Resetting count: competitive edition

Postby The Snide Sniper » Mon Sep 25, 2017 6:09 pm UTC

There is a counter. Every time you post, it goes up by 1, unless the last post was more than an hour ago, in which case it drops to 1. When you make a post, your team scores points equal to the value of the counter after posting.

You join a team by putting "join <team>" at the end of a post.

Additional rules:
  • You can create a team by joining a team that doesn't exist.
  • You cannot join multiple teams. If you join a team when you are already on a team, you will leave your current team.
  • The first team you join gets all of the points you would have scored before joining a team.
  • When switching teams, the team you left keeps all of the points you scored while you were on that team.
  • Double posts do not increase, extend, or restart the counter or score points, but can be used to join/switch teams.
  • You cannot join the team that has a majority (not a plurality) of the players.

So did the counter "reset" to 0 an hour after you made that post, and now my post increases it by 1, or does my post reset it to 0 now?

So this is the first post that actually increases the counter to 1?

Yeah.

Maybe the counter should start at 1.

You should probably decide soon before many people or teams start playing.

I would either have 0+1+3 points now or 1+2+4, and it would be convenient to know which.

So after this post it's 1 again (because it was more than an hour), and I'll have 1+2+4+1 = 8 when I join a team?

(and you have (1+)1+3+5 = 9 or 10, depending on whether you want to count your own first post.)

Reason: just noticed the count reset since the last post

I think technically you don't have any points until you join a team, and then the team gets those accumulated points when you do join.

So for example the first team I join will get 10 points from me, because the count after this post is 2

You now have 12 or 13 (are you counting your first post as 1?). I'm holding 14 points for my future team.

The count is now 4.

So that means the count of whichever team I'll join in the future will increase by 2 now?

The majority of all players, or the majority of players who are on some team? What about exactly half?

patzer wrote:I create "Team Purple".

You have to put "join Purple" at the end of your post.

Count is 2, and I'm holding 17 points.

My understanding of the "majority" sentence was that you can't join a team if it has more than half, but exactly half is not a majority so that's fine (and from context it seems to mean just the majority of people on a team, though obviously the OP can get back to us on both these points).

Count is 1 again, I'm carrying 3 points around.
Question: what happens if the only member of a team leaves the team? Does it disappear along with all its points or is it still available for others to join?
Nice scoreboard by the way. Can team names contain spaces or other non-alphanumeric characters like '-', '_', '/' and such?

I mean according to the wording of your rules, no one has scores before they're on a team, there's just the number of points they hold for when that happens. (I hold 22.)

If you really want to be that pedantic, noone has scores after they join a team either, only the teams have scores.
I'm associated with 5 points now.

I'll probably add it in the evening when I get home, or tomorrow. Also the scoreboard doesn't yet enforce the joining majority teams rule.

With how it's currently programmed, points stay with a team even if it has no players, and team names can contain anything except newlines. I should probably add a feature so that, say, join "Blue" and join Blue are equivalent, but I haven't yet.
