## Pick a number between 1 and 100

For the discussion of the sciences. Physics problems, chemistry equations, biology weirdness, it all goes here.

### Pick a number between 1 and 100

Hello everyone.

I am procrastinating on school work and want to conduct a small experiment. If you don't mind, please give me an integer between 1 and 100 (1 and 100 are allowed) and post it here so I can tabulate the results. Please come up with it yourself (ie no random number generators like your computer or dice). Don't worry if someone else in the thread has picked it.

23. Wouldn't it help to post the reasoning, or does this somehow alter the result?

I am worried it will. It's mostly to settle a bet and to waste some of my time.

Damn you. But yes, this is kinda what I am going for. My office mate and I have a bet on how the numbers will cluster over the larger range.

I'm going to go the simplest route and choose 50.

Sorry, but this has already been done. Also, the xkcd folks are the wrong people to ask, because we know about trends like people avoiding round numbers and preferring ones with 7 somewhere, because those "feel" more random, and so on. Which means that among this group you'd probably lose any bet you made about how we're likely to cluster around particular numbers.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

### Re: Pick a number between 1 and 100

I'd say that we would be likely to go over-uniform in an attempt to avoid clustering. Of course I've now changed the result my observing it. I picked my number by:
Spoiler:
Picking a randomish 5-digit number, dividing by seven, and then taking the 2nd and 3rd digits from the end. In general, this is a pretty good strategy.

Everyone knows that 37 is the most random 2 digit number there is.

Say what?

So it evaluates to 0, which is not between 1 and 100. So it doesn't count.

I choose 25.

Ah, but what I didn't tell you is that I kept trying until I got a number that I liked, so it wasn't actually random.
