Google Game!

Postby skeptical scientist » Thu Feb 08, 2007 12:42 am UTC

Type two common words into Google. Common means that it is a valid English word, and with 99% certainty, 99% of the people who visit xkcd will know what it means (most internet denizens might know what "omgwtfbbq" means, and "vigesimal" might be a valid English word, but neither are common English words). Your goal is to get the smallest nonzero number of hits. (If you own the page responsible for a single hit, then that doesn't count.)

Post your best word pair along with the number of hits it got when you first searched it. If two separate people challenge the commonality of either of your words, it's disqualified.

Good luck!

Hm...

straw, vitamin

about 641,000 results

Now I shall wait until someone easily beats this number of results.

Edit: replacing "straw" with "cube" puts it down to 610,000

Come on guys! The pair undershirt, typo gives 582, and you're all in the tens of thousands.

I don't think "typo" should count, as it is short for "typographical error"...unless we can include ALL shortened words.

I really don't think "ballista" is that common of a word.

But if the word stays, try "nihilism" with it and you get 377 results. Ha.

Edit: Why do people always seem to post between me hitting "reply" and actually replying?

"e-mail"

3,720,000,000

Since I can't find any better common words to use for less results.

Edit: and maybe we should eliminate simple adjectives and pronouns so we don't have any smart-asses saying "the" for the most results.

polysyllabic confecture is 3!

I dont know if confecture is valid tho. It's a dictionary word, meaning preserves.

Well syzygy is a dictionary word meaning "celestial alignment or conjunction" but we can't use it here since it isn't "common".

synergy soliloquy

Are these two words common enough? It has 10 results.
I cant remember how many times my manager has used the word 'synergy' wrong...

EDIT: Oops! Haha, i was looking at the wrong number. 10 is the number on the page, the actual number of results is something like 20,900. My bad.

"unsearchable utahraptor" returns 4, "unsearchable utahraptors" returns 0. Generally, pluralizing stuff cuts down results.

Also, the one-word term "chinchillicide" (meaning murder or suicide of a chinchilla) only returns one result. This should be remedied. This also suggests a strategy: find a word that only returns one result, yet is common and real, and then find another word on that page. Thus, I give you "chinchillicide hanging."

I TOTALLY WIN.
