Were you a lurker?

Postby El Senor Fruit Swing » Tue Feb 19, 2008 2:01 pm UTC

So how many of us came right to forums and skipped the lurk stage?
Or did we all stalk the forums like a hungry RAPTOR!!!!!!

Edited to give thread an actual title and to fix the first poll option. Remember, Pac-man wants to eat the bigger number!

Around 4 weeks, I'd say. I'm still not posting very often, though.

Raptor style here. I usually jump straight in when it comes to fora.

Yeah, me too.

Also, can anyone change the first option? It doesn't really make much sense, considering the rest of the poll choices.

I stalked for about 20 minutes before deciding on where to post first... There are a lot of threads out there!
I'm sorry, but the witty signature you were expecting is currently unavailable. A team of highly trained squirrels are currently attempting to develop one. The management apologise for any inconvinience caused.

About three months, give or take.

I like to feel out a forum before I join.

I didn't "lurk" as such, but when I first joined I made a handful of posts, then none at all for a couple of weeks. I can't remember why this was, but I have a feeling I didn't visit the forums at all during that time.

On a side note, I think it would be quite interesting to be able to see a time series for members' postcounts, in the vein of Wikipedia's editcounters.

I forgot to activate my account, so I guess that would be lurking. But I don't think I visited here much in that time, or I'd've noticed sooner.

I post if I actually have a thought that hasn't been posted yet, something that actually adds to the thread. I hate it when people post nothing but "lol".

About the time I discovered the fora I had some question about one of the comics, so I had to join to ask in it's thread.

Moo is a right little attention whore. As soon as I saw a discussion on which I had an opinion, I felt the need to share it with the world. So pretty much straight away.

This message is intended with good intentions, and ment to be read while listening to "Happy Together" by The Turtles

Spoiler:
You know, most people assume I'm a dim witted moron who has nothing smart to say until they post and I respond then they get angry at my lack of logic. And retort with bitter remark and I win because I kept my cool:-P. In conclusion, I am a dim witted moron who very rarely has purposeful well thought out input. But when I do, it will save YOUR life.

p.s. I need punctuation pie, and lots of it.

I lurked for a month or two before posting. I don't like jumping into a thread unless I can deliver insight, wit, and three or four paragraphs of raw exposition that make me the focus of attention. I'm slowly learning to get over myself. :)

I started visiting to get explanations of comics I didn't quite get. I had been away from any message board for years, but you people turned out to be good people and not mindnumbing or anything, so I joined!
I have nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.
And some old pictures.

I'm just going to say that there are benefits to posting more.

Hidden sections become unlocked, and you get prizes in the mail.

At 500 posts, the "Welcome Aboard" forum becomes visible. At 1000, there's the "Getting to know you via your address" forum and you get signed up for the Jelly of the Month club, for free.. 1500 gets the "Eat more cake, seriously" forum, membership to the Pie of the Week club at 2000 posts, followed by the "How much weight are you gaining?" forum at 2500, then the "Seriously, have another slice of pie" forum at 4000.

Rumor has it, at 6000 posts, Belial personally drives to your house to give you a Surprise! But only if you switch all your round door handles for the bar kind that you can just kinda push down a little and pop the door open.

...

It's odd, though.. after someone gets 6000 posts, you never hear from them again.... hmmm.... Oh, well, since Belial is human, the two couldn't possibly be related.

I burrowed under the ground and attacked with my subterranean spines, but it lasted less than a week.
So, I got tired of the fact that the appearance of my band name in my signature made my posts on this forum the dominant result when googling for my music. Anyway, if you think I might happen to be a good musician, you can test this theory here.

I joined pretty early on, but I lurk all the time. How much I post depends on my mood. Like now, I don't really care that I have nothing at all today and will happily ramble on about nothing in particular, but usually I'm like "bah! nobody will care" and don't bother.

I still lurk for the most part. Mainly because if someone else has already answered a topic, I don't feel the need to restate what they said most of the time.
Edit: Obligatory 300 joke.
