If triple posting was allowed to score, then this thread would stop making sense: you have to decide if you collect or if you wait, because, the points keep squaring as long as nobody else posts, so your triple post would collect as much as the third post would have collected if it was the second post.

Thus, the second post on the double post decides how many point you collected, and you can't get more until someone else posts in the thread (because your next posts would triple, not double). Though, WarDaft can correct me if this is wrong.

I'm not sure about that. It seems that that may be why the score is minutes squared, so one long interval between double posts scores more than 2 smaller ones.

I agree with this.

If triple-posts didn't count for scoring, and someone has just double-posted, there in no incentive to block another potential post by the same person, which could slow the game down.

But it says:

WarDaft wrote:but only if no one posted in between.

It doesn't say "if no one else posted in between" You are someone. The game doesn't differentiate between you posting and someone else posting. So, on a triple post, your post in the middle would be blocking the win between your first and third posts. You'd be blocking yourself. Unless you already collected on the double post and the third post does nothing.

Anyway, hope WarDaft comes in and clarifies this. If for the process of scoring, only the last two posts on the thread count, and they score if they're by the same person, triple posts wouldn't matter, and I'd be certainly wrong.

patzer wrote:there in no incentive to block another potential post by the same person

The incentive would be to try to post to try to double post and score yourself.

Yes, the second post would prevent any scoring from the first post to the third, but one would still earn points for the interval between the first and the second, and also from the second to the third.

 What a difference a missed else can make! Still would like to play in the way WarDaft intended, so will carry different point counting until he tells us which one is the correct one.

My score if only the first double post gives points and further posting does nothing: 0
My score if on a triple post, the middle post is irrelevant, and one counts the minutes between first and third posts: 0
My score if a triple post cancels any scoring because of self-blocking: 0
My score if on a triple post, the first set of double posts and the second set of double posts score independently (only two last posts on thread matter): 0

At least it's easy to calculate all

I was initially thinking that a triple post would count as two intervals, but since apparently it's really hard to triple post, the second interval will be cubed instead. I'll edit the OP.

I disagree. I think triple posts are easy enough to get, and having both intervals be squared adds a strategic element where it's better point-wise to go for one long interval, but taking multiple shorter intervals can be safer.

if the second interval is cubed, it can lead to scenarios such as a choice between either waiting 20 minutes before making a double post (400 points) or waiting 10 then another 10 (1100 points). If the second interval is squared as initially proposed then waiting 10 minutes then another 10 would only yield 200 points, which retains the strategic element originally present.

I don't know, I like WarDaft's idea of cubing, hopefully it goes up to 4 posts in a row getting tetraed and so on.

Really guys, this isn't a strategical game about when is it the best time to post next, it's just a game about blocking others from double posting. By the time you wonder if it's best to triple post in 5 minutes or 10 minutes, some guy will have beaten you to the punch.

That's risky, in that case, just posting every 2 minutes you would get twice as many points for each one. An 11th post on a 2 minute gap would be 1024 points. If there was only one person online late at night at some point, they could get a score you need scientific notation to express.

I say this is both a strategic game of when to post and a game of blocking other people from double posting, depending on how one chooses to play (and most people will be playing some mixture of the two). Anyway, it only matters whether the points are cubed or squared if you have some investment in the point-based part of the game.

If someone has 3 hours to themselves at night and posts once a minute for 180 posts in a row, then a single 2 minute gap at the end would be worth 1.5 thousand octillion. (the long scale octillion)

Actually, thinking about it some more, there's no point in tripling. It just means you are incentivised to immediately double post and then wait on a third post.
