I just got BM'ed by tumblr I think. Don't know when I last(or ever) visited the site, and went to three links to blogs there this morning(all from the forums here). Also, I learned today that I really dislike tumblr's page layout.

I wouldn't have been nearly as offended if the artist had also drawn the male characters in suggestive poses, showing off their rippling abs and gratuitous packages. If we're going to degrade one character, we're going to degrade them all.

While the article is funny, it fails at doing the maths.

According to the USGS, there are about 1,386*1018 m3 of water on earth. Assuming the smallest definition for a drop the spill was 50 μL (one "metric" drop). Divide that by the total water on earth, and you get 3,607-26, or, in homoeopathic terms, ~ 13C / 26D.
So a regular homoeopathic remedy of 30C would be turned into a 43C and the 8000D dilution that hit the fire fighters would become a 8026D at most, which is way below 9000 so there's no threat.
Also, for the fire fighters to be exposed to 8000D, the original solution must already have been at 8000D, since all the water in the Thames is probably not enough to raise it from 7900D to 8000D. To turn one drop of a 400D dilution into an 8000D, one would need 107591 m3 of water.

So the spill reaching the sea would be bad in that it would threaten a larger population, but the dilution would not change by any appreciable amount.
One of the things that make homoeopathy so amusing is the way it zooms straight past astronomical numbers, skips merrily through the space of economical numbers and settles peacefully in the realm of numbers that have no useful meaning at all.

edited for maths failure

You know, I can approve of a plot detail like this if only because it has comedic, horror and 'wtf' value in equal measure.

Also because the reactions of any male character upon finding out about this would more than likely be interesting on a number of levels.
I really should be working right now, but somehow I don't have the energy.

Arguably wrong, though, as it's been established a hundred times over that a Dalek can be rendered useless by merely covering it's eye.

And.. you know what? I'd say it was different if this was Issue #57 of the line with the third or fourth writer, not counting the six or seven guest writers here and there.
Spoiler:
But this.. what DC is doing RIGHT NOW is restarting the entire fucking line, throwing out a lot of the conventions and established history and so on with the sole purpose of Getting New People Reading Comics.

That's the point - to get more people picking up the issues. Hell, a comic that wasn't selling well enough and got canned in the mid 90s sold more than the top seller today. The US Superhero market is in the shitter. So they restart everything, brand new, don't need to know shit to get into it, we'll tell you everything along the way...

And that's what they open with.

I mean.. fuck. Fuck the Starfire thing for a bit, and let's talk about Catwoman as I address this to whoever happens to be reading it, so just go with it...

If you're not already female, imagine you are. Imagine that you're aware of Batman and his various foes, and you're aware of Catwoman. You're even aware enough to know that she's not really a villain, but more of an independent player in the grand Batman Vs. Evil game, that sometimes she's helping Bats and sometimes she's being chased by him. But you don't read comics, so you don't really know the details and you don't feel like reading Wikipedia for six hours to get where you'd feel somewhat confident buying an issue of something or other. But you're aware enough to know that the Comic world considers her an empowered female who is treated as an equal by her peers, has skills and such that make her in demand.. skills that range beyond a body that looks good in a catsuit. She's more than a pretty face, she has been and continues to be a dangerous person and can be a matched opponent to the goddamn Batman that apparently everyone on the internet has a crush on, considering the number of "How would Batman beat X" posts you can find everywhere.

So you hear DC's doing this thing, you don't know the details, you just know they're making it easier to get into comics. That a lot of the comics are starting over, and there's a lot of #1 issues that supposedly don't require any knowledge of the character. Fuck it, you think, and you buy Catwoman #1.

And the first panel that greets you is tits.

The last panel? Bat-on-Cat fucking.

So what are the odds you're going to buy #2, again?

So right there, in the grand experiment, you've managed to alienate a shitton of first time readers, alienate a shitton of long time readers, and give a shitton of ammunition to the Comics Are Created By 14 Year Old Boys Who Like Giant Tits And Explosions crowd.

Good job, DC. Good job.

*edit* Or, to put it another way.. When a 7 year old understands the character better than you, the Comic Writer, someone somewhere fucked up.

Or if you don't want to even read that much, here. That pretty much summarizes DC's stupid.

No, not exactly.. it's the difference between shitting on your face, and shitting on your face while calling you hurtful names. Neither one is pleasant, though the second one hurts your feelings as well as pissing you off.

Oh dear, I keep getting calls to vote for my parents dog, Summer, on this silly online contest thing. I'm going to shamelessly self promote and say if you don't mind entering your email to vote then I love you more than 5 whole pancakes. Five!!! That is a lot of pancakes.

Even if you don't vote I still love you more than at least 1 pancake.

Now that I'm awake I must lurk the forums until the grasp of sleep takes hold.
