On the topic of what to call family members: My parents divorced a long time ago, so my mom and step-dad live together and my dad and step-mom live together. Can "parents" refer to one of those two groups, even though it's not really true? (e.g. "My parents will be home soon" as opposed to "My mom and step-dad will be home soon.")

I've recently (probably in the last 6 months or so) started referring to my mum and stepdad (they've been married for nearly 6 years) as 'parents' sometimes because it is quicker and easier, and all my friends know I mean my mum and stepdad anyway, as none of them are under the illusion my dad would come across the Atlantic to join my mum in driving me up to uni at the beginning of term (for example). I suspect this is mainly due to always being around people who automatically say 'parents' whether referring to their own or to my mum and stepdad, because all of my friends' parents are still together.

I've also heard people refer to legal guardians as parents - adoptive parents, uncle who took a kid in, that sort of thing. Usually because in most of the instances in which someone is discussing their parents, they're actually meaning "Authority Figure of whom's home I live in an rules I follow as per the standard Parent-Child relationship"

if you are comfortable using that term then i see no reason why you shouldn't, though, other set of parents may be offended. personally my father's wife was never anyone other than my father's wife

It is probably more useful as shorthand if you have a significantly stronger relationship with one set than the other. Me saying parents could only refer to my mum and dad or my mum and stepdad; it would never refer to my dad and the evil stepmother. Context generally makes it very clear who I mean by parents. I think ST pretty much summed up how 'parents' is generally used, though, in a not nearly as wordy and rather clearer way...

What makes it worse is that the comment wasn't even relevant. It was randomly attached to a Justin Bieber video and signed "Summer Glau".

I think I'm going to take out my stitches when I get home tonight and put in some crazy glue instead. I think the only pain left in the wound is from the stitches pulling on the surrounding tissue. The clinic doctor did a piss poor job of putting them in and some are way too tight while others are way too loose. Not having health insurance is an adventure.

It was a comment for a fallout video. But there's a serious Poe's Law-thing going on with youtube comment trolls. People pretending to be idiots do it so well they're indistinguishable from the real deal.

I've not had internet access for a few days and it made me realise how useful it really is. Isn't any coincidence that I've searched google ~20k times by now, which is roughly 11 a day, every day for the last 5 years. Somewhat coincidentally though, the first episode of southpark out of my collection I watched after losing the internet, was the one about losing the internet.

Also news just got released that my phones getting android 2.2 this weekend. I feel like a kid a Christmas. Well, except I just have to hit a few buttons and I get a digital present.

I got some Araldite and WD40, I've been going around epoxying things that aren't meant to move and WD40ing things that are. It feels really good, but I'm running out of things to grease/stick. So much stuff in need of fixing since moving here.

FT: They should sell straws that taper to a slightly thinner diameter at one end so creating a long connection of straws at any point you choose is significantly easier. Regular straws get that small gap from fold from trying to squeeze it in; the loss of efficiency is unacceptable.

Edit: FT: I find odd when people over-enthusiastically agree with your small-talk. It comes across as sarcastic even when they're not being sarcastic.

I've had some luck with straw connections, but I used sealant on the gaps. I wish someone would invent a straw that can be lengthened easily...
