winds around the world - real time

Postby steve waterman » Thu Dec 19, 2013 4:10 pm UTC

Cameron Beccario has just made this new app that shows winds from all over the globe. There are several different levels that can be seen as well as several different projections.
Among these are the Waterman Butterfly labelled as WB.
http://earth.nullschool.net/
From there click on "earth" to see the menu and then "earth" again to have only the map.

That is wonderful; I think.
Of course, I am having difficulty using it.

I made the earth so small, it is a little pen mark on the page.
I can't make it get big, again. Darn.

Here is another wind map.

If you like one, you might like the other.

oh. Here is another one i don't know how to use correctly.

That's really cool! :)

And Steve, I hope you're recovering well from past health issues. Cheers, and happy holydays.

Thank you.

It is so beautiful.

The height button on the menu is so interesting.
The projection button is funny.

WB is an old projection I had on my wall at one time.
Bucky had something to do with that map. right?

edit: yes.

No, this Waterman Butterfly projection is just of my own creation...based upon a cluster of spheres in an fcc format having a maximum distance from a central sphere of the square root of five.

That's really neat, Steve. Aside from all of Beccario's wind stuff, which is awesome in itself, I'm having fun moving the WB around and seeing how the continents react around the breaks.

That is so cute!
It is funny, too.

The wind map is beautiful.
Such a nice thing to have on a large screen.
It is Art!

It might be useful, too.

addams, you're probably thinking of the Cahill butterfly map, originally published in 1909. Bucky's Dymaxion didn't show up until 1943.

Cartography. That is difficult stuff.

This may be the first time I have looked at a Butterfly Map.
I was thinking of Bucky's Map.

That was the alternative view of the world I was offered.
So, I looked at it.

The wind map is beautiful.
It shows the Jet Stream?

That is amazing. It is true?
I am not able to use it. Yet.

If winds start to blow hard enough for me to check them against the map.
I will lose internet and will not be able to check them against the map.

It is, still, beautiful and illuminating.
The air flow on our planet is interesting.

Edit:
This is the first mesmerizing meta data map I was ever exposed to.

Yes, from the menu...different heights above the Earth surface can be seen....1000 hPa is lowest and 10 hPa is highest...the jet stream is at 250 hPa.

There are other options available from the menu too...like the wind forecast for tomorrow...click on control >>.
Also, if you click on a location...it will tell you the winds and that location ( for the height selected ).

the app has just added a couple of more options, including temperature. One can just click on any location and get the local temperature reading. http://earth.nullschool.net/

Just yesterday I was trying to find a web based map that would allow panning in various map projections, so you could see how the landmasses look when the projections were based on orientations other than north pole on top. This is wonderful, not to mention all the other data it contains.

On the map Waterman left,
I see an off shore wind at 10.
http://earth.nullschool.net

What the heck does 10 mean?

There is a high pressure system bothering some of the people of the Pacific NorthWest.
It was fairly high. Had to be. The Air stopped moving. It was Great. Weird, but great.

The people in the valleys ran away from the fog, smog, cold and creepy weather.
They came over here and told me stories. They got the fog. We got sunshine and blue skies.

http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/sat-bin/disp ... C_SCALE=15

Weather Stations.
And; Satellite Photos.

Fine! Who has records of Barometric Pressures?
That might be a fun record to read.

If I found the record, Would I know what it is?
How will it be labeled? (ech) Weather.

Barometric pressure is a strange scale.
When the pressure goes up, the temperature can do most anything.
When the pressure goes down, it is time to tie things down.

The guys that figured that out were geniuses.
Maybe the Navy has records.

How often do they dump the data?

http://earth.nullschool.net/ ....has been improved to include more than just wind

Wind – Temp – RH – AD – WPD [ wind - temperature - relative humidity - wind power density ]
| TPW – TCW – MSLP [ total precipitable water - total cloud water - mean sea level pressure ]

as can be seen on 8 different projection types
