I imagine it's like that to avoid confusion among non-English speakers who wouldn't read "ph" correctly... same as spelling "Juliett" with two T's (because the French would read it with a silent T if there was only one, and "Juliette" would have a spoken final E in some languages).

Or you could use the Vohu System, where you give an obscure, long, and technical name for each letter that rarely starts with the correct one.
Example: Sally= S as in 'center', A as in 'antidisestablishmentarianism,' L as in 'Ljubljana,' L as in 'Elvis,' and Y as in 'Xylophone.'
When they ask how to spell that, start spelling one of the example words.
If you want to be even more annoying, send them a telegram while still using this process; the annoyance, however, comes from the fact that you're actually sending them a telegram, not because of the spelling.

Or the Thompson system, where P words are spelled with words that start with P but not with a /p/ sound: "P as in pseudoscience."

I'm afraid that one thing I say wrong in a moment of anger/honesty/expression my opinion/whathaveyou will spark the holy-mother-of-god arguments/debates oh WHY I AM WRONG and insult flinging. x.x

I was watching an old rerun of the X-files yesterday. Mulder called Scully in the middle of the night, asking her to come over and listen to a part of an audio tape where he recognized a voice, On her way, Scully got kidnapped. ... Fridge logic sucks.

Yesterday, I watched an old Transformers video I bought from a second-hand shop. One of the episodes on it involved Grimlock becoming hyper-intelligent after being infused with large amounts of anti-electrons (which were purple, liquid and kept in glass jars). He used his new-found intelligence to create the Technobots, then transferred his intelligence to their merged form to help them defeat a merged Decepticon.

Your X Files sounds like it makes a lot more sense.

Also, in digging through my unused clothes for something to wear while doing the laundry, I found a turtleneck. Awesome! I feel like a French assassin from the '60s!

Seems an awful like cybertonium, this anti-electron stuff. Cybertonium is purple, behaves like a liquid, and fills up glass cubes. It's the only thing that keeps the Transformers alive, but alas ! it's only available on Cyberton; which was held by the Decepticons. They had to send Spike & Carly, the two humans, to retrieve the cybertonium, and for some reason the Dinobots had defected and no longer sided with the Autobots.

I... I remember that episode from when I was 9 years old.

Guh, I want to vomit. And sleep. Spoiler'd for sick person whining:

Spoiler:
So my stomach's been upset for the past two days. Today during my evening class it started feeling a little acidic, even though I'd been eating and drinking nothing but crackers and ginger ale, so I went to the store and got some bread to eat, some bananas, and some immodium. Took the immodium and an antacid, ate some bread, had a banana. It's been four hours since I've done that and my stomach hurts, I feel really naseous, and I can't sleep. I'm hoping I'll get better, as I have a meeting I really should make it to tomorrow, but things are looking grim. I admit, I'm also considering going to the hospital because I feel so miserable, but I'm not sure if it's at the point where it justifies a (probably every expensive even though I have insurance) visit to the late-night E.R. Bleeeeh.
There's a method to my madness. Somewhere. Don't worry, I'll find it!

If a dog is "man's best friend" and there are so many dog lovers in the world, and dogs are so great, why is it such a great insult to call someone a dog? I mean I know it's different in different cultures, but in my culture there are many positive traits generally ascribed to a dog, including loyalty, cuteness, etc. and yet in the same culture to call someone a dog is insulting.

Cause everyone knows that cats are actually superior, it's just that some people with inferior characters find them too challenging to be around and thus associate with dogs. But they know.

It may be related to 'animal'. Dogs were probably the most common nonhuman animal to see when the usage first formed, and it replaced the bestial implications of 'animal'.

Or that may be completely wrong, but I couldn't find an etymology of it.

I love how you can track the spread of an idea on wikipedia. A few years ago, I found an article called "The Novikov self-consistency principle". It was kinda stub-ish mentioning that it resolved some paradoxes. Googling this principle didn't really give much useful information either. Then, over the years, the article has become bigger and bigger, and more and more websites have cropped up mentioning it. Now it's very long, with examples in pop culture and whatnot. I'm so proud, the Novikov principle is all grown up.
