They look like they were designed for cell phones and use a 3.5mm TRRS connector to pass stereo audio and mic in through one connector. I'm not aware of any PCs that support that (though there's a few forum posts that say some Dells do, or did?). PC standard is two TRS connectors - one for headphone out, one for mic in. You'll need something like this to make it work.

I've heard of it. It's pretty much homeopathy with some fancy science-sounding language wrapped around it. Still bullshit, but it's impressively creative bullshit.

Thinking about the Google Glass project (link just in case) kind of scared me. I can totally see this going the same way of the phone - clumsy and unnatural at first, and then it gets accepted and you can't tell them apart from normal glasses at all. And then everyone starts wearing them. It reminded me that we're not at the pinnacle of our technology with these computers yet, and my descendants will have a lot to look forward to...

Given that they're heavily integrating Google+ and also showed features involving getting other people's locations... And an accurate gyroscope might fit... It doesn't look too far. In a wifi-connected city, they could also triangulate everyone's positions for good accuracy. Then it's a matter of facial recognition and matching them up with people in the area.

Not to sound like an old fogey or anything, but I can't imagine trying to have a conversation with someone and all of a sudden their eyes glaze over and they decide to check their email or their facebook or look at pictures while I'm trying to talk to them. A phone is bad enough. Plus, can you imagine people trying to drive with those? An update in the middle of your field of view and then right into the back of a car sitting at a red light. I'm not optimistic about this.

I don't like people expecting me to be reachable at any time. It's bad enough with cell phones. Maybe the reason I didn't pick up was that I wanted to be fucking left alone.

Arguably, this is better than cell phones. Cell phones make audible rings that annoy everyone. These things probably use much lower volumes and you could just take it off if you don't feel like interfacing with it.

Though yeah, I really don't like people trying to contact me endlessly as well.

Phones have silent running modes for a reason.

Even in silent mode, they tend to vibrate. I'm also hoping these glasses will detect when they're taken off so they instantly switch all my messenger statuses to "probably sleeping".

In Google's vision you wouldn't be driving a car anyway, but I think that one thing they are doing is to have a concentration mode anyway because situations requiring no distractions will exist in any case. The privacy concerns are the main thing I think, though everyone having a video recorder with them all the time can be empowering too...well, definitely in good and bad.

You should see the prosthetic glasses we were showing off at the Royal Society exhibition this summer. They were for people with very limited vision, and basically consisted of a crude, transparent LED display, and cameras which allowed the glasses to calculate depth and hopefully also be able to do things like tracking so you can follow a single person around. The idea is that you tell the glasses what you think the most important information is in your environment, and they only light that up. You could, say, track a single person while walking down the street, or navigate around an unfamiliar place if you set close objects to bright.
