So, the small (zero) followers of the life and times of Jumble may know I'm now based in Amman Jordan. Yesterday I bumped into my house manager carrying this out our block of flats, which he claimed to have dispatched in a downstairs loo. As a matter of interest, anyone know what it is (yes, I know it's a snake...)

This reminded me of a Fluid dynamics lecture involving a problem about a tap. I don't remember the exact details, but I think we needed to calculate the pressure at some particular point in the pipe at the precise moment the tap was closed. During the explanation the prof said something like "pressure waves travel at the speed of sound of course" and then casually continued with the explanation, which baffled me, becaue I didn't remember that being mentioned earlier and it didn't seem so obvious to me. But who cares, apparently that's something I need to learn, better remember it.
Then months later (probably while studying for an exam) the penny dropped all of a sudden:

Apparently it messes up your blood's ability to clot ... which ought to be non-lethal as long as it doesn't also tear out a significant chunk of you, but they still recommend professional medical assistance.

I tried to do a google image search, but holy fuck is google image search a fucking moron. Everything is "ten deadliest snakes" or tumblr pages with 5000 snakes. The internet is becoming so crowded with clickbait that search engines are going to become completely useless at anything except finding products. When I tried to describe the circular patches, mostly I got pictures of shoes.

Went with "Snakes in Jordan" without quotation marks in a normal Google search. Displayed six images at the top.

I mean, that's how warfarin works and we use that to kill rats.

My image search for snake identification in Jordan turned into "+snake +identification +Jordan -shoes -trainers -running" and still got loads of images of Nike Air ... flip-flops? Plimsoles? Outer socks? ... and lots of non-Middle-Eastern snakes. Some of them were cute, but that didn't help.

I wonder how much blood clotting generally goes on all the time in our bodies. Are we constantly bruising ourselves and healing?

Various figures (2, 2.5, 3, 15 or 17 million per second) are offered for red blood cell recycling rates. Some of those sites say they are born and die at equal rates. Born? Is that the correct technical term? I don't have the Google-fu to look up background blood clotting rates, though.

Blood cell recycling doesn't have anything to do with clotting. Damaged cells get detected and snapped up by Kupffer cells in the liver.

People just tend to leak small amounts in different places. The gut can bleed, especially if you have ulcers. Gums, noses and bumps on the head can get you into trouble. Haemophilia tends to affect the joints for some reason. Of course, a lot of pathological clotting also happens around the place, especially areas of turbulent flow and then you get clots you don't want.

Couldn't that be prevented by putting a grate over the drain hole? Not useful for the toilet, but do the snakes really crawl through water like that?

Figure 3.1a shows a stationary car sounding its horn. The expanding concentric circles represent the maxima of the sound wave; that is the peaks in the wave form you learned about in Parts 1 and 2. At these peaks the air molecules are more densely packed. The distance between each successive peak is one wavelength and because this distance does not change, the pitch (or the frequency) of the sound you hear is constant.

When the car is moving the wave pattern is different. The wave fronts are no longer concentric circles (Figure 3.1b). Directly in front of the car the peaks are closer together because the car is moving, giving the expanding wave front additional velocity in that direction. Behind the car, because the car is moving away from the wave front, they are further apart.

Alright, this time I'm a lot more confident that I really have caught them. Additional velocity? The wave fronts still move at the same speed but start further and further forwards, don't they?

I vaguely recall a Bill Nye the Science Guy episode that demonstrated the increase in velocity when someone throws a ball from a moving car, and then made a big deal about how mind-blowingly counterintuitive it is that the speed of light doesn't behave like that--i.e., the speed of light remains completely unaffected by the speed of a moving body. I assume (perhaps erroneously) that sound waves would behave more like the thrown ball than they would like light, and would thus receive a boost from the speed of the car. Disclaimer: I've never taken a physics class.

I've noticed the difference between how pets behave around people they've known since near-birth, and those they met later. There's often an instinctive trust between a grown pet and their humans if they were adopted at a few months old. After they reach adulthood, one has to work harder to get a pet to trust you. And they might never get to the same level as they had with their first humans.

Still, kitball is happy to see me when I get home, and I've figured out how to reach down for a pat without freaking her out, so it's all good.

... Except when she snags her overlong nails (my fault) on the blanket and attacks me when I try to untangle her. Like just now. Grargh.

So this is like a week late, but w.r.t Jumble's snake, to me the markings make it look more like a coin-marked snake, which is apparently non-venomous. Not that I'm suggesting you shouldn't give it a wide berth if you see a live one.

So this is a late response but the sound wave actually won't travel faster. This is because the sound wave travels at the speed of sound through the medium of the air; when the car drives through the air the air is still mostly still.

If you had a meteorite moving past us and the meteorite has its own atmosphere (at the same density, pressure, temperature as earth's), the sound waves would seem to move faster because they're still moving through the atmosphere at the speed of sound.

Ah. Thanks.

Your meteorite large enough to have its own Earth-like atmosphere, apparently moving through Earth's atmosphere close enough for me to hear it, terrifies me, so I'll just stop at your first paragraph.

Oh yeah, if it is actually close enough for you to hear it you'd have all sorts of complicated fluid dynamics confusing things. I was going more for a thing where somehow you (on earth) can sense the soundwaves through the meteorite's atmosphere (maybe some sort of doppler thing?)
