Theories of Speed.

Postby James » Fri Apr 28, 2006 11:53 am UTC

Either SMB2 related or not.

Any progress on this or no? It seems that there is such an angle that you can climb and gain altitude without losing much of your initial speed, but then either the thigh turns I make on the cross makes me lose it, or I'm going too fast to land where I want.

Thoughts?

There is certain mini-game in Super Monkey Ball 2. It involves gaining speed by running down a ramp, taking off, and gliding to a landing for some ammount of points. Shoofle, xkcd and I were developing theories of speed which would allow you to travel farther, get more points, etc.

Oh yeah, I haven't gotten around to working more on it. Maybe I will today. I think it's the turns that lose you speed on the cross level. It would be nice to have more fine control, but I guess that's part of the challenge of the game. I think it's helpful, though, to start out as high as possible, because by no means do you get back anywhere near the same amount of speed by diving after climbing. It's one of the things that really bothered me about Monkey Target.

I also thought you were talking about Super Mario Brothers. Silly me.

I had a book at one point that documented the running speed and jumping ability in a standard unit of length for all of the characters in Super Mario Brothers 2, and for Mario in all of his suits and various items and helpers in all of the 2D scrolling Super Mario games. I'll see if I can dig that out.

I've never played Super Monkey Ball. What am I missing?

Monkeys in balls. It's actually cooler than it sounds.
