Mum, here are some points to keep in mind when asking me to do some work on the house:

1. I prefer to find the screwdrivers/drill bits in the toolbox where I left them, not scattered between several suitcases in the attic, mixed up with old knitting needles, mouldering teddy bears and - for some reason - dozens of tiny pairs of corduroy dungarees. While we're at it, sorting the few tools that you decide to leave in the land of the living by the colour of their handles doesn't help either.

2. If you already have moved the tools, don't pretend you haven't. Just tell me where you put them - it's quicker.

3. Especially don't try to tidy the tools up while I'm in the middle of using them. I've put the screwdriver down while I use the drill - that's not your cue to snatch it up and throw it into your long-term-crap-storage.

4. Yes, I realise that every male in my family from my Grandad onward has "accused you of hiding their tools". This is not some sort of genetic flaw, it's because for the last 30 years you've been compulsively hiding our tools.

5. Seriously, leave the fucking tools where they are.

I realise this is technically just one point, but it's important.

This (for want of a better word) 'article' has really enraged me. For one, I dislike my chosen religion being called "any old set of beliefs". For two, I dislike that this woman has got it into her head that a person's religion makes any damn difference about how they do a job. For three, I dislike when people go off on one about Paganism in ways they would never dare do about other religions like Islam or Sikhism for fear of being called racist; just because you've chosen a Religion with only about 0.1% following in the UK does not mean that it's not a valid belief system that is worthy of respect. I don't go on about how Christians shouldn't be PCs and I don't much care. They're Pagan, they're Proud, and they shouldn't have to get your shit.

This article is retarded [edit: thanks to Moo for pointing out the unfortunate irony in that statement]. They're called vacation days, folks -- everyone gets them, who the hell cares what they do with them? Ugh. I hate people sometimes.

When people start making covers and copies of your favourite songs and other people think it's the original.
When you encounter people who don't know that there existed consoles before nintendo.
When you are bothered by too loud noises.
When people complain about graphics in computergames.
When people complain about the weather or things being too far away.
When people use new slang that you haven't heard before.
When people complain about loading times.
And so on...
Preferably you throw in some rants about how it was much worse when you were young while you at the same time say something about "the good old days".

Why are people such assholes? Especially my family!

When I was 300 lbs they complained that I need to lose weight, now that I'm 180 lbs and living better and using some supplements (multivitamin, fish oils, flax seed oil, Vit C, B12 complex, glucosamine and condrotin, green tea) they bitch at me about being too skinny and unhealthy and taking too many pills. For fuck's sake, pick one! Either you want me to be extremely obese, hooked on drugs and alcohol and completely lazy or you want me to be healthy and have 3 hobbies; working out, school, and my girlfriend.

I visited my parents this past weekend and heard about being too skinny and sickly all weekend. It culminated at dinner on sunday when I didnt want to eat the mashed potatoes that were slathered in butter and grease and who knows what else. They made fun of me and said that I had, "a supplement for vegetables" I got so pissed I dropped my fork, grabbed my shit and left. Ill come back in a few months, maybe their attitudes will change by then.

On some info about a supervised-weekend-away-with-other-teenagers type event my sister is going on: "Bring some smart clothes for a party on the last night, boys should wear a tie, girls should wear a skirt."

It is annoying that boys must wear a tie, but I can see why that was put in as event dress codes are usually described as "black tie", "white tie", etc and as a girl I decide how smart to go based on what the boys are going to be wearing. I now know that I should make an effort, but not go over the top.

But girls MUST wear a skirt? This makes me angry. It is in Scotland, so I suspect boys can wear a kilt or trousers, but girls apparantly can't be smart unless they are in a skirt. I would be put off going, I hate wearing skirts.

I think that I am probably overreacting, and am concerned about my double standards that it is ok to dictate what the boys should wear but not the girls. "I would be put off going, I hate wearing ties." is a perfectly sensible reason too.

Anyway, rage.

I agree. It would be better to set a tone of clothes instead of an article of clothing.
"Formal wear" "Semi-formal wear" "casual" "business casual" etc.

Though, I don't mind the word blacktie, because while it refers to an article of clothing, it doesn't actually refer to just wearing a black tie.

