For people (like me) who had no idea what 'Free as in Destitute' even was, here's a helpful thread:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=21677&start=40

"Free as in Destitute" is basically just a forum where you're allowed (ie: free) to break all the normal forum rules. Here I was thinking I was missing out on being part of some secret club or something!

I think all of the forums rules are good*, so I don't think I'm missing out on anything by not being a card-carrying member.

*(Except for Rule 10. Coloured text makes everything better.)

Who wants to be the mod for Challenge Your Assumptions 3? If there are no other takers, I do have a vague idea, but I might need a bit of time to fully develop it.

I'd really like to mod one eventually, but the puzzle ideas I've been kicking around has yet to cohere into a complete game...

I'm thinking of making a HEXATTACK spinoff, which I am temporarily calling Haitchred until a better name pops up.

Notable features include moving platforms, deterministic drones, and the ability to change the environment.

If enough people (read, >3) people want to play this game, then I'll make the thread.

Also if I get permission from Lawsome. (If he hasn't responded by then, I'll assume what he said somewhere in the original HA thread still holds and that he allows me to make the game. I'll include many links to the original game.)

Not really. Diplomacy needs a mod.

I am willing to mod diplomacy for you guys though. Standard map, moves once per week, deadline is Tuesdayy, orders to be PMed to me.

Dip is a great game, I play it on www.redscape.com, which is a bit dead these days but used to be an awesome place to play.

You need to have a lot of comitment for a dip game though, getnerally the games that I will play will last > 3 months.

I would also be happy to commit to playing diplomacy with turns once each week. Can I be Austria?

---------
Also, has anyome here played the computer game M.U.L.E. before? It's a competitive/cooperative planet colonisation game, where you work together to build a good colony, and work against each other to be the most successful colonist too. It has a number of real-time and random elements, but it would also work well turn based and deterministic, as long as the rules were sorted out well. I'd be interested in tryiing to make some forum games rules for it if people were interested in playing.

Dip Game:
1. Blue
2. Lawrencelot
3. Dudio (Austria)
4.
5.
6.
7.

I'd say you need at least 5 for a game (poerferably 7 because then you can use the original map, but there are varients for 5,4,6,7, 8, 9 etc.)

I'd like to play diplomacy but I'd request that there not be too many pictures and for the rules to be contained in the thread.

MULE sounds good. The wikipedia article makes it sound like kingdom control. :)

Out of curiosity, what is too many pictures? The faid game had one picture of the updated map at the end of each round.

Examples of too much picturage IMO: Hexattack, Snakes and Ladder Monopoly, Stratego.

One picture a week is fine. What I don't like is when every action is described only with a picture and I have to compare pictures to see what changed.

But I think I'm just weird, so don't change stuff for my sake.

For those people who want to play diplomacy (and are using either Mac or Windows) I recomment downloading RealPolitik

http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/

Which is quite old, but still good. This is what I will be using to adjudicate.

Adam, there will be 3 pictures a week. FIrstly a moves picture, then a picture of the current board position and, if it is required, a adjustments picture

I'm Italy (green) in those

Which of these games would people like me to mod:

1) RPG (A single Tel Balok episode with "An Adventurer is You" rules)
2) Calling Cards 2.0
3) XKCD Coup 2.0
4) Intergalactic Sports Gambling
5) Stock Market Simulation
6) Kingdom Control Mafia

Also, if anyone can direct me to M.U.L.E. rules I'll look into running that.

1!!!!

Actually, I was going to send you a PM about it, because, I think the concept is robust, even a few days before cancelling it I had 4 active players, and they kept joining, but never stayed, because I think I couldn't deliver, but I think a better mod could have pulled it off.

I'd really like if it was a CrossOver Spinoff from An Adventurer is You just like it was from Snark's Great Big World, so players, if they wish so, can continue their adventures of those games, :) - I still have this package that Jack Street gave me that I have to deliver to Vienna, and would love to see what happened next! I wonder if other players from those games would also like to continue their adventures.

...

Oh, I got over myself, I just read its meant as continuation of Tel Balok XD - Would I get to finally spy on them dwarves? :D

Hm... So for my sort of political/kingdom game... let me muse openly:

-Most likely it will take place starting on a fictional continent
-People will start off with small nations, city states really (capital plus small surrounding villages and countrysides) which they will be able to expand in due time.
-There will be some NPCs, created and controlled via mod disgression

I'm considering dual options... possibly allowing both if people show substantial interest in the second:
-Obviously the first instance would be you creating and controlling a city state outright, as an entity.

-The second idea, if people might be interested in, is that you start out as a single character, and I place you in a decently sized NPC nation. Your job, henceforth, would be not to gain power as an entity, but individually... e.g. your game would instead be played working up the ranks of power until you finally control the kingdom you're in... possibly picking up some followers, an organization, etc. along the way. Once you're in control of the kingdom (perhaps still playing as a sole ruler/group/heir/etc.) you then expand par with everyone else.

If I created this game including option 2, would anyone be interested in playing it over playing option 1?

XKCD Coup was awesome, and calling cards was also pretty cool, so I would be interested in watching and/or playing those. A stock market simulation might be cool if the rules were snazzy enough.

Also, if anyone can direct me to M.U.L.E. rules I'll look into running that.

I've thought about it a bit, and decided that I think the rules are too real-time for a forum game. It would need a lot of thought to adapt it in a way that was forum-game friendly and true to the original rules as much as possible.

You could come up with a 'lite' version of it that would be more suitable for forums, though, without too much hassle if you were interested.

Vytron posted some 'facts' that related to the 'OTT' (The 'Time' Thread in "Individual XKCD Comic Threads"). You posted 'facts' saying those weren't facts. Vytron thinks they are. :P

It makes reality a lot more wowtertastic, yes.

So yeah, that thread:

"Some guy in comics I drew as a kid had a big nose and said lies to make it grow as a super power to defeat people" ~ Factette

"Superman is weak against cryptonite" ~ Factette

"I have three eyes and blue skin and 8 tentacles" ~ Not a factette, unless you do have an avatar with that appearance, or a character representing you with that appearance in a work of fiction, or, you DO happen to be like that in real life. With so many unknowns it's hard for people to pinpoint it as non-factette with certainty.

"Vytron hasn't posted in this thread" ~ (for a thread where I did post in) - Clearly not a factette.

Vytron wrote:"Vytron hasn't posted in this thread" ~ (for a thread where I did post in) - Clearly not a factette.

But what about in Adam H's fantasy universe where everything is the same except you haven't posted in that thread? In that version of 'reality', it is a factette.

That's why I think it's important to qualify statements with "In X, ..."
Although I guess that would mean that we should really qualify all our statements with "According to my perception of reality, ..."

So perhaps the relevant factor for deciding whether or not you need to qualify a factette should be how noteworthy the particular universe it is true in is. So, for example, Superman's universe is noteworthy, so no qualification needed. To Adam H, the OTT is not particularly noteworthy, and so needed qualification. To Vytron, however, it is exceptionally noteworthy, and no qualification was needed.
Does that make it a factette, though? I think I've lost myself a little in this strange argument.
