The doxycycline is causing massive heartburn.

Like, dear god this hurts. I'm in the process of moving and have almost no food in the house to help suppress the acid, and I have no antacids.

Holy hell this hurts so bad.

According to the Internet, a "healthcare tax" means we are now living in "the Fourth Reich." This post was accompanied by the image of Obama with a Hitler mustache, and followed by an enthusiastic call to "hang" the President and another declaring him a "nigger." Apparently my knowledge of history is all wrong - violent racist white guys were the real victims in the Third Reich, and black politicians were the real Nazis! The more you know, eh?

I really hate smartphones. I hated them before I even saw a real one just because they're called "phones", when they're clearly pocket computers which happen to use the same kind of radio as phones out of convenience. Then there's the software or "apps" which conflate software with content and make both more difficult to use. The wikipedia "app" on my phone is exactly the same software as the plain brower, only it has a dark theme and you can only read m.wikipedia.org on it; and yet it's presented as entirely separate. Which means to follow a link to a reference you have to close "wikipedia" and open the "browser". You can't just download a file or sync with a repository either, you have to register your details with some giant combine data harvester of a corporation. Even open source projects with their own websites don't host binary installers anywhere other than the official marketplace.

It's part of the trend of general purpose computers being disguised as applicances. It's like buying a car and only refering to it as a "Tesco Wagon", without realising that you could drive anywhere else in the same vehicle just as easily.

As long as desktops and laptops don't start being as locked-in as smartphones, I'm happy, because I don't want to have to fiddle with my phone as much as my computer. So as long as Apple doesn't lock in apps or the cloud, Windows doesn't force Metro on desktops, and nobody starts picking up Android for computers... waaaaiiiiiit.

Hah. I was actually thinking of getting an android laptop and installing ARM Debian on it, but I'm not sure I want to support where this is going.

I find myself rubbing my eyes a lot and I usually do so without removing my glasses first. So I'm sure that's where most of my smudges come from.

I do, actually, so I figure that's where it comes from.

I wanted to buy a box set of books and accidentally bought ebook versions. I'm pretty upset, because I can't return the ebook, but it was expensive enough that I don't want to rebuy the physical version. URRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, my wife was able to get a refund on an ebook set one time, although it was to get the same books just not in a single ebook. Definitely doesn't hurt to ask.

I just lost all my Firefox tabs for some reason. The browser crashed, and when I opened it up again some FoxClocks 'Update Successful' page or other was the only open tab. Hit the back button, got the Session Restore page, but it was blank and didn't allow me to restore my old session. Now I can't remember what I had open.

Is half an hour's travel time outside of whim-range, then? Because I regularly drive longer distances for more spurious reasons, and I live in the part of the U.S. where everything's close together.

Ptolom is from the UK, though, where even a US 'close together' is probably seen as fairly far apart.

Having lived somewhere with a similar arrangement (though the bus was only 4 times a day, and the last one back was at 5, and it didn't run on a Sunday) the only thing I can suggest is try to befriend someone with a car (this didn't work that well for me - I ended up resorting to going to matinee movies on Saturdays with a friend, and staying on the internet for the rest of the time).

I'm part of a campaign to promote awareness on the effects of smoking. I get this one argument over and over and over: "smoking can't reduce your lifespan, I've seen lots of old people smoke."

Of course, that'd send out alarm bells and a declaration of fallacy-war on these boards. But not really to average laymen. Anyone got a good response?

No, I'm pretty sure labyrinthitis is when the patient is suddenly trapped within a large and convuluted maze. Complications may include Minotaurs.
