If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family Anatidae on our hands. –Douglas Adams

Wouldn't a non-integer base cause problems for the counting thread, since integers wouldn't necessarily have a terminating representation?

Yes, you'd be correct if we used decimals... hence the need for fractions in this base. All we need is ½. (and, for bigger numbers, 1/2

^{n}for integer values of n)

Code: Select all

`base 10 - base 13½`

1 = 1

2 = 2

3 = 3

8 = 8

9 = 9

10 = A

11 = B

12 = C

13 = D

14 = 10½

15 = 11½

16 = 12½

23 = 19½

24 = 1A½

25 = 1B½

26 = 1C½

27 = 20

28 = 21

30 = 23

50 = 39½

100 = 75½

180 = D4½

181 = D5½

182 = D6½

183 = 100¾

184 = 101¾

185 = 102¾

200 = 114¼

etc.

Now my submission for a digit for this base is:

-!- (exclamation mark surrounded by hyphens): this equals ½. Used as a purely additive suffix, rather than the other digits which may be anywhere in a number. If n is the number of exclamation marks between the hyphens, the symbol represents 1/2

^{n}. Thus -!!- would be 1/4, -!!!- would be 1/8, -!!!!- would be 1/16, -!!--!!!- would be 3/8, etc.

Is this satisfactory?

Indeed it is.

we wish we were able to make svg images. using repeated giant underscores to make a line in some in-browser online image editor on an ipad isn't exactly ideal
