Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Postby samwho? » Sat Aug 29, 2009 5:40 pm UTC

Hey, my name is Sam and I hail from the far away land of Wales :) I'm 18 years old and will be going to study Computer Systems Security at University in approximately three weeks. I have a rather unhealthy obsession with computers, how they work and, well, just about everything to do with them. This summer I've been learning the basics of HTML, CSS and JavaScript (web design, basically) and I know a little bit of C# but not enough for my liking, so I'll be looking further into that in the foreseeable future (I'm right in thinking it's better to start with just plain C, right?). I also enjoy maths (up to A level standards(calculus was awesome!)), music (listening, playing and writing, primarily on a guitar) and being a little bit different to everyone else.

As you can see I haven't actually gotten around to doing anything apart from posting here on these forums yet but I've been reading xkcd for a little over a year I think. I was watching the video on YouTube where Mr Munroe did a talk at what I believe was the Google HQ and decided I might actually have a deeper look into the xkcd "cult" I suppose it can be called :) So you will probably see me poking around the forums in the weeks to come and I hope to get to know some of you better! If you do feel like asking me something then I'm a pretty open book and will do my best to answer ^_^

Thanks,
Sam

I'm John. I recently turned eighteen (the 24th of August, in case you were wondering), and I'm interested in the things most nerds are. I read science fiction books, take lots of AP classes, and spend time making my computer look neat. I dabble in photoshop on occasion, and use the spellcheck features in pidgin and firefox.

I can't think of anything clever to say in this post.

Hello. I'm Andrew, as the username might suggest. I'm not good at inroductions.
I'm sixteen next week. Wednesday next week. That's 09/09/09 if you're interested. I bet you're not. I bet, if you actually took the time to read this introduction, that you will have been disappointed.
(Sixteen also happens to be the age of consent here in the UK. )
I live on a remote Scottish island, which isn't fun at all because there is a lack of interesting people. Therefore, the internet is necessary in order to find people to talk to. Hence my joining an internet forum-thingy.

I like computers (really?) and I run Ubuntu. But I like Windows, Mac OS, and Linux-based operating systems. They all have their pros and cons, and nobody got anywhere by shouting MY OS IS BETTER THAN YOURS at other people. The same applies to browsers. Yes, even Internet Explorer has its advantages.

I also apparently like maths (with an "s" 'cause I use British English like that) and physics. But I'm essentially still a noob at both compared to many members of this forum.

I listen to music (Primarily Radiohead and Death Cab For Cutie, says my Last.fm profile) and podcasts and stuff.

There, I made an attempt. Thank you for your time. Or something.

(I also have a tendency to use short sentences, if you haven't noticed.)

Cool, nice birthday, though it would be more awesome if you were in fact turning 9. I, too, have come from an isolated island so know your pain, my advice is to leave to go to uni, though you might be surprised how much you miss the isolation at times.

Have fun around the fora!

Hey everyone,

My name is Saphy and I live in the US woot woot. :D I'm going to be a senior in high school once school starts and I'm sorta looking forward to it. Wish I was in college already. >.< These college applications are killer. Ugh. Enough about that though.

I love playing Ultimate Frisbee, and if anyone questions its validity as a sport I will yell at them. Just kidding. But seriously. IT'S A SPORT. Pretty much all my friends are also on the team and we like to play pick-up or just throw a disc around any time we can. It's a lot of fun.

I'm also an amateur artist. I doodle all the time and do some paintings at school as well. Some of my work can be found here: vincevalentine19.deviantart.com However, that is not always updated seeing that I'm not a huge fan of taking pictures of all my works that are larger than my scanner haha. I'm lazy, deal. :P But I'm furiously art-ing away these days; I hope to finish all my projects before school starts. -crossed fingers-

On to why I'm here. I've been reading xkcd for quite a while now and I absolutely love it. Though I don't always get some of them (like the computer jokes... heh I'm not a computer person.. I'm pretty tech savvy but I don't program or take apart computers in my spare time. XD) I still love the site. All time favorites include Grown-Ups and Hamster Ball, among others of course.

I read a few other webcomics, including Abstruse Goose, Surviving the World, Girls with Slingshots, and Questionable Content. <3<3<3

I'm definitely a science person. I used to be good at mathematics, but after that calculus course I'm not so sure. >.< But I definitely like biology and chemistry. Physics not so much, unfortunately haha. Oh well.

Well, that's about it for now. :)

I used to enjoy reading, but after three years of working at a library reshelving books, its become more of a love-hate relationship.

Hi Monika. My favorite language right now is Java (with C++ being a close second), although last semester I got to work in a relational programming language that was being worked on by the PhD student of my Programming Languages professor, and that was a great deal of fun.
My preferred genre is Mystery, I'm particularly fond of Agatha Christie's novels as well as the Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
I'm not Japanese. Rather, the name comes from a couple hobbies that I forgot to mention, which are studying martial arts (I've studied Tae Kwon Do for a few years, a semester of Judo, and have just started a semester of Escrima), and role-playing games in the vein of D&D. One such game I've played is Legend of the Five Rings, and for some reason I enjoy playing martial artists (typically monks who specialize in unarmed combat, since they tend to be the best martial artists in L5R), and Togashi Mazosha was the name of my first monk. I've used the name of handful of times since, and chose to use that particular name on the fora.

I think Java is the greates programming language on earth 8) . A relational programming language - for databases? Like SQL?
I also like mysteries :) .
I really like your avatar picture. I can just imagine my two kitties reaching for the "Yes" button!

This relational programming language (called miniKanren) allows you to write procedures that can run forwards and backwards, and you can feed your procedures as little or as much information as you want, and the language will provide all possible outputs. The simplest way to explain how that works is with an example. Say I wrote a type inferencer for a small set of procedures for Scheme (the language miniKanren is written in), I could write a short Scheme function that is recognizable by the inferencer, run it through my miniKanren program and get the type that this short procedure should output. Alternatively, I could just as easily give the inferencer a type, and it could return all possible procedures it can recognize that will output that type.
