So I got a letter through the door today from Virgin Media telling me they were going to double my broadband download speeds to 100Mb/s. Yay.

Half an hour ago my Internet connection went dead, and resetting the router isn't helping. This isn't the first time it has done this either. Tell you what, Virgin Media. How about you keep your speed upgrade and work on actually getting it working properly in the first place?

Why bother producing a working product when you can promise something so much better than what the user currently has?

Huh, looks like it was a nationwide thing and it made the news: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16611686

But that happens every few weeks in my area so I assumed it was just that again.

LEMSIP!!!

Why does it have to taste SO horrifyingly disgusting??

Why can't medicine actually taste nice?

Darn you Lemsip! Either start tasting better, or stop working so well so I won't have to force you upon myself everytime I get a cold.

Off I go to boil the kettle and pour in about 5 tea-spoons of sugar into a mug which will only vaguely hide the rotten taste of this horrid (but amazingly effective) drink.

bleagh.

I'll be taking a giant spoon of manuka honey once I get this Lemsip business done.

Then I'll be wearing about 10 layers of clothing in bed with my electric blanket on full-blast.... I'm gonna sweat this mo-fo out of me if I can. Fingers crossed I'll feel somewhat human before my interview tomorrow. eeek!

Now I'm procrastinating in the hope that I might fall asleep before I get around to making this devil spawn of a drink.

*shudders*

I kicked that lemsip's ass!! It was blackcurrant flavour so not as bad as the real deal lemsip.

And, for good measure I drank it out of my Wonder Woman mug... I bet she wouldn't be so upset by a drink (no matter how repugnant it is).

And giant spoon of manuka honey has been taken.

Yay for kicking illness in the nuts!

There needs to be some sort of punishment by law for programs that just suddenly say "FATAL ERROR" when something goes wrong, and do nothing more.

Balls. I apparently only brought the cough medicine stuff that is ONLY for cough suppression, not the one that has like 12 drugs in it to improve everything. I did remember to bring some dayquil horse sized pills at least. Hopefully those kick in soon.

There also needs to be some sort of punishment by law for programs and functions that only respond with "Error. Contact your network administrator" and no error codes when you're logged in AS the Administrator.

Ugh. Bureaucracy/government frustration, as well as unclear deadlines! I just got e-mailed to say that instead of having until Feb. 7th, like I thought, I have until... tomorrow to either a) raise $4,500 or b) figure out how to tell my organization and all my teachers that the grant (see signature) that they are all excited about, is dead. I've asked every organization I'm even vaguely connected with (multiple times, in most cases) and have either gotten polite refusals or just no answer. And while I've gotten some small donations, none of my family/friends/acquaintances have enough money lying around to make this happen by 5pm tomorrow EST.

I was in the middle of concocting a crazy, last-ditch attempt to raise the money involving my knitting prowess and the kindness of strangers. But... now I have no time. Unexpectedly.

Dear internet commenters, here is how the world reads your comments on a software site:

"Doesnt work" = "You suck and I'm not even going to help you get it working for me because you just suck"
"Doesnt work on AwesomeNuts 2000" = "I can't get it working and I will now mislead everyone else running on my OS to think your software doesn't work"
"Can someone email this to me at tomatohead@muppets.gov" = "I am clearly in a privileged position so you shall all help me get this working"
"I got an error 401, but now it's working! Thank you!" = "HAHAHAHA I GOT IT WORKING LULZ I AM NOW BETTER THAN YOU ALL"
"Keygen plz" = "I permit you all to stare at my face on my property and demand I give my puppies for free"
"How to get working??????????" = "AAAA HELP I CANT READ AAAAA"
"It does not work." = "I am going to pretend I'm civilized just so I look better than that guy above me"
"$5?! That's an outrage! I can make that for free in 10 minutes!" = "Whadayyamean, you can't go faster than the speed of light? It's just c+1! I'm smarter than einstein!"
"Where can I get this app for WindowWashers 5000?" = "Why won't the guy at the laundry place send me pizzas?"

I know technology is big and scary, but you do realize the printer can three hole punch stuff for you, right? So you didn't have to print the documents out, then spend extra time to punch them? Oh, and figuring out how to set it to duplex? Not that difficult.

You have a printer that can 3 hole punch? I just use pre-punched paper.

