Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Postby backrub » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:46 pm UTC

uh. call me backrub (as in googles original name, and perhaps the fun verb as well), or charlie. i am 19. i am going to a community college, and a plan to transfer to U of M in a year or so. my ultimate goal is to get a Ph.D in computer science.

i honestly never noticed there was an xkcd forum before, or i would have been here a long time ago. (i use rss feeds to read the comic.. so i am never on the site) (side note, rss feeds rule!) but i am glad i found it. i am going to Penguicon this year, and Randall himself will be there. as i am sure many of you will be there. so i hope to make some cool friends on here, and we can totally hang at penguicon.

i sometimes have a little trouble becoming active on forums this large and this active. but you guys seems cool, so i might be able to squeeze in somewhere.

*peace*

Hi, I'm new, but I've been reading the comic for a year or two. Thought I'd join the forum cause the others I frequent are going to hell, and you guys seem pretty cool, eh, smart and doesn't afraid of anything.

Sorry.

Question.
How much of sticklers are you all about posting the right posts in the right fora. And etiquette. Any heads up?

Linking before FIVE posts is pretty much frowned upon. Intro thread has already been posted in, though that's not necessary. Other than that, as long as you're not a spambot or a troll and at least attempt to go into the right forum, who really cares about where you post?

Oh, I just thought a forum full of nerds might like to have things put in there right places. Some do, some don't. Thought I'd ask before I posted something followed by a bunch of "wrong forum," or "there was already a topic about this last week."

Oh, now I understand you. As to "wrong forum" complaints, it shouldn't be that hard to figure out. For "there was a previous topic", there's a search function at the upper right, but it doesn't seem to work all that well. Use it, and apologize if you make a mistake.

First post, huzzah. I have been lurking in the forums for a month or so now so it only seemed polite to register.

Eskay Diasz is not my actual name, but if it were it would be far more interesting then my current 'cookie cutter' name.

Previous internet forum compatriots have oft accused me of being a robot, but I assert that this is an incorrect assessment.

I shall be eighteen in twenty-one days and I still do not have a driver's license. Why, you [are failing to] ask? The reason lies behind the last time I attempted to drive a car. My mother brow-beated (beaten? beat? beaterized? Potato?) me into a nervous break-down and a near-miss with an apparently possibly disastrous impact and I have not been allowed near a driving wheel device since.

Yes. Fascinating.

Oh yes, words are fun-inducing.

Hello all. My nom de net is Outchanter and I'm a twenty something human. I think the sciences, music, fiction and webcomics are fertile grounds for the finding of awesome - which is why I'm a maths student who plays the cello, reads Terry Pratchett and regularly checks on xkcd. Outside of xkcd I'd say my favourite webcomic is The Order of The Stick.

I could prove I'm not a spambot by giving the secret password. But then it wouldn't be a secret, would it?

I'm often sarcastic, so I wouldn't take everything I say in total seriousness. /me is guilty of not reading the rules, and posting first, and bla bla you know... But to save myself from flames that i can feel licking my feet i have not broken any rules (yet? huh?) and Im a pretty upstanding citizen of the tubes.

(Why i didn't read the rules? not because i think they dont apply to me or something like that. I didn't read them because i have enough sense to behave normally, and i generally lurk around for a while before getting adventurous with postings)

Now that i read the rules and found (aside from the generic block of "dont be a dick" stuff) some quite useful things, Im quite pleased to discover that this place is very organised i think.

Ok, well, to introduce myself- Ima total lunatic, in a geeky way. I try not to take things that I cannot affect seriously. I come from Ukraine and lived a sizable chunk of my life in UK near leeds. Studying IT Systems & networking right now but two last years i did Manufacturing engineering (HA i know how to spell it !). I give myself title of Eng. (and force others to do) every time i do/fix something to other's amazement, even tho i haven't earned the status officially yet.

