I often find myself feeling like that - which is probably one of the reasons I like being at Oxford, because it makes me feel like I'm part of something that has existed long before I was born, and will continue to exist long into the future. I don't think we can do much about the cosmos ending, but what we can try and do is make sure that while we are here, we touch as many lives as possible so we are remembered when we're gone. My father's twitter account still has the tweets he sent online even though it's been over a year, and there are some videos of him on youtube and some articles about him around, articles he wrote on one of those amateur journalism websites around (also he was in the latest edition of either Lonely Planet or Rough Guide to the Caribbean, which I bought just because of that fact, though they may have released a new edition by now).

I still feel like I won't be remembered when I'm gone, but it helps to know that at least my family will remember me, and hopefully as I get older and begin to actually get more involved in work and stuff then hopefully more people will do so as well.

Thank you for the advice. I'm still a little antsy about my own mortality, but I guess I feel like I can deal with it a bit better now.

In any case...

Still, I'm getting the impression that the point of living is to make the best of it and not just spiral into dispair because the ending might not be so hot?

And to try and live in the here and now?

Did I get any of that right?

Well, that's how I cope with reality most of the time. Though sometimes I actually find that spiral of existentialist despair to be comforting by itself (sad is happy for deep people, after all).

It ultimately boils down to "do whatever works for you" - or, more preferably, "do whatever works for you, but don't be a knob".

That's it, bucko.

I also have some shit with the oscillating universe that probably lacks scientific backup, and then a pseudo-reincarnation theory: reset. you die and you're born, living your life exactly the same. who knows; the universe is pretty fuckin' subjective.
and even though that's drivel, it makes me want to live my life as happily as possible... cause yeah, because the ending will be oblivion--dreamless sleep if you will--why not be happy.

I dunno mang, the cosmos is gonna end, you're gonna die, every one you know and love will be dead in a century and there's abso-fuckin'-lutely nothing you can do about it. And I don't mean that in a James Bond villain way. I mean that there's NOTHING that will stop you from dying and the universe from eventually collapsing. So why even try? Why not live and let live? your atoms are gonna go into the earth or sky or sea and are gonna become a part of something else. We're drinking water that the dinosaurs pissed out, and a hundred million years from now, people will be drinking water that, at one point, exited our bladders too. Some dude dies in a corn field and his atoms go into corn and into us and into our shit and into our sewer systems--and it's fuckin' gross and nasty and weird and awesome and beautiful and disgusting but ZOOM OUT.

heat death of the universe, it collapses back into a singularity or whatever.
and the big bang happens again, iteration jibbeldy-trillion and six. 'nother universe. Still with your protons, neutrons, and electrons--or rather, atomic parts that once were part of you.

and really, humans, or cognizant, sapient, sentient beings or whatever, are what atoms WANNA BE, man. WAY more fun than being a fuckin' asteroid a couple parsecs away. and, given enough iterations and configurations, this EXACT CONVERSATION HAS HAPPENED. it's like a parallel universe but they're all drawn out in a line.

and YEAH entropy approaches 1 and eventually there will be a last big bang and collapse into foreverness--MAYBE. we don't fuckin' KNOW how physics work, really. We don't know if they could change if the universe was completely different, or whatever factors.

and that's fuckin' COOL AS SHIT. THE UNIVERSE IS COOL. DYING IS COOL, TOO. BUT DON'T KILL YOURSELF, AND DYING IS SAD AND AWFUL AND SHITTY, BUT there's nothing you can do so fuck it, get in the General Lee, and jump over some shit.

and I started five consecutive paragraphs with "and" but whatever, i'm kinda high.
uhhhh fuck.

That's probably why that post was harlaious where it could've been horrifying.

Yet at the same time it's kind of mind blowing. Like, people look to the supernatural for mind blowing things and ignore the all natural mind blowing things.

Maybe cause they are kind of scary and not everyone can handle that.

Then again, one of our elected goals as a species seems to be finding out how stuff works, then deciding we don't like it and either going into denial or trying to break the system as much as possible with variable results. Maybe we can become more than we are now?

Wait a minute I'm a wanna be creative writer why am I not using that as a part of...something...

Belgian news services are acting pretty stupid today.

Stupid #1: there's an article in the paper about the most powerful computer-and-internet companies. The article is titled "The most powerful nerds in the world". /facepalm.

Stupid #2: report on the radio about the number of burglaries dropping
...
They have however found a new method to get your bank card info.
*cue to some guy*
They stand behind you in the bank when you're typing in your code and they try seeing your code. Afterwards they try acquiring your card.

What was the old method??

I have come curiously close to the end, down
Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole,
Defeated, I concede and
Move closer
I may find comfort here
I may find peace within the emptiness
How pitiful

It's calling me...

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping
The moon tells me a secret - my confidant
As full and bright as I am
This light is not my own and
A million light reflections pass over me

Its source is bright and endless
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting

And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt
Don't wanna be down here feeding my narcissism.
I must crucify the ego before it's far too late
I pray the light lifts me out
Before I pine away.

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical,
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.
Just let the light touch you
And let the words spill through
And let them pass right through
Bringing out our hope and reason ...
before we pine away.

Fuck, what should we do. What should I do? Seconded.

Also lack of an afterlife isn't so bad. Things didn't feel terrible before you were born, right? Well, I'm guessing death is going to feel fairly similar.

Plus you get to find out what happens after you die. Unless it's total cessation of awareness (as would be my bet), in which case you won't care.

Personally, I plan to live forever and avoid the issue entirely. I'll live just long enough for someone to invent a technique to extend my life a little bit. Then I'll live long enough to benefit from the next advance, and then the next one and so on, until I can upload my mind into a giant death bot.

Keeping the universe alive will be a bit trickier, but I'm sure it can be done.

What the fuck, 4chan, what the fuck.

I joked about making a rpg system based on The Witcher's "people you bone get turned into cards" system. They took it seriously and started writing. Hence Orgomancer: The Dicking.

For example, I'll never be able to look at slime monsters the same way:
One factor which helps is that their entire body is easily penetrable, so if one can be kept in place it doesn't matter where they get dicked. Care must be taken in such actions due to the risk that a particular slime may be more interested in dissolving their opponents than fucking them, a mistake which has cost more than one dicker their namesake.