So...I totally thought that I was going to be done with physics after this semester--that with this semester, I would be fulfilling the physics requirements for a chemistry major. Yes, I know they would have PREFERRED me to take the calculus-based physics (and so would I, for that matter), but the teacher I would have had to take it with has an absolutely horrid reputation, and my friends kept warning me against him, and apparently he doesn't do much calculus in his class anyway, and the non-Calculus-based one totally fulfills the prerequisite for Physical Chemistry! And my adviser totally thought it would be okay!

It appears I got it a little wrong, though. While the class I'm in now will get me into Physical Chemistry I and II, the third one requires calculus-based physics. I had stupidly thought that the prerequisite for II would be I, and the prerequisite for III would be II and didn't look at the situation more closely. In fact, it seems you could take them completely out of order if you really wanted to, because not one of them is a prerequisite for another! And, even more stupidly, I had thought that my adviser would have thought to tell me about something like this, had there been something like this.

Gah, I just hope they'll let me into the second semester of calculus-based physics next semester--that's the one I need and I'd get the good physics teacher. Even better would be if they were willing to waive the requirement, but I can't help but think they'll just be like, "fuck you, follow the rules" since I've already been doing my degree a little strangely.
This is my Tumblr, for the curious and/or bored. It mostly consists of random things/ideas I find interesting* and pictures of my friend Catherine.

*This might include but is not limited to: science, my research experiences, gender, feminism.

Rant: my older cat needs ear drops twice every day for the next week, and the look she gives me when I do it says she hates me and thinks I'm a horrible person. I wish it was easier to communicate with animals. It makes me feel sad seeing my little kitty giving me such an emotionally pained look when I'm helping her.

I learned quickly to never trust my academic adviser(s) at college. All the same, I can't speak for many schools, but at the college I went to, prerequisites were not enforced at all for specialized departments such as chemistry- so long as the classes you took met your requirements to graduate, you were all set. There was nearly always overlap on those two fronts, but on the cases where there wasn't, you could do what you wanted. Try asking around (students or faculty), seeing what the case is for your school- you might get some good news!

My dog had a lump taken out of her leg Tuesday, and so is stuck with a cone until the stitches come out Friday. She's also not allowed proper walks to make sure nothing happens to the stitches. We are pretty sure she now thinks that she is stuck inside with a cone on her head the rest of her life...wish there was some way to explain to her that it's for her own good and will be over soon, because she is spending most of the time looking very depressed at the moment!

I think with my friend Catherine it's made worse because the younger cat doesn't need the ear drops- so she just sees herself as being singled out for the bad experience. I hope everything goes well with your dog!

Ridiculously bad website design in league with unprofessionalism. Seriously, National Acrobatic Gymnastics Association (I hope I translated this more or less sense-preserving from German), if I check the dates for your trainer classes, it's nice of you to tell me there's one this summer.

You know what else would be nice? Making this entry in your awful table-style calender a link, so I could find out with a few clicks where it is, where to register until when or basic requirements.
Of course, 20 minutes later I have to admit that you couldn't possibly have linked this information because apparently it does not exist on the net (it might in some unfindable form, if any of you can think of words or combinations to search for other than "Trainer-C", "Lehrgang", "Ausbildung" "DSOB" and so on [roughly meaning "course" and "education"], PLEASE tell me).

There isn't even a phone number for the specific calender entries, and considering these events are usually organized by various regional associations (which one is, of course, not specified), I doubt calling the contact at the national association will get me anywhere - though I will if I can't figure it out another way.
This is SUCH a basic thing to provide, and yet they don't do it and cause a lot of unnecessary work for anyone interested.

Time for another street traffic related rant:

Dear driver of the black BMW
First of all: thanks for being the jerk stereotypically connected with your choice of vehicle. I fully understand that it's a nuisance that the driver in front of you didn't want to exceed the speed limit by more than 10km/h [6mph] and you obviously had to doubt whether that could mean you would not make the green light. Conveniently the street had two lanes going in your direction so I should probably congratulate you on the quick and precise change of lanes omitting turn signals or any loss of speed, but unfortunately I have to nitpick on a minor oversight on your part: you may not have figured that out, but the reason that second lane was all clear was in fact related to that loud sound that almost drowned out your stereo and the blue flashing lights that so rhythmically joined in through your rearview mirror. I'm sure the driver of that ambulance was about as terrified as me when he had to swerve into the oncoming lane I was travelling in, carefully balancing the chances of hitting me head on or tumbling the heavy vehicle over on its side.
I hope something nasty and fairly irritating happens to you in the near future!
