Ok, as Blue has not read my reminder PM, and I will probably not be around tonight, firechicago is going to replace in for Germany.

I'm going to extend the deadline by another three days given the problems with PMs, and I would be willing to extend another few days if needed, but would really prefer to get the game off the ground.

Also, I have just realised that I am even more awful than I thought at taking the requests into account for what countries you get, so sorry for that guys.

New Deadline: Saturday 21st December at 10pm GMT

Of course, I will adjudicate early if everyone submits their orders as final.

My sources tell me Blue's last visit was roughly a week ago. Maybe she'll sign on. Maybe she's busy.

In any case, I'm pretty much finalized. Everyone else, if you want to finalize, that'd be helpful. I assume we're all done. Then if Firechicago could get his stuff underway we should have the beginnings of a game.

Hello all,

I am pleased to report that after the recent unpleasantness Chancellor Otto von BlueBamBismarck has been sacked, and I, Kaiser Wilhelm von Feuershickago, have taken direct command over the armies and navies of the German Empire. Bier und Bratwurst und die Helme mit den scharfen Punkte für alle!

I have submitted tentative orders for the German military, but I would like to correspond at least briefly with each of you before I finalize these orders. I am sending out greeting to each of you now, but these may be somewhat delayed, as the telegraph here in Berlin seems to be clogged with messages from China promising herbal remedies to make one's Pickelhaube longer and pointier. As if they did not know that our German Pickelhauben are the longest and pointiest in the world!

I cordially anticipate crushing you all under our oh-so-shiny German boots.

Sincerely,

Willy der Kaiser

Very well then. My commendations at your witty messages. The great Czar, master of the defenses of the Russian Winter, awaits your communications.

And then after that, finally we should be done.

Need more time

Please un-finalize my orders or something, firechicago PM'd me and it could be important, but PMs aren't loading.

Somebody PMed me too - I can't see who it is for the same reason.

I doubt it will affect my orders, but you never know!

Gah with the PMs. Do we know if the issue is being worked on or anything?

If the PM freeze continues substantially into Fall '01 then I suggest amending the rules to make private spoilers un-readable. As someone mentioned it to me, it adds to the game dynamics in that we'll get to see who talks to each other (a feature existent in real-world diplomacy). But most importantly, it allows us to talk to one another without this game-holding nonsense.

But let's hope for the PMs pulling through.

I don't think there's any plans to fix the slow loading PMs any time soon, so we may be living with them for the years to come. I'm just glad I'm not playing any Mafia games or I'd be dropping off about now.

Anyway, fully agree with DJ's! I've been so spoiled by unreadable spoiler rules in games, if you know what I mean.

Apparently the pm issue is due to an ongoing spam deluge. davean (the forum admin) has solved this by throttling the amount of server time that can be used for the side of the board that handles logins and pms, which means that posting and reading posts runs fine, but logging in and anything connected to the user control panel is even slower than it otherwise would be. The pms are working fine for me at the moment, at least as long as I'm willing to wait a minute or two for each page to load. I've sent at least one pm to each of you, and they're all marked as read, but who knows if that means that you actually have been able to access them and read them.

Afaict, they're not 'marked as read', but merely marked as received, so they're no longer in your outbox. For example, my notification thingy at the top says "0 new messages, 2 unread messages". It used to say "2 new messages" before I clicked on it to see what the messages were. I never actually got to see what they were, but the system no longer thinks they're new.

dudiobugtron, Vytron and Djehutynakht have expressed their approval of using spoilers instead of PMs:

Spoiler:
dudiobugtron wrote:I understand that 'spying' on people's conversations if you can is an important part of diplomacy though, so I can see why you don't want to enforce the spoiler rule for flavour reasons. But all that it basically does is make spectating less interesting, and force everyone to use PMs. Anyway, just my opinion. :)

Vytron wrote:Okay, this game is turning out very hard to play because even though the forum is running at full speed, the control panel and private messages are taking WHOLE MINUTES to load, which is very frustrating, and without an Spoiler system in place in the thread, I'm going to:

Thanks, and, I'm sorry.

PMs seem to be working now, but if it becomes a substantial problem I suggest we just make spoilers un-readable.

We can give it some time though.

EDIT:

Diemo, I sent you a PM regarding my moves. It sent, I'm not sure you can access it. Let me know if you can't.

I read a PM I was sent, but wasn't able to reply to it! I also wasn't able to send new PMs of my own.

Anyway, to answer a questions I got from that PM that everyone should know - the rules linked in the OP answer the question about what you need to do to control a territory - particularly section 5 at the top-right of page 17. According to those rules, you can only gain 'control' of a territory by having a unit in it at the end of a fall turn. (Once you control a territory, you don't need to keep a unit in it though.)

Also, I'm going to point out that it's been a month and we haven't gotten through our second turn yet... although I do concede it's the holidays. In the future however I think if people aren't replying and communicating then we have to concede it's their lost.

Wait, do you mean normal discussion, as in, what we're doing right now? That's perfectly fine with me.

And, huh, no, I don't have allies.

>_>

<_<

Totally.

*Stare*

Also, I have no idea, but if there happen to be any mutual-defense pacts (country X promises to help country Y against any particular country invading them) would it just be common courtesy to claim them outright in thread? I mean, it would be unfortunate if I was to, say, hypothetically attack France not knowing whatsoever that Germany was no bound to come to his aid. It's an undeserved hiccup.

Anyways... I will continue to sit and wait. The bear watches. The claw is ready to swipe.

Instead of defaulting to holding, can one be told that one needs to specify a coast and let one do it (when it's not obvious)? You know, for people that still don't know what wethey're doing.

And it's so cool when PMs load immediately! :)

As in wait for us to tell you?

Well Vytron...

At the beginning of this turn, you controlled 3 supply centers. Following, you had 3 units.

Now you control 4 supply centers. Because of this, you are allowed to have 4 units.

This means that, during build phase, you can use any unoccupied supply centers (that you control, which is currently all) in your home country to build new units (in this case, 1 more). You have to specify which supply center you want to build this new unit in, and what type of unit it will be (if an inland center, it must be an army. If a coastal, it can be army or fleet).

So in this case, you can either build an army in Paris, or an army or a fleet in Brest.

Ja?

The only two provinces where it matters are Spain and Bulgaria. I can't check people's orders because it is a perfectly valid tactic to send in the "wrong" orders by "mistake".

With that in mind, I will no longer be checking your orders for legalitly unless requested.

Thanks DJ! No, I actually opened the PDF with the rules and read what building was about, though, it was unclear, I believed as long as one had more supply centers than units one could create units in all supply centers in home base (instead of "any"), so your message was useful.

Also

Requesting my moves to be checked for legality

Would hate if I lost twenty dollars and my self respect because a unit held because I failed at move submission (would rather lose in some other fashion). Will not use a "mistake move sending" tactic against allies.
