Oh, and this is UK university stuff - NO ONE gets 90.

I feel your pain, I just finished marking stats homework (I'm a biologist, but my boss teaches the stats course, so I get landed with all his marking). So many stupid mistakes, I don't mean genuine errors or not getting the right answer because of a cocked up calculation, but things like 0.009>0.05. ARGH. NO.
I have a rubber stamp that says ARSE in big letters and red ink, but I think I'd get in trouble if I used it on the students' work...

my FRT: you know when you're just drifting off to sleep, and you get the fear about something. That. I don't know why I was thinking about it, but I'm worrying about my viva (which isn't until the summer), that I'll have done something dumb and I'll get hauled over the coals for it and fail my PhD. Even though I know all my science is sound, and the analyses are right.
I think it's just that I'm starting to write up whilst finishing off my lab work and getting in a stress about it all.
ARGH!
and now I'm worrying and can't get to sleep. :|

My father's a lecturer, and I hear about many of the silly things in the tests he's marked...

One of my favourites is the (surprisingly many) people who, when they have to graph some data, say: {(1,1), (2,3), (3,6), (5,8)} and fit a line... they'll draw a graph where the X axis reads 1,2,3,5, and the Y axis reads 1,3,6,8, and draw a 45 degree line through that. Because that's useful.

Though, my absolute favourite has to be that once, someone was late handing in an assignment, allegedly because of technical issues, and was trying to talk his way out of having marks taken off for being late, since it wasn't his fault. When he eventually handed it in, everything was correct, except one graph, that was absurdly upside-down, and completely meaningless. The answer guide, which had been given to the other students in the meantime, had, due to a printer's error, one of the graphs printed upside-down.

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}
[he/him/his]

Anyone else wishing they had picked up apples and peanut butter at the store today? Pears would also be grand. But only if they are the pretty brown kind that look like paper.

FT: It's my Dad's birthday today. His birthday present that I ordered hasn't arrived yet. When I phoned yesterday to enquire, it turns out that the company I ordered from is actually a crazy guy in a shed. A highly entertaining crazy guy who spent half an hour telling me about his portable forge he takes to re-enactment events. My Dad is highly amused, and is tending towards being a crazy guy in a shed himself, so it's all good, really.

tl;dr: When I grow up (?) I'm most likely going to be a crazy guy in a shed.

There's this guy from some old book that told some other guy (through some bushes) how to talk with some woman. The guy had a long nose. They always do an episode like that in bad high school comedies. What's his name?

I need to figure out how to put tags into my phone's contact book.

A tag for whether or not people text, a tag for family, a tag for coworkers at job a, coworkers at job b, etc.

Using text-type bitflags would work (currently all my coworkers are "w Name" or "wt Name" and my family members that don't have titles (gma -> grandma, a -> aunt, u -> uncle) are marked as f. (tho, That really only leaves cousins, that could be c) but then adding a bitflag for texting or not would be interesting. (maybe stuffixing ' t' or some other symbol?)

After doing that presentation in Spanish class, I've had the phrase "Yo tengo sed para las cervezas muy frio" stuck in my head. I just keep saying it randomly to people for whatever reason.

People probably think I'm an alcoholic, and I barely even drink :lol: If they understand of course...

Spoiler:
Well, I understood the bit about Snow Crash, itself, a virus that would literally own your mind if you were able to comprehend it. And, thanks largely to Hiro's infodump to Lee and Enzo near the end, I think I understood how the Sumerian tied into it.

I got a little lost when he started crossing over from "psychological virus" to "physical virus." Really, the whole metavirus thing. As I understand it, he's saying that every system that processes information will eventually develop viruses, and that after the human genetic code was over-competed, the brain became a new spawning ground for linguistic viruses that spread directly through language. And the metavirus is Asheran or whatever her name was, a biological virus that made you more susceptible to mental viruses, which is why the Babel thing had to happen, to limit the possible spread of any linguistic viruses.

Basically I think I'm getting hung up on the barrier between psychology and biology, and it may make a lot more sense in the morning. The bit about getting Snow Crash from space did bother me, though, because it seemed to assume a lot about alien psychology.

Awesome book, though.

I was walking home from buying a pack of smokes when I heard an odd noise. Sorta like hard plastic being squeezed. A fraction of a second later, a loud boom resounded from the same approximate direction. I don't think it was gunfire or a (combustion) explosion, it sounded differently (overall the noise was pretty low frequency). It was loud as hell though.

My best guess is that it was some sort of pressurized container that didn't like cold temperature, and exploded (or imploded?)

Terraforming: the ridiculous way.

Move Venus into an orbit near Earth, but far enough away not to involve tidal forces. Hit it with Pluto (no more planet debate) for water and a 24 hour day, and use the CO2 for oxygen and carbon nanotube building material. Then comes the fun part: move Mars into the asteroid belt. Heat, mass, and rotation all at once.

Idea: collect the moons of Saturn and/or Jupiter for a fourth planet.
