Do you go to college on Long Island, Mecks? Which one?

And uh, yeah, I don't care when it is, but I pretty much can only go on weekends. Unless I feel like cutting school. Eh.

Oh, I'm not really that close to Stonybrook (I live in Jericho, which is in Nassau County). Although I visited once with my brother when he was applying there. I think he got in, but he didn't go because it was too close to home. Instead he went to Duke, which is a respectable distance from his annoying family. :P

So, since this is near the end of November, is it safe to assume we're going for a March time frame here? I would love to go to the Bodies exhibit - hell any exhibit, show, event, non-event. I'm game.

Count me in as well. I'll keep checking back, and if I see anything good for groups (with ample amount of time to plan) in the newspaper or such I'll post about it for ideas.

With enough advanced notice, I might be able to schedule some vacation time to head up that way. I've been meaning to visit the old homestead in Brooklyn anyway, so this would be perfect!

Have we decided on a date/time and location yet? Maybe we could make a list of dates and places then once that list is complete (or longish) we could make a poll and work it that way?

Just to get us started...

For places:
The Met
SMac http://www.smacnyc.com/
Bars which may or may not work depending on age of participants

Times:
Friday - Sunday any time.

What about spring break? I don't know when everyone else has it (for those who are still in school), but I have a week off next month. I think the week of February 18th...That might be a good time, since it will probably be much warmer then.

Fake edit: No, wait...that's not spring break. February is still winter...Maybe it's President's Day then? I guess so. Oh, so then my spring break is in April. Probably.

What days would be good for you guys...?

(This post was so full of fail I almost couldn't handle it. But sadly, I am faced a great deal of fail every day, so I'm used to it by now. Whee!)

Another potential meetup: MoMa has a new nerdy exhibit called Design and the Elastic Mind: http://moma.org/exhibitions/2008/elasticmind/

Kind of like art for transhumans. Only drawback is MoMa is a bit more expensive then the Met.

Okay, let's have another go at this.

Freezepop is playing in New York on Friday, June 27 at The Annex.

We all love Guitar Hero and nerdpop... why not make it the focus of an XKCD meetup in New York? Tickets will probably cost $10-$15. "T3h awkward" busting drinks and/or socializing can happen before the concert.

What do you think?

I actually might be up for this... that's the night after I finish classes, so it'll totally be party time! I have to look into Freezepop though, as I'm not a Guitar Hero person and don't actually know anything by them.

Freezepop is totally happening. I'll be coming from Boston on a Chinatown bus. I haven't decided what time yet, so if any of you NYCers know of a decent place to meet at a decent time before the concert, I will be there.

@hendusoone: protip -- the Bolt Buses are way better than the Chinatown buses, and don't catch fire as frequently.

Awww, damnit!

Two weeks (or so) later and I would have been able to come, too.
I'm getting a flight to New York City with my older sister for my 18th birthday, we will be there for 10 days. I was just checking if there would be an xkcd-meetup...

Well, maybe next time
(Whenever that is)

@Shakleton: it's the summer! maybe we can do two NY XKCD meetups and accommodate everyone? (come on NYers... let's prove we're really not the nasty, unwelcoming, mean spirited folks everyone makes us out to be).

Agree with Cor: two meetups are entirely doable.

Also: I just found out that I get free passes/discounts to a bunch of museums and stuff from work, so tell me what you're interested in. It may be hard to get large groups in (I think the limit is 4 for most places), but to quote those annoying Tesco ads, every little bit helps.

Lazarus - Very cool and LoL@ Tesco.

I personally love the Met, but given that it's an XKCD meetup, maybe a trip to http://www.moccany.org/ is in order?

Shakleton - anything specific you'd want to do given that you're coming over from Europe and it's your birthday?

Yeah... you get tickets at the venue.

If they're sold out, we should have a backup plan. I propose people watching in Union Square -- I hear the nutjobs come out late at night.

Hey guys, you're awesome, do you know that? :D

So, I am in NYC from saturday, the 5th of July until including thursday the 10th of july 2008, I just checked the dates. Wednesday, the 9th of July is excludes because there is already a trip to Washington D.C. planned for that day. (cool stuff, see the white house 8) )

My birthday is actually on the 4th of september but we got the flight earlier so we could do it in my summer holidays.

So, you guys tell me. When and where? You know the city, you know what's cool! And you tell me when because I got all day anyway so it's up to you. Maybe we can go to some really cool band or do funny stuff in the city or go for a pizza. (Hmm, American Pizza, hmmm) I'm in anyway.

Thanks again,

Shakleton's age limits us to non-alcoholic activities. (Sorry man... the drinking age in this country is stupidly high -- 21, will you believe it?)

Is there anyone else planning on attending younger than 21?

If there's going to be another meetup other than the Freezepop concert (since I'm not 21 either :(), I'm pretty sure I can go! Although I do have to be a camp counselor at some Buddhist camp in upstate New York (even though I'm not Buddhist) sometime in the beginning of July. I will be Pooh-with-no-honey sad if I have to miss two NYC xkcd meetups. :(

I won't be able to go to Freezepop.

I'm unfortunately taking a 5 hour roadtrip down to DC to pick up some of my stuff from my mother's house, and then making another 5 hour road trip back the next day. D:
