I was sitting in calculus when another teacher (Mr. Chelcun) ran in and told us a plane had just flown into the World Trade Center. TVs were quickly procured, and I watched that pretty much throughout my classes that day.

God, I was in sixth grade, and I hadn't even gotten to school yet. My sister came into my room "wake up! wake up! A plane hit the World Trade Center!" I didn't even know what that was. And I can remember that on the twelfth, every section of the newspaper was entirely about the attack: front, local, business, entertainment.

But I came here to confess my sins.

Confession: Sometimes, I want to say, "Wait, wait! I'm only seventeen years old! I don't know everything I need to know. I can't handle this argument all by myself. Won't someone please come and take over for me?"

I think we already have a thread for "where were you..." but I was in 10th grade at the time. I found out when I got home that evening. I guess the administration either was unaware or didn't want to let us know about it.

I didn't mean to start this; it's out of my hands now.

It's always interesting to go back after a long conversation (or a few pages of thread) and review how it was that you reached the present topic at hand.

Flying Betty wrote:In America they made such a huge fuss about 9-11 that it's probably firmly engraved on everyone's brain. And it did change things around here enough that it marks a shift in eras. It probably helps that that happened my first semester of college (physics lecture, and then we all ran down the the student union to watch the news) so I was off on my own for the first time when all this stuff was going on.

So I'm 24, 25 in May, and look about 19. It doesn't really bother me but it's more irritating now that I'm out of school. I can even pull off 17 if I'm wearing the right clothes. People just automatically assume I'm in college. When I meet people out swing dancing, if they feel like chatting the first thing they ask is "College X or College Y?" No, dammit! It's even better if they then ask if I'm still in high school. And then sometimes there's the slightly patronizing "Oh, but you'll be so glad of it when you're older!" If I'm lucky that'll kick in by the time I hit 30. Maybe not. My sister's pushing 30 and she looks about 19 too. My dad was still getting proofed in the days of the 18 year old drinking age when he was 30. When do I get to be smug about looking young instead of slightly irritated?

Damn, *third* grade!? Let me get my ugly red hat and purple shirt and go trip people with my cane!

Yeah, when I visited my sister (who is younger than me by 3.5 years) during her freshman year of college, she told her friends I was a senior and they wanted to know what college I was going to go to next year. I just got my driver's license and the guy had to double-check that I was old enough to be an organ donor without parental permission (I'm 23). I blame my dad.

I think part of the reason 9/11 marked such a major shift in tone was that it came near the beginning of Bush's presidency, so it coincided with the whole 8 years of Democratic rule shifting to 8 years of Republican rule, so all the domestic policy changes were made at about the same time as the foreign policy changes and made a fairly neat dividing line between eras.

I am currently downloading MiKTeX so I can compile some LaTeX documents for projects due tomorrow later today. At least I can work on writing them while waiting for the download to finish, but I'm not. I'm in here making confessions instead. And fwiw, my age is somewhere between the ages of Belial and Flying Betty. I'm waiting patiently (so far) for my 25th birthday because my automobile insurance should be much less expensive then.

Totally unrelated confessions: I think I've had more tea to drink in the past couple of hours than I've had liquid of any kind to drink in the previous two days. No matter how you slice it, that can't be good. And I think this is the first post that I've used the "confession(s): <confession(s)>" format.

The Chernobyl disaster was in late April of '86. I was born in Germany in July of '86. My parents said one of the local military commissaries closed and gave huge discounts on beef products shortly after.

9/11 I was a freshman, and since I was EST it happened in ... hmm ... 2nd period I think. Our teacher just turned on the T.V and we watched it all happen. When I finally got home neither of my parents weren't home since they worked on the Air Force Base and were considered essential personnel. My mother didn't get home till about midnight, and my father ended up on base for about 48 hours straight. To top it off they scrambled jets out to Wright Patt AFB at supersonic speeds so while my younger siblings and I were watching T.V all we hear is an incredible boom sound coming from the base our parents were at. Scary. As. Shit.

For all the rest of the disasters mentioned I was either not yet born, or incredibly young.

I was born in Germany in July of '86. My parents said one of the local military commissaries closed and gave huge discounts on beef products shortly after.

I was born in Germany in '87 and the gov't won't let me give blood because of a Mad Cow thing that happened around that time, so the beef could be because of that ...

I've been told that when Challenger exploded in Jan '86 I was in a box in front of the tv since my mother had a broken leg and could not really watch me that well. I was just about 1 then (being born March '85).
So I would imagine Chernobyl, being a few months after Challenger, that I would have been upgraded to playpen? or possibly mother's lap. ^^;

With 9/11, I was home alone wondering wtf the radio folks were going on about. I caught the news a few minutes before heading to school and wondered wtf was going on on the news too. Not much happened in class, we got to cut class to find tv's and watch the news. What sucked is that I was alone since my parents had taken off on a trip to the US, and were crossing the border on the day of 9/11 (driving from my relatives in Vancouver to Seattle to visit my relatives in Washington there). My parents also never bothered to get passports since they were not necessary then and ultimately found that the border guards did not want to let them leave the US when they returned. Over the course of being home alone when my parents were gone on that trip I also managed to cure myself of ever getting drunk again, but that's a different story.

I hate this place. Everybody is the same. Everybody's personality is smooth on the outside and tumultuous on the inside. The uglyness on the inside fuels alcoholism on the outside. Nineteen year olds rolling around in big ass cars with the brothers in tow. Giggling girls in slutty clothes who actually hate each other but live such false lives that they live together by choice.

I hate this place, it isn't real. It's so fake I don't know what is real anymore. I've got to get out.

I hate this place, it isn't real. It's so fake I don't know what is real anymore. I've got to get out.

And go where?

We don't have an xkcd floating armada yet. Or an xkcd commune. Um. Um! You can... you can run away on the inside! And you can stay in my heart. *nods* I promise it's happy and safe. And you can heal there! And none of the darkness will touch you. Because I am like an umbrella! For the bad things.

:(

Feel better, okay? Have you tried going outside at three in the morning on a warm summer night and just listening to the quiet? That makes me feel better sometimes... It's nice when there's a full moon, because you can see things! But if you decide to walk on the empty roads, you should take some water to drink. (You can hear cars coming from *ages* away!)

*virtual snuggle*
I wrote it in a style I fondly refer to as "unabashedly fancy" - i.e., "Fuck Zen minimalism, I'm gonna use all of my favorite words and stack loads of complex syntax n' modifying phrases'n'clauses in this motherfucker, goddamn."

Your "Kid Story" avatar pretty much gives it away. And then, when you get out? "Welcome, to The Desert of The Real" The fake stuff is more real, because the real stuff has been eroded away. This is where we live.

Aw crap, what f_s said was better. How did you do that?

Sucks, don't it.

Wow. That puts things in a whole new prespective for me.

...I was born in 1991, and my parents never gave me beef, and I didn't find out why until about 2003. I'd be fine with this, if my asshat of a younger brother didn't decide that that meant he was 'allergic' to beef and that if he ate it he would start to throw up - he now tells everyone that if he eats the stuff he gets a sore stomach and doesn't feel well for ages.
He's fourteen.

Confession: I've just noticed that we're approaching 500 pages, and really want to sit and press F5 in wait for that fateful page...
