it's all good. Deadline for entries is 5:00 P.M. PST on Friday 8/30. Break a leg!

(P.S. don't actually break a leg, that would be bad.)

(P.P.S. forum member Flumble has helpfully provided an anonymous upload point at https://xkcd.flumble.nl/song-contest/upload.php for your convenience.)

Are we going to do anything like what I suggested, where we submit them all to you and you upload them somewhere for anonymity? Or should we just provide a link as usual?

I think it's probably not worth the trouble trying to be a stickler over anonymity with this one. Of course, if you want to upload something under a different pseudonym than usual, feel free, but overall I suspect it'd just needlessly complicate things. But I'm open to suggestions and don't have any particular objection if that's the way people want to do it.

I can make a small upload form later today. Might be useful for future rounds too, so we don't have to listen to everything on youtube.

Quick! Find an old recording, upload it to X (file.town is an option) and send the download link to commodorejohn!

You can now freely upload songs to https://xkcd.flumble.nl/song-contest/upload.php.
It's anonymous as long as I don't immediately check out the uploads after a message saying "I submitted my song!", which I pinky promise not to do. (And for what it's worth logging any identifiable info, like your IP address, is illegal for me unless I get explicit consent (yay for GDPR!). Also you can ask me at any time to delete a song, especially after the round is over.)
For extra++ anonymity, we can agree that commodorejohn will not publish the submitter names in the results, but just the song URLs.

Yep, got Flicky's entry :)

Also, heard back from somitomi, who would still like to participate but would need an extension. In light of the fact that turnout for this round is probably going to be a bit lighter, are there any objections to moving the deadline out a week to the 30th so we can get an extra entry in?

Spiffy :) But, and as a general service announcement, even if you're using Flumble's uploader, please PM me the link/title so I know who had what when I put together the final results.