I suppose they have removed the panicky "but what does business-casual actually mean?" from the process, which would make my life easier!

Black tie alway conjures up the guy in a bowtie with white shirt, jacket, black trousers, nice shoes so I suppose in my head it is specifying what guys should wear and then girls fit in with that (to a greater or lesser extent, girls can get away with a lot more than guys at smart events!). Funny that.

I might email them, but I should wait until my calm, rational self has come back so I make sense.

Not exactly a meaningful rant, but:

I'm so fucking tired of all this achievement/trophy bullshit on the Xbox 360 and PS3. I guess some people out there put some amount of stock into that crap, but I honestly couldn't care less. Especially when the only reward you get for some action is another achievement/trophy. If I spend a fair amount of time trying to accomplish something in a game, I want that to mean something. IN THE DAMN GAME. I don't want to spend a couple hours doing something just for the game to go "Yay, you got another achievement!" Uh, okay, how about a cool new item or spell or something? That would actually be useful and a lot more meaningful. This is especially true on optional things in a game. It's not as big a deal for the main part of the game, but when all I get for accomplishing some optional side quest is some stupid achievement? Fuck you game programmers. Fuck you hard.

Today has been a really quiet day in my hospital department. We've only had five patients to do. Now, you would think that when there are five patients and six staff, that would mean everyone would get a decent lunch break, wouldn't you? No, that would be far too much like actually having a clue. Instead, let's make the guy on the later shift (me) work while everyone else wanders off to have a break or do something in another bit of the department. Then when I finally get to have a break, haul me out of the break room after 20 minutes to do some dumbass training for two and a half hours. GRAAAAGH!
Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

Possibly my proudest moment on the fora.

Sigh...

My relations with my best friend ex-best friend have deteriorated so much that I almost want to tear up*. I knew that she was still pissed with me, but I didn't think that she'd take it this far. Maybe I'm just being overly-emotional, but when someone's first reaction at learning that I'm someplace is eww... spank him**, I can't really say that that makes me feel good about myself.

Also, I know that I shouldn't really be bothered much by this, but I am. After I got off the bus and I was waiting for my friend to get off, some guy got out, turned to me, said, "You know what? I think you're gay," and then turned away. What he said doesn't bother me as much*** as what the underlying tone I got from it does. You're strange. Awkward. I don't like you. I haven't even said two words to the guy. Hell, I didn't even know he existed until an hour and a half ago. Maybe I'm just being too sensitive today //_w

*I don't cry easily. Even getting me to tear up is an big achievement in itself.
**It's bad that one of the things that came to my mind when I thought back on that was What is this, a porno shoot?
***I get the whole mistaken sexual-orientation-shtick way too often to care anymore. That, and the words are not really insulting in the least. It's the message you put behind them that counts, just like anything else.
Significantly less weird than I used to be. Still pretty weird.

No, it's ridiculously straightforward.

Will you be turning or changing lanes soon?
If yes, use your turn signal.
If no, do not use your turn signal, and (this is, I think, where most people fail) also do not turn or change lanes.

In your case, put your goddam turn signal on before the second exit. If you don't turn there, at least the people behind you know one of two things:

(1) you're going to turn soon
(2) you're a blithering idiot

In either case, they know to be extra careful around you.

I know, right? Your fuck signal has two settings - Stay Out or C'Mon In And Join The Party! Not setting it just leads to awkward disrobing followed by "Wait, I thought you were leaving" "I thought you were inviting me" "I thought you'd locked the door" conversations, and no one wants that.

People who realize some ancient philosophical argument and then smugly repeat like they think they're the first people on the planet to realize it. "Oh me yarm! You can't prove that other people exist!" "All beliefs are based on unprovable assumptions!"

Also, grade school history classes. I was taught weird shit - I remember being taught that Christopher Columbus was the first to prove that the Earth is round....yeah....

Anyways, my rant. Now, there will not be any abortion debates, I'm just very mad about this.
I was talking to my friend after having a bizare dream about the pregnancies at our school and she tells me the girl from my homeroom was forced to have an abortion by her dad. No, she and the father are really not ready for a baby, but I find it so wrong that her father forced her to get on or that he would kick her out of the house. They were already thinking of names for the baby for Pete's sake! And she had already come out to the school too. I am just enraged that she didn't have a choice, it's wrong! Gaaaah! I mean, seriously! She had things [planned with that baby! I can't think straight since I'm so mad.

