Old board

As requested in the Forum Games Discussion thread: Snakes and Ladders Monopoly!

Spoiler:
Huh, the ladders are a lie!

This is a normal Monopoly game stacked on top of S&L. Please ask questions if you haven't played Monopoly before, otherwise, the differences are:

- Railroads are divided into Blue ones, and Red ones. When you land on one, you go to the square indicated by the number on the train, and land on a Free Parking Square. Blue ones get you closer to GO, Red ones return you to spaces closer to the start of the board. You can buy them as any other property, charging players when they land on them.

- You only need 3 adjacent properties in a zone to start building houses and hotels in them (and charge as Monopoly in the Deed) with the exception of the brown zone (on squares 3, 4, 29, 30), the blue zone (on squares 80, 81, 84 and 85) and the black zone (97 and 99) which only require two adjacent zones.

- Landing on Square 83 allows you to go directly to GO and collect $200.

- Luxury tax charges $300. Super Luxury Tax (square 98) charges $900.

- Landing on Square 100 gives $1000.

- Players can communicate with each other and make deals with @Player spoilers.

- Players roll numbers from 1 to 10. It's your turn again if you roll what you rolled in your last turn. The third time you roll the same number in a row, you go to jail.

- Bids are resolved by having players send 3 amounts of money, privately in Spoilers each higher than the last. They will be used until there is no tie in the bids, and then, whoever bid the most only has to pay $1 more than the second highest bid (pogo.com ruling). If tie remains after third number used, property remains unowned.

- Consider this a Beta, everything in the game is up for discussion :)

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family Anatidae on our hands. –Douglas Adams

Might I request that the snakes and ladders be made less loopy and more opaque, so it's easier to see where they go and where they come from?

I also request clearer snakes/ladders. Maybe straighter lines in addition to being more opaque?

Are we allowed to give properties in lieu of payment ( with both parties agreeing)?
When are we allowed to trade?

Also, I only count 8 of the blue and red railroads. Am I just not seeing the 9th ones?

Oh, the idea with putting the numbers on the trains was so that, when landing on Free Parking slot, you don't need to know from where they come from, and the snakes and snakes ladders become kind of decorative, but please tell me if this works:

Image
http://abload.de/img/monovxa3g.png

(Free Parking spots are now painted depending on their train color - We can now make it do that blue "Free Parking" slots give $50 to people landing directly on them, while red "free parking" charges $50 to people, or something)

As long as it's your turn you can propose such trades to people you have to pay money to, so, yes.

bluebambue wrote:When are we allowed to trade?

You are able to start trades with other players whenever it's your turn, and accept deals with them at any point.

Anyway, a more important issue here: dice rolling. The reason playing a board game like this was suggested was so that we could use dice rolls as per Adam's post here. Players put a string of 10 numbers in a spoiler other players can't read, from 0000000000 to 9999999999 - it can be any string, but you can't use a random number generator to pick it. 0 counts as 10 (the highest roll.) You can make deals with other players to tell them your string, but you can only tell your string to one person. Players are given then sum of the string of other players, you can't create a string that has the same sum of another.

Players can only pick a number from a string of another player once, until they have picked from all other players. Once all their numbers have been picked, a player can create a new string.

How does that sound?

If it sounds too invasive we could *shudders* have the first game with people just visiting random.org for their rolls, and then, a second game could be the Dice-guessing edition.

A few spectator observations (if you're interested):

- I like the 1d10 (vs the normal 2d6) implementation you've made, but 2d6 would also work fine.
- I really like the 'numbers tell you where the ladders/snakes go' idea. I don't think you even need the whirly lines.

Thanks dudio. I don't think it's Snakes and Ladders without the swirly lines, though, even if they're just decorative!

I don't understand the point of the strings. They would be our dice rolls for the next 10 turns? Why would we want to tell other players our strings? Is there some scoring that happens separate from the monopoly game? I think having non-random numbers would really harm the game as players could just choose to jump over places they don't want to go.

Edit: I have now read the initial suggestion. Quoted here for others:
Spoiler:
Vytron wrote:/In

Okay, just asking, how is rolling going to take place? Is it just going to random.org and getting a number? I'm really bored of that D:

I'd like to propose a new way of rolling that is both interesting and interactive, at least to me:

First players put all possible rolls in some order for other people to pick in spoilers other players can't read:

Vytron's Numbers

Code: Select all
613425
Then, to roll, players pick from the pools of other players, at least three different players without peeking.

Camo's rolls:

Code: Select all
First roll Vytron's: 3
Second roll Snark's: 2
Third roll Adam's: 6
So Camo's roll will be the number I put in third (a 3), the number Snark put in 2nd, and the number Adam put last.

So it's no longer just gambling but people trying to predict where the other people put their 6s

How does that sound?

I think this is overly complicated and slow.

It could certainly work. To save time, could we separate our string into 10 labeled spoilers, a number per spoiler? That way, if I pick odf #4, I can go open spoiler 4 in odf's most recent number post instead if waiting on someone to give me my number.

Great idea! This way is actually faster than a mod telling players what they rolled (which was happening in the Waterdeep game, though there players were drawing cards)

Probably reducing the string to n digits where n is the number of players.

Okay, welcome everyone! Thanks for playing, and have fun!

