What is your phobia?

Postby GCM » Sun Apr 13, 2008 3:12 pm UTC

Other interesting ones include Gephyrophobia (fear of bridges), Anglophobia (fear of British people),Erythrophobia (pathological blushing), Dentophobia (dentists), and Gymnophobia (naked people).

I've been thinking about this for maybe half an hour. I'm afraid of heights, but not excessively so. More of falling. Or dropping things that I'm holding over the edge. It's not a very deep fear, but I have others... Also, it's funny how I got the urge to jump over a 3-storey balcony a few times when I was up there (I think it might be Portal influence. Dammit heel springs!)

I tried once to have this discussion with schoolmates, but one turned away and the others followed suit for some reason. Anyways... choose any that apply. The list would be more comprehensive, but I'm trying to be a bit more representative. I mean, I'd like to get to know someone who has Osmophobia (fear of smells), but these don't seem to come around too often.

None of those, but being a shy person, I guess Xenophobia would be closest. I'm not AFRAID of strangers though.

I suffer from agateophobia (fear of insanity) and apeirophobia (fear of infinity)... I'm also afraid of outdoors/nature (walking through the woods/camping/hiking is not my thing, especially at night). I've gone hiking a few times and its not so bad around fall/winter. I'm really just afraid of bugs and wild animals.

i have very strange, specific fears. I'm not afraid of ALL dogs, but i'm afraid that some unattended dog will come out of nowhere in the middle of the night (like while i'm walking to my car) and kill me. I'm not afraid of the dark, i'm afraid of dark beyond light. i'm ok with spiders as long as i dont find them ON ME unexpectedly or while i'm driving.

Spiders. Ick. DESTROY THEM ALL.

Also, I have a fear of grounds. Not of heights. Anyone who reads Discworld should understand what I'm talking about.

I have a fear of mugging. But I'm sure that's perfectly rational. I mean, who likes getting mugged?

Any other fears...?

Anyway, I can't think of anything offhand I am really afraid of, among the common phobias. It isn't really a fear, but needles puncturing the skin creeps me out (I get chills down my spine and everything).

Meh, I used to have arachnophobia, then I realised I was hundreds of times bigger than them, and no spiders in the UK are poisonous (of course, if they were poisonous, my fear wouldn't be irrational now would it  )

Great now i have that fear in my head. I'm going to be on the highway in a really tense situation that demands my full attention, and i'm going see a spider crawling on me, but there will be nothing i can do.

I guess my only fear is groups of strangers. Particularly when i'm alone. If the number of people i don't know in a group out numbers the people i do know i start to get a bit nervous. But this is only for my peers, strangers younger or older then me dont bother me at all. Also this fear doesn't apply if the whole group is doing something that i know how to do (ex i wouldn't mind playing touch football with lots of people i didn't know). I guess it also doesn't apply on the internet, because here i am talking with all you strangers.

You people need to fear snakes more. They're like the stealth-assassins of the reptile world...when all the world leaders die of snakebite, raptors are a few days behind them. Maybe only hours.

There are no snakes in New Zealand. I've only ever seen a snake once, in Australia, and i'm pretty certain it wasn't poisonous. They're not scary.

Isn't xenophobia a fear of outsiders? like aliens?

I checked it anyways, since w're following your definintion
Also, auto-, ligyro-(isn't everyone at least startled by noises? apparently not people here), nycto-...

I'm also a little afraid of closed spaces, but I guess that's only panic that sets in when I can't really move

Edit: I was also freaked out by a snake the only memorable time I saw one. But then again, I think it was cause I stepped on it and was scared of the squishy. It was okay afterwards tho

1. Height, and I have realized this when I went to the grand canyon and freaked out, as well as smaller falls.

2. Darkness, and I realized that when I was going though my house and turning on all of the lights to keep me in the light.

I checked autophobia. Ones that aren't on the list that I have to some degree or another:
Anatidaephobia - Fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you (thank you Gary Larson)
Agateophobia - Fear of insanity... cause I don't know the one that is the fear of already being insane
Anuptaphobia - Fear of staying single
Athazagoraphobia - Fear of being forgotton or ignored or forgetting

Heights and snakes. There's no fear of snakes so I put fear of spiders. I usually don't mind bugs too much, unless they start crawling on me, in which case I'd go "eww, get off me" and shake the appropriate appendage until they get off.

'tain't true, dear.

"Sesquipedaliaphobia" would make sense. A "sesquipedalianism" is a long word, literally one that is "six feet" long.

However, a "Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia" would be more like a fear of six-foot river horse monsters. It was never a real word, and was started as a prank by some loser who likes making up nonsensical words. This word has become pretty popular among trivia junkies in spite of the fact that it doesn't really mean anything -- or at least not what they think it means.

By-the-by, my personal fear is panphobia -- a fear of everything.

Everything in Australia is poisonous, everything. Even our trees (last line in first section) are poisonous!

I'm have a somewhat rational fear of heights. If it requires safety harnesses and stuff, I'm uncomfortable because it is obviously unsafe. The irrationality begins because in every case that I've been afraid, after doing it once it became one of the best experiences of my life.

I thought I saw someone post this but my fear of heights is more of a Terry Pratchett kind of fear, say Barophobia.

I have to admit to having a small level of xenophobia which I HATE every time that it appears and feel really guilty about afterwards.

Agateophobia? Easy cure: believe you're insane. Then all you have to suffer is: logikiophobia!

From the Phobia List my favourites are:
  • Anemophobia (Fear of Air) - what?!
  • Staurophobia (Fear of Crosses/Crucifix) - hehe vampires' fears
  • Parthenophobia (Fear of Girls, Young or Virgin) - that must suck
  • Hellenologophobia (Fear of Scientific Terminology, etc) - not on this forum, surely?

That list is too much fun!

I'm surprised that agoraphobia didn't make the list. It's one of the most common. 5% of people at any time have it. In addition, anyone who has a panic disorder (and to a lesser extent OCD) has a very good chance of developing it.
