Re: XKCD Fantasy NFL 2011 - League Created, Get Your Invites

Postby Adacore » Wed Aug 31, 2011 9:44 am UTC

I normally make very few changes to the personal rankings except right at the bottom end of the scale, where I like to pick out certain mid-grade rookie players I think have potential. But then I'm used to playing a keeper league, so that kind of stuff is important (and is what kept my team competitive for the championship for five years running).

Which reminds me - are we thinking of taking keepers into next year? I don't mind either way, it's probably easier not to, but it'll effect draft strategy if we are so we'll have to sort it by the end of the week.

I'd say no keepers, because we may not have the same members next year - although I think you can make it a keeper league just before the next season, if you like.

Yeah, that sounds sensible to me - we might have more players next year, and keepers would screw that up. No keepers it is.

Agreed.

Also, I think it's time to start looking for replacements?

Yeah... I wish I knew who it was we were missing. I'll send out a mass PM/email tomorrow, I've got to sleep now.

If anyone else wants to join, or y'all can find another member, send 'em here. Unless our 10th player joins the league, of course...

Thanks for the offer Ada, I'll let you know. I'm dubious about autodrafting though. Last time I did that, my first pick was some rookie running back that was supposed to be great. The problem was he 1) played for the Raiders, and 2) got injured late in the season. The rest of my team didn't do much better.

I figure The Rack is Mishrak? So that means infina is missing. He only posted once, two weeks ago, saying he'd try to do it, so we might need another person.

infina tells me that he is The Rack, so we're waiting on Mishrak or a replacement. :)

My detective skills led me astray, then. Is it possible to open up the last slot, or is the league stuck as invite-only?

Mishrak's PMed me saying ze is dropping out. I can open up the last spot, but I'd prefer not to have someone completely random in the league - I'll try asking around again; if anyone has a friend that wants in, that'd work too.

I'll play if there's still a spot open. Can't make the draft, as I'll be camping this weekend, but y'all can laugh as NFL.com makes ridiculous picks.

I would like to join, if I am not too late? Put me in as #10, and I'll figure out the NFL.com thing momentarily, only having played on Yahoo. I also played 10 years earlier, when an on-line draft was inconceivable. (Yes, I literally just signed up here, but trust me I am long time forum reader (big phorrest fan), and will introduce myself soon enough.)

From looking over the teams post-draft, I think emceng ended up with an awesome roster, especially given they were on autodraft. Foster / McFadden / Nicks / Wayne / Romo is a really solid core, and pretty much all good value at the point they were drafted.

I'm pretty happy with my team, too - I got two top WRs R2 and R3, and Roethlisberger in R6, which was my strategy (in so much as I had one) going in. Now I'm just waiting for Green Bay and Jennings to blow the Saints away on Thursday. Jakovasaur is going down!

Maybe, although Foster is still questionable, McFadden plays for Oakland, Nicks has to rely on Eli, Wayne has an injured QB and has already called out the backup, and Romo will just let you down in the playoffs.

And besides, my team of awesomeness is going to destroy you all... Or something like that.

I've got 3 great RB as starters (Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner, Shonn Green), and 3 good backups (Reggie Bush, James Starks, Beanie Wells), an amazing WR (Calvin Johonson) along with Kenny Britt, and arguably the best TE (Antonio Gates). The only position I fall short would be QB, and I have Matthew Stafford (who I trust to do good this season) and Joe Flacco.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the projections... I mean, they seem like a handy tool, but then you remember it's just a Madden game.

Very nice begging of season. With points for punt/kick-return yards looks like team "Octopus" found themselves a gem with Darren Sproles.

Tremble in fear before the 40 yards my running back achieved last night!

Well, I missed the draft, but still got Aaron Rodgers(my favorite player) and the Packers defense somehow. Also got Medenhall and Forte which are both solid RBs. My WR's are a little lacking but I already have 50 points from yesterday so it looks like I will be okay.

emceng you might be hurting for this first game.

I'm winning by 16, and all that's left is Rivers against Heisenberg's kicker. I think I got this one.

tl;dr: I don't even need a qb to get this.

I can still win it. I just need McFadden and Gostkowski to score...33 points tomorrow night. Would have been nice if my main RB hadn't wimped out at game time.

Looks like I'm the winner. I'd brag about how easy it was and how I have the most points, but I feel really bad about my opponent. Their bench gave more points than pretty much any team.

Either way, I'm one step closer to my inevitable trophy win.

Yeah, but not for 2 worse players of the same position. I'm looking for one player as good as him in another position. But now that Manning's out, I'll probably take that down.