Here's how dice rolling will take place:

First, players get to pick a Monopoly token, it can be anything, here's some ideas, and well, you have plenty of options for token choosing, from Pikachu to Sonic the Hedgehog and Hello Kitty...

I will give you a graphic of that token which will be used on the board.

When you pick a token, you also put 6 numbers from 0 to 9 in spoilers (they can be any numbers, [e.g. you can put a 1 in each spoiler if you wish] you can't use a Random Number Generator to pick them), and their sum, like this (note: these aren't my numbers and are just an example)

<example removed>

You can't use an already picked sum. When you're going to play, you pick a player that you haven't picked before (until you've picked all players) and a letter you haven't picked before (until you've picked all letters), that is still available, and report on a post what you got and where you landed on the board, and your action (like buying a property or paying someone else rent, and you can start making deals with other players).

Once someone is down to 1 number, the sum gives it away, so they replace the numbers. The new numbers should use at least 4 numbers that you didn't use in the previous list.

Remember, if you get a 0 after opening a spoiler, you roll a 10, but 0s still give a sum of 0 with other numbers, this should twist things up (a player with just 0s and a 6, and a player with just 1s gives the same sum - but one only gives 1s while the other gives mostly 10s) :)

Players can start picking their tokens and sending their numbers already, it'll happen in sign up order, this is happening while sign ups are still open.

orangedragonfire, you can pick a token and post your numbers now!

Can I get some clarifications on telling other people our numbers? Do we PM or use in-thread spoilers? Which of the following is allowed:
1. Talking to bluebamebue and telling her my numbers.
2. Talking to patzer and telling him fake numbers and claiming them to be mine.
3. Talking to bluebamebue and telling her my numbers and talking to patzer separately and telling him fake numbers and claiming them to be mine.
4. Talking to bluebamebue and telling her the first 3 of my numbers.
5. Talking to bluebamebue and telling her the first 3 of my numbers and talking to patzer separately and telling him the last 3 of my numbers.
6. Telling bluebambue "Go read my numbers in my post", and bluebambue reading them.

phillip1882's token (I think I haven't welcomed you yet, welcome!):

And now, clarifications on number trading. I think it'd be outright game breaking if players could just give entire strings of their numbers to other players, so, to keep with the spirit of Dice-guessing, number trading will be heavily restricted:

-You can't tell a number of yours to another player directly, only allow them to look at one of your spoilers (i.e. "you can look at my F spoiler")
-You can only offer one of your spoilers to a sinlge player in a deal when it's your turn.
-You can freely trade the information that you have about other people's numbers in such deals.
-You can freely fake that you have information about other people's numbers in such deals.

Trades are done in @Players spoilers that other players can't read.

So, a deal may look like this:

I want Park Place.

I'm offering: $1500
The Power Service at spot 54
Permission to read my F spoiler
To tell you where Player X has the 0 that you need.

(only one Permission can be offered per turn)

Message from the bank: This is a business, not a charity! All the Red Free Parking Slots have been abolished, and now, they will charge $50 for parking. If you, however, are from our preferred customers that use our Premier Blue Parking Slot service, as a token of our appreciation, you will be given $50.

And the game starts!

Everyone starts with $3000 in metallic paper money:

Image

This isn't fake money. This money is REAL! You can actually buy stuff with it, like properties and Railroads!

Remember to use it wisely, players going bankrupt are kicked out of the game!

orangedragonfire's turn: please pick a player, and a letter A-F and open that player's spoiler, and report what you got, and your action.

This is the consequence of rolling for the first turn, for you and every other player:

1 - GO Spot: Congrats for rolling a 1! This start may seem slow, but not quite, as you can now start the game with extra $200 for landing on GO!

2 - Red Parking Spot: Pay $50 to the bank.

3 - Old Kent Road: You can buy this for $60 if unowned, or put it into auction if you don't want it. If owned, however, pay rent to the owner!

4 - Whitechapel Road: You can buy this for $70 if unowned, or put it into auction if you don't want it. If owned, however, pay rent to the owner!

5 - Community Chest!

Image

Click this link to get a number! Then open this spoiler to see what Community Chest Card you got:

2 - Bank error in your favor: Nobody is perfect, specially not bankers. You bank account appears with $200 more in it!

3 - Doctor's fees: Oops, you broke you leg, perhaps it'll bring good luck... meanwhile, pay $50 to the doctor.

4 - From sale of stock you get $50. Self explanatory, nice investing!

5 - Get Out of Jail Free: Problem Officer? You can keep this card in case you ever go to Jail. You can also offer this card in your deals with other players.

6 - Go to Jail – Go directly to jail – Do not pass Go – Do not collect $200. Now it's your chance to be visited by people visiting the Jail spot!

7 - Grand Opera Night. All players are coming this night, and you're in charge! Collect $50 from each player in the game!

8 - Income tax refund. Unbelievable! They're actually giving you $20 back!

12 - Receive $25 consultancy fee.

4 - Advance Token to next Blue Railroad! You can buy it for $200 if unowned. If owned, pay DOUBLE what you'd have paid for rent to its owner, and then go to the space named on the train. If you pass GO on your way to it, collect $200!

I would take my turn, but odf and patzer's sums are identical. odf went first, so patzer needs to change their numbers to have a unique sum.
