How should I decorate my dorm?

Postby PhantomReality » Sun Aug 19, 2007 5:48 am UTC

What iconic pop culture images should I decorate my dorm with? I want posters of the following things I think:

I think most colleges occasionally have poster sales, and I swear I've seen all three of those.

I think you should forget posters and paint those images right on the walls!

Personally, I think those posters are a bit cliche, and if you're going to go for that zeppelin image i'd get the one with the Stairway lyrics on it.

Right now, I have National Geographic maps stuck up there with tacky... but it sometimes falls down (on my first night in my dorm, one fell right on my head and I was so freaked!)

This is taped up on the ceiling over my bed. Apparently it's scary for love-making. I don't really notice it.

I'm a big fan of that Abbey Road one (which currently hangs in my room), and Led Zepplin is always a good decision.

Might I make another suggestion?

I would second that Abbey Road reccomendation -I have a huge copy of that in the place honor above my computer desk at the moment, and it hung proudly in my dorm room, while I had one.

I wouldn't put any of those up, but that's mostly because they don't mean a lot to me. For reference, the four posters on the wall in front of me are a stylised Darth Vader, a copy of the Empire Strikes Back movie poster, a POTC poster and a cool picture of Machu Picchu.

At the dorm I was in the students had painted an epic Lord of the Rings mural in their dorm room. In the '70s. (It had, unfortunately, been painted over.)

I vote Escher for decoration. And, if you're into controversy, a confederate flag.

On my wall, I have....

A pirate flag (That's actually the one I have and the place I bought it from. I HIGHLY recommend that site for quality flags, and they have EVERYTHING you could possibly want)

The Elitism demotivator lithograph (I bought mine from Thinkgeek long ago, but getting it from the manufacturer is a better idea these days)

An AMD Promo poster (hueg pictar of some S754 Athlons and a GIGANTOR AMD logo)

An AMD/Valve Half Life 2/Athlon64 promo poster

Hmmmmm. Aren't those posters a bit cliche for dorm rooms? I dunno. Maybe I'm just too old and grouchy for such things anymore.

I do think the pirate flag would be pretty awesome, though.

I'm one for flags myself... Had a flag of school colours and a Texas flag (as that was my birth-state).

I guess really less is more in the dorm space. Though, that's easy to say for me I suppose, most of the rooms that I lived in were arranged in such a way that it left little to no open wall space.

I had an awesome poster of an F/A-18 at dusk with supercritical shocks coming out of the engines when I was young. Of course, at the time I had no idea what that meant, but it looked pretty sweet.

I had an Escher carving up (I think Waterfall), a photo of a train that ran through the wall of a station and the engine (this is a well-done CGI rendering of the scene; I couldn't find the actual photo), and a poster with a bunch of stupid quotes by Bush.

And the electromagnetic spectrum...

Just stick all the xkcd comics up, and if there arent enough, put some shirts up too.

And if that still doesnt cover the entire surface area of the room, print out the introduction threads, and stick them up.

Foil isnt bad either, and if you connect them all together it might stop people hacking your wireless while acting as one hell of a TV antenna. Or it should have some effect on electronics anyway.

Another possibility is to soundproof it with foam or egg cartons, then play music all night.

The last idea I'll put in is to print out all the work you do and stick it to the wall.

Right now I have a poster of the periodic table right next to an EMR spectrum poster by my bed. I'm still trying to find a poster with a table of integrals on it. Aside from that, I have some random posters like a poster from the Salinas International Airshow from 1990, a full-sized movie poster for Char's Counterattack, and a couple of posters from the theatre group Sound & Fury. If you're going to take quite a few chem classes, the periodic table poster is a must.

The only poster I've actually made a conscious decision to procure for my wall is everybody! everybody!

I have a Millennium Actress poster that I got at a free screening at Kendall, and an Escher poster that someone got me as a gift. I'm the kind of guy who wears any free t-shirt because it's a free t-shirt, so I put em up.

Also I have a picture of Coiffio from Perfect Hair Forever that my sister painted me with the caption "put it on your neck stalk". It's so cool that I don't even mind that it's actually one of Uncle Grandfather's lines.

For context: early-20s male born and living in Australia of UK [Norman]/USA [Western European Jewish] heritage. My blog.

My roomate has already purchased the back one for our room. There will also be a blues brothers poster, mars volta poster (cover of frances the mute), muse concert t-shirt, a gi-joe poster, and two transformers posters that go together. (I got them from walmart--the one says "Some will come to defend us" and shows the autobots. The other says "Most will come to kill us" and shows the decepticons. SO win.)

Anyway, I say you should rasterbate all the images suggested, until your room is one giant pantheon to internet art.

My decorative move has always been to take all the stacks of free CDs they hand out at stores, string them up and hang them from the wall, for added effect get a little discoball so that the lights reflect off the CDs.

My university room is decorated by photographs I took and some card-sized ones by other people (I'm too cheap to buy real art, I buy it card-sized), large paintings by me and this poster.

In my first year, I had Van Gogh's Starry Night. I swear a million times over I didn't know it was so stereotypical. I just loved it- along with everyone else. Although because it's viewed as so typical, not many people actually had it on their wall.

I love to decorate my side of the room; my roommate habitually forgets and then does nothing. Those white cinderblocks are just so depressing without something on them, so get as much as you can.

I agree that your own art / photography is a really good idea. That's what I've got. Also, printed out comics for around the desk or random cool magazine ads. The best thing about that is, it's cheap, and if you decide you don't want to wake up to it anymore you can just throw it away.

Or if you really like it, take it to a UPS or something store and get it laminated. I recommend doing this to posters especially. It's pretty cheap, and definitely worth it to make your stuff beer-, drunkard-, and rip-proof. Plus you save the $10/poster or whatever each year by not rebuying it, if you like it that much (I have a few of those).
