Happy Pi day!!

Postby Quadropus » Thu Mar 13, 2008 4:10 pm UTC

Who else will be "celebrating" the wonderful day of Pi tomorrow?

I know I will be, but only at 1:59:26

Any pi/pie related plans?

Don't forget to celebrate Einstein's birthday.

And steak and a blowjob day.

Steak, pie and Einstein, is there anything else a girl could need?

I don't think many of my co-workers will be aware of the festival, but I whole-heartedly plan on celebrating Pi Day to a reasonable level. This will involve the consumption of at least one pie, or maybe a ham and pineapple pizza, then probably setting my desktop to an image of pi. I don't have any Einstein/Maths-related T-shirts to wear.

Everyone knows the "real" pi moment will be at 9:26:54 am 7 years from tomorrow.

I thought the pi moment would be 15:9:26.53

(or .54 if you're queasy about truncating)

I guess you have to insert a 0 for it to make sense. But isn't it the same with 1:59:26.53? There should be a zero at the beginning.

I occasionally submit to the idiotic American date system in order to celebrate excellent holidays like Pi Day.

Tomorrow is March 14. Therefore it is 3/14. You're just angry that your date system doesn't give you a Pi Day.

...bets on tomorrow's comic being pi-themed?

Anyway, I won't be doing much to celebrate - mostly just telling people that it's world pi day, and clarifying that it's not that kind of pie, sorry.
Also, pi approximation day on 22/7 is a much better one for those who use a sensible dd/mm dating system.

Yay, I know more digits of pi than LE4d! (Unless I have managed to remain ignorant of the fact that "most math nerds" actually know pi to more than 20 times the official world record.) Actually I've known 200 digits for a while now, but never updated my post.

Edited to avoid ambiguity, and because I've just got the joke in LE4d's avatar. I shock and appall myself.

No. It's the 14th of March of the 2008th year. Missing out the "of" and swapping numbers around is just lazy.

I don't think colonials who can't even spell "colour" correctly or know that a billion is actually a million million should be allowed to rewrite the date system. It can only end in confusion on dates with day numbers 12 or less. :P

A billion always used to be 10^12. Then Americans got hold of it and decided that was too big a number to comprehend so they changed it to 10^9. Unfortunately, it stuck.

Edit: Actually I think it was because 10^9 is used fairly often and "billion" is quicker to say than "thousand million". (Even if it IS wrong) :P

Edit2: Don't you think it's so much more elegant to have billion = million million (bi-million as-it were), trillion = million million million (tri-million) and so on and so forth?

What are the prefixes prefixing in bi- and tri-llion?
A billion is two whats? I always thought of it as two "sets of 000" following 1000,
and a trillion is three "sets of 000" following 1000.