I usually have pointless conversations about all sorts of stuff that seems to bore everyone else (especially girls that i meet) so for now i will say no more. I can say i do pretty much all the stuff that ive seen in the comics (which i thought was just a pure genius and connected with me very tightly) "floor is lava (or sometimes lazors from quake II)", calculating the best line to take corners at, walking in patterns on tiles, trying to solve a RL situation with a kb shortcut. Oh yea thats most funny, In my electronics class the tutor specifically told me *NOT* to probe a diode bridge with an o-silly-scope. poof. I was like, "relax" to my group, "that can easily be fixed" and then i realized that i cant do ^Z

I could go on.

Hello!

Been reading xkcd for about a year or so now, and lurking on the forums for several months (mostly the science folder).

I'm in my third and final year of a Physics with Astrophysics BSc course in the UK. In fact I should be working on my project report instead of posting here, but oh well. :P

Favourite videogames: GoldenEye (still my favourite - hence the avatar), Perfect Dark, Metal Gear Solid 3 (mainly for the OTT Kojima weirdness), NiGHTS Into Dreams (and Burning Rangers!), the early 2D Sonic games, Amplitude (alas, not played Guitar Hero), Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Sega Rally. Sadly I have not yet joined the current generation of consoles.

Music: The Beatles, Radiohead, Björk, Gorillaz, REM, The Who, Pink Floyd, Oasis, Blur, RHCP. Amongst others.

Webcomics I read other than xkcd: Ozy and Millie, Sinfest, Sequential Art and, of course, The Perry Bible Fellowship.

Hi. My name is Rick, and I'm a geek. I'm currently a sophomore in high school. I live near Boston, so I went to the XKCD meetup in September. I was wearing a black tee-shirt (like that's a helpful description) and spent much of my time there on top of the climbing structure. I enjoy playing video games, playing the saxophone, singing, and fencing épée.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I've been reading the comic for about a year now, but just now decided to join the forums.

Hi all,

I can't remember how I found XKCD, but I started reading some of the earlier work and got hooked. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in real life who appreciates the style of humour in XKCD, so I guess I kind of signed up to have a chance to talk to people with a similar mindset.

I'm originally from Australia (6th largest country by land area), now living in Singapore (ranked #191, just above Isle of Man). I laugh when people here tell me it takes a long time to get across town.

Oh, and I found the XKCD CAPTCHA harder than most. I'm pleased that I now have an additional piece of evidence indicating that I'm probably not a spambot, however.

Greetings everyone! My name's Mike. I'm a graduate of WPI (BS ECE '05) and BU (MS CSE '06). I'm currently a software developer at a company that makes TV broadcast radios and other such equipment. My hobbies include reading (mostly sci-fi and fantasy), live-action roleplaying and video games.

I heard about xkcd from someone at some point (can't remember who or when) and have been reading it ever since.

Welp, long time lurker and reader of the comic, finally decided to hit that register button. So let me tell you about me.

I'm a College Freshman, studying Music Education right now. It's a bitchy major, for sure, but I'm doing what I love.

I'm from Coastal GA, so I have access to fresh seafood, and lots of it. Crabs are delicious.

I'm a big video game nerd, and I do like anime a bit. Also, personally can't wait for Brawl. March 9th just isn't coming soon enough.

Also, I can play a variety of instruments. Not great, but I can play them. Saxophone is my main, and I'm working up the Flute and Clarinet for doubling purposes, and I have to play the piano. Yay piano.

And that's about it for now. See you guys on the forum!

Hi!
my age is "sweet" and I'm from the Philly area.
I enjoy music, instruments/singing, math, and Jon Krakauer books

I've been reading XKCD for at least a year, and find only too often that it perfectly describes my life.
my favorite comics are probably "dreams" and "your mom"...
I also read questionable content, a softer world, indexed, and married to the sea.

yay!

I'm a long-time lurker who was motivated to finally post by the fetish thread. I will not be entertaining any analysis of my underlying mental issues based on this fact. *lalalalalala* I can't hear you! I have managed to visit all 7 continents and spent extended periods on 4 of them (> 1 year). Grammar-Nazi parents use my posts to scare their children into studying harder so they don't sound like illiterate morons when attempting to write a simple Intro Post. I believe myself to be considerably older than the vast majority of posters here chronologically but considerably younger emotionally.

I am sick of starting sentences with I.
