Question For and About Girls (Yes, another)

Postby Kaletécho » Wed Jan 02, 2008 11:32 am UTC

Given that these two guys I will shortly be describing are equally nice and sweet and good-looking... which would you rather date?

1. A guy that is talented at many things. Most of the things he isn't particularly good at, he is at least decent. He is sometimes afraid of trying new things, but that doesn't hold him back as everyone is impressed by his many talents.

2. A guy who is very talented at an equally few things. He is sometimes decent at the things he isn't particularly good at, but you shouldn't put any money on it. He may get somewhat arrogant about the things he is good at, though. He is never afraid of trying new things, and even if people laugh he doesn't care. He is accustomed to making a fool out of himself and should make the best of it.

EDIT'd for pollingness

How is this about girls? It's about guys!

That was hard. Neither descriptions are things I would particularly look for in a man or be put off by. My choice was made mainly out of practicality - would he be able to do up the spare room or fix my hairdryer? Also a little bit of "would he be willing to come, I don't know, to an 80s rollerskating party with me and my friends?".

It's a little six of the one and half a dozen of the other to me.

Unless I am mistaken, the real question here is, "Do chicks dig talent?" Which is a pretty broad and obscure question.
I answered #2 but the bottom line is that I don't know these mystery men and am therefore inclined to like neither of them. You can't actually ask a fora full of girls a question and expect to get one defining answer which will give you insight into the minds of ladies. We're pretty specialized in this group.
I chose 2 because it seemed much more like the guy I am dating now than #1.

Neither. and not because I'm a lesbian. Rather, because both sound really really boring so far.

I get the impression that the 2nd person is more confident of himself. The first guy may be afraid to try new things but does them anyway, because he'll get good response. The seconds guy isn't afraid of trying new things and tries them, even though other people may laugh at him. I think that's a good quality. As a girlfriend you should probably poke him when he's arrogant though :P

I'm a guy, but for me that doesn't mean I can't form opinions on things like this :)

If I was a girl I would go with number one. The guy that can fix my computer and the water heater is much better, IMO, than the guy that can fix one or the other much better. Do you know what I mean?

By the way, the fact that I'm guy number one did not affect my logic at all.

The one she's sexually attracted to that has a personality that, in her opinion, meshes well with her own.

This sounds like one of those bad teen movie things, where at some point the hero and the protagonist stand up and yell "Which is it, Sheela? You have to pick one of us!" being completely ignorant of the fact that there's billions of guys out there... nevermind that Sheela might dig chicks more than dudes...

The REAL question is, would you rather have a guy who is spectacular at Guitar Hero 3, I mean like, Fire and Flames expert >90%, but unwilling to try Rock Band?

or a guy who is middling at everything but more then willing to make a fool of himself singing "Run to the Hills"?

I think we all (guys and girls) know the answer to this one.

But guy#2's intermittent arrogance puts a lot of people off. I'm not sure if I'm #1 or #2, probably a mix (I'm not really an expert at anything, but like to try everything), and don't know which I'd prefer (if I was female, I'd pick myself - yeah, I'm not perfect, but I know what I like and get on well with me).

I don't see how either are attractive, and I even switched all the male pronouns to female ones to think about it really hard. They seem disingenuous and painfully meek. I mean, one won't try new things and one hides behind a veneer of fake confidence? Count me out! "Equally nice?" What do you mean by nice? Doormat nice? 'I do nice things because it garners me attention and moral high ground' nice?

This seems suspiciously like you're trying to boost your own ego by hoping against hope that, as you and your friend fight for the same girl (or...something), that you come out on top because of some magically superior trait. Maybe it's not you, but the poll makes no sense. We don't know the backgrounds/homelife of each guy, we don't know their interests or their general level of pessimism. If she doesn't like one or both of you (assuming you are guy 1 or 2 and that there is a girl involved), she doesn't. No saying "Oh, well this guy's a catch, he's so nice and smart and blah blah blah" will change that maybe you're just not her type (or he is yours).

To add to Khonsu's post... girls aren't rational. There could be every reason in the world for them to pick one guy over the other, and yet a Magic 8 Ball would have more success predicting the outcome than any of us would. This fact is both intriguing and frustrating, but that doesn't make it not true.

LOL "God?" "YES, MY CHILD?" "I would like to file a bug report..."

Date whichever gives you more chocolate!

er... what?

I actually don't really like the way you've described either of them, or the way you're asking, as if, like @trophy said, people make rational decisions, ever.

Question: are you one of the guys? Or a girl? Or another guy?

Personally I voted for # 2, but don't prefer either.

That's going to be impossible to say without knowing everything else about a person.

Seriously.. the traits listed above are about as describing of a person as knowing that said person is left handed and has red hair. Yes, they're pretty obvious traits, but especially taken on their own, they're meaningless when you're discussing a whole person.

Your question is vague and confusing, that has been established. I am, however, going to tell you how I interpreted your questions, and I will try to answer them. I'd consider and edit if you want better answers, though.

1. Okay...girls like guys with talents, I suppose. "Girls only want boyfriends who have great skillz." Personally, it would bother me if a guy wasn't willing to try new things. But you said he is "sometimes afraid." You did NOT say he is unwilling.

2. The first two sentences confused the heck out of me. I'm assuming you mean he's good at a few things, okay at a few things, and pretty sucky at everything else. That's fine, that's normal. I think arrogant may have been a poor choice of wording. Not many people are attracted to arrogant. Being confident in what skills you do have, however, is very attractive. It's good to try new things, and it's great that he has enough confidence to laugh at himself. BUT "he is accustomed to making a fool of himself" makes him sound like, well, a fool. Handling mistakes gracefully and with good humor is wonderful. Constant use of self-deprecating "humor" is not, and actually masks several emotional problems.

I would say that even assuming everything's the same, as a previous poster said, we don't really know enough to make a judgement.

One of the things I will say, however, is that arrogance is very unattractive. My friend had a boyfriend who I thought was interesting, but drove me completely up the wall because he acted like he knew absolutely everything about everything, and especially about computers, all the time. He was okay, but the arrogance just overrode almost all of that in my mind.

So, yeah, protip: be confident, as another previous poster said, but not arrogant, and you'll go far.
There's a method to my madness. Somewhere. Don't worry, I'll find it!

Maybe one of those three-paneled presentation boards?
