I'm so sick of people in my country, including in my immediate circle of friends and family, being prejudiced assholes. In fact, I'm sick of the fact that we as a species have the capability to hate other members of our species for no other reason than that they're a member of a group. Just because another member of that group did something horrible, doesn't mean they're all horrible! By that logic, my whole family, being a white, middle-class nuclear family living in regional Australia are all rapists and murderers! Of course we aren't! Just like not every Muslim immigrant is a terrorist, and not every Indian immigrant wants to steal our jobs! FFS, people, peace and love! It's not that difficult!
I know this makes me a terrible person, but I'm going to enjoy watching the media over the next couple months, just to see if the fact that the attacks in Oslo were done by a fundamentalist Christian changes ANYTHING about this stupid country's attitude towards religion. OF COURSE CHRISTIANITY DOESN'T ACTUALLY TEACH TO DO THAT. BUT NEITHER DOES ISLAM. IT'S CRAZY PEOPLE DOING STUPID SHIT. IS THAT SO HARD TO GET THROUGH YOUR STUPID HEADS?!
I mean, I understand why my Grandmother dislikes my best friend for being gay, even if I disagree with her stance, she feels that her religion disallows it. I get that. I disagree, but there's a reason. There is no good reason for my father, who is otherwise a good man, to make jokes about my friend behind his back. Hell, he even likes the guy, he just can't seem to get over the fact that he likes other guys? So fucking what? If it grosses you out a little, just don't think about it! There is no good reason for my father to agree with banning the burqa (which in this context I use to mean the slit for the eyes up to the full facial covering), except for identification purposes. For him to say that 'it's one rule for us and another for them' is BULLSHIT. Our fashions don't really include anything that fully covers the face, so we don't wear anything like that. If, however, I want to walk around in, say, a Guy Fawkes mask, I CAN AND NOBODY CAN STOP ME UNLESS I WALK INTO A SECURE AREA (ie. identification).
