The thread title is really annoying. "$5 dollars" is redundant.

At least it's not "¥5 dollars"

I probably would have titled the thread "$$$ 5 Dollars! $$$", so you still get to use the dollar sign, but you don't end up with a tiny-ass title like "$5".

I'm still wondering what kind of sociology experiment this is. What meaninful data can you possibly glean from handing money to the person who makes a particular post?

See, I've had similar ideas for experiments before. Basically, I would go out onto high streets during the day, go up to someone with a fiver in my hand and say "excuse me, did you drop this?" I would then count the number of people who were honest and the number who were dishonest. I think I'd lose a lot of fivers in the process, so I haven't done it yet. I would repeat the experiment in different cities to see if any cities were more honest than others. I would then repeat it in different countries (using an equivalent note of the local currency). I'd also be interested to know if women were more honest than men, if age had an impact on the rate of honesty, etc (although I'd have to estimate age so that wouldn't be particularly scientific, it'd be split into "child, young adult, parent-aged, grandparent-aged").

But that kind of experiment would require things like collect and analyzing data, whereas here all we have to do is fool around and call it science SOCIOLOGY.

I'm just curious. What person here is going to be dumb enough to make post #111. It would basically be saying "I give up" because poster #111 presumably won't qualify to make post #112.

the #111th post can be made by the OP, what we need to do is concur on not posting number 110, that way the OP wont post the 111th and no one will take your possible 5 dollars.

what are you talking about? I'm totally making post #110 if possible. #111 is the only one that guarantees no money for me. What we should do is lie about the post count to confuse rival posters.

Sly,
You could always just say, Is this your five? if they say yes, call them a liar and if they say no, say thank you and move on. My only concern is that you would get punched repeatedly by people who said yes and you said no, you didnt I was testing you.
One of these things is not like the others.

Aside from personal safety concerns, and worries that I'll come across as a judgemental dick-head (even though, you know, I actually would be being a judgemental dick-head if I were to run this test), that method also runs the risk of a disgruntled test-subject going off and grumbling to anyone who'll listen that there's some lanky ginger wank-stain up the road asking people if they've dropped money and calling them dishonest if they say yes. That could bias the test.

They're not likely to go blabbing about the incident if they had just lied their way into being a fiver richer. Of course, another test bias could be introduced if anyone were to observe me giving away a fiver more than once. He could bring all his mates round and say there's this guy giving away fivers.

Anyway I'm not prepared to sink hundreds of pounds into a silly science experiment just yet. It was more a post suited for the Fleeting Thoughts thread.
