New poll shows that correlation is causation

Postby mosiajam » Sat Aug 28, 2010 12:56 am UTC

No, I'm not kidding. Link. And this is so totally not satire.
Spoiler:
Okay, okay, it's satire. But I showed it to my statistics professor and he raged so hard
An overwhelming 64% of American's answered "YES", while only 38% replied "NO". Another 8% were undecided.
110%. Nice touch.

"It is really a mandate from the people." commented one pundit who wished
to remain anonymous. "It says that The American People are sick and tired
of the scientific mumbo-jumbo that they keep trying to shove down our
throats, and want some clear rules about what to believe. Now that
correlation implies causation, not only is everything easier to
understand, it also shows that even Science must answer to the will of
John and Jane Q. Public."

I used to think correlation implied causation. Then I took a statistics class. Now I don't.

I'm certain the class caused you to change your mind.

I never actually saw that dialogue take place before the xckd strip that featured it, now I have seen it take place.

Well, seeing as how this is the xkcd fora, and the comic strip in question is from xkcd, I would imagine the chances of the above conversation being genuine are close to zero.

Of course, there's that whole correlation / causation thing again, so... nevermind.

But which way does it work? Does lung cancer cause smoking now?

If I had lung cancer, I'd smoke :) (And anecdotes and one point data sets are useful in statistics!)

:me waggles eyebrows.
One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision - BR

Useful in the way I use it: to convince the others that x is true even when there is only superficial evidence. This is how I got into college. Apparently, Ivies prefer anecdotal evidence over more scientific ones.

I HATE that about college apps. It makes it easier to get in if you know what you're doing, but it's so stupid.