Yeah, in general I think parents have way too much power over their children. I'm not sure what the ideal alternative is, but right now parents can make way too many choices for their children against their extreme protests.

Yes, agreed, no debate. The whole point of the pro-choice stance is that people...have choices.

If the girl was willing to take on the responsibility of a child - reconfiguring her schedule, paying for some childcare stuff, working out systems between her partner and parents for taking care of the baby, etc. - then absolutely, she should not have been forced to abort. At the very least, she should've been able to choose adoption over abortion.

Rant: Cartoon Network is trying to put a really positive spin on the fact that they play a ton of shows that have zero to do with Cartoons.

Yeah...the only remotely related situation I see as at all justified is if the parents say that they will not help raise their child's child.

Roundabout with 6 exits, you want to take the second or 4th exit. Do you signal or not?

See, it's not so straightforward is it.

Thing is, if you signal too early, people think you're going to exit on the next turn. If you don't, people think you're going to go straight ahead. There is no contingency for the second exit. Personally, I only start signalling once I've passed the first exit and hope that's good enough.

Oh, and if you've never driven before, you might not realise it. It is much easier than you think to forget to signal. Or the signal might auto-cancel without you realising it. Or it might NOT auto-cancel in which case, you end up signalling when you're not supposed to. For this reason, I NEVER trust the turn signals of any other driver. In fact, I find it safer to just ignore signals altogether and look at whatever manoeuvre the car happens to be doing at the time.

See, the signal says one of two things.
1. I will be turning.
2. I am an idiot bewildered that my car is making a clicking noise at me.

Either way, other drivers know to keep an eye on the signaling car.

A non-signaling turn is like watching a nice movie where two people are going out for a date and they have a nice picnic and are enjoying pleasant conversation until the sniper blows one of their heads off. At best, it's lame and predictable and you see it coming a mile away though you know everyone involved in it (ie the other driver) should know better, but you know it's going to happen and you prepare for it. At best. At worst, you get blindsided and need a new car and/or are dead.

So, no, I would much rather deal with the "Are they turning here? Maybe here? How about this next one? Alright, it's been two minutes, I guess they're just an idiot and.. Nope! They turned! Man, what an early signal" over someone who doesn't signal at all.

Unless your turn signal light is out. And, it not really being something you'll get caught for, and is fucking expensive to fix, you just don't fix... not to mention it's one of the many things that is difficult to diagnose from the inside of your car. Especially if it keeps clicking. Or there's the instances where it doesn't click at all... Because lots of people require transport but don't have $20,000 to spend on a new car.

Then there's the instances where using it is pointless, like when a lane splits in two, and you take the new lane. It's not like you're in anyone's way.

Maybe you are missing an arm, and haven't gone to the shop to put in a new device to use your signals.

Maybe you're just as big of an ass on the road as everyone else... sorry, forgot, that never happens. Everyone else is the tool... :)

Agreed, but I'm just saying it's so easy to forget to signal or signal by mistake, that you're better off just ignoring what people's signal lights are doing anyway. Just assume everyone around you is about to slow down or do something unexpected.

Which is why I love driving a stick shift. Nothing like their panicked braking when I down shift from 5th to 3rd.
(For those unfamiliar with manual transmissions, down shifting = deceleration w/o brake lights)
So, you sacked the cocky khaki Kicky Sack sock plucker?
The second cocky khaki Kicky Sack sock plucker I've sacked since the sixth sitting sheet slitter got sick.

It makes me so angry! I wish there was more I could do to help her..but I guess one of her bestfriends, who I also know sorta well, was also pushing for the abortion. The girl who was forced to have the abortion really isn't that responsible of a person, but she was going to try and do better for that baby.
Too bad I'm not a lawyer..although I do know one..

On turn signals:
I don't like it when people don't use them. Although I sometime use the wrong one or forget it's on since one of the blinky buttons are broken. So, I don't know how much of a 'say' I have (as a new driver).
