Or just unconventional :) IIRC 'an' in front of a word beginning with an h sound only tends to happen when the first syllable is unemphasised.

It's rather annoying how some people have a habit of interrupting all the time, yet it seems to minor to call them out on it. Judging by how the person I'm thinking of, in particular, does it... I'm guessing it's more a lack of thought than anything else. So it could be hard to point out if they don't realise they're doing it.

Either way, I think I'm just going to start to talk notably louder and drown out their interruptions to make a point or at least make them realise what they're doing. Sure, it's fine every so often, but if it's happening several times every time you have a conversation with a few people and them: it needs to stop.

Minor pant-question combi: I'm going to miss a midterm exam that counts for 16% of my grade due to surgery, and I can't do it another time. My original plan to graduate cum laude has already become significantly more difficult because of this, and I'm not really sure whether something like that is really worth stressing over.

Does your school have a policy about that sort of thing? Surely you should be able to either reschedule or have the weight transferred to the final or something.

Well, I hoped that second thing would be possible, but it turns out it isn't. What I *can* do is choose to not take the exam and do it next semester in addition to my course load there. Problem is, to graduate cum laude you have to graduate in 3 years (which is the 'default length' for a BSc in the Netherlands), and rescheduling the whole thing does not make that any easier. I also don't think keeping the straight-A thing up is going to be as easy with an increased course load next semester. Basically, I think it might just not be worth the trouble (especially as I already *do* tend to get stressed out a little too quickly).

By "it", do you mean the midterm or the entire course?

That...blows. All I can suggest is to talk to both the prof and the department and make sure they understand that you're missing it out of medical necessity, and that the current option would delay your graduation. Hopefully you can work something out.

The entire course. Yeah, it's ridiculous, I know. Especially as the prof said that if I fail the course then, he'd be willing to make an exception and give me another try because I had surgery. Why then not just let me do the midterm another time or not make it count this freaking time!? Grumblemumble.

Trying to. :) But if I can't work anything out, I'm most likely just going to make the exam and pass with a less awesome grade (a 6 or a 7 or so - what's that in American grading style? C/B?).

I think that's insipid. I had to miss a test once and they transferred the weight to the final. It was horribly stressful, but there is no reason you should be penalized because you can't work out a schedule because you are having surgery. You may need to take it above the professor's head. There should be a policy preventing this.

Hell, one of my classes transferred the weight of an assignment to the final when I simply forgot to do the assignment. Not allowing that for a situation where you have a genuine medical thing seems totally idiotic.

Not usually, but I still feel like I'm wasting their time, when there's a duplicate I've not seen, or I'm not using the right development version, or the bug is in a library they're not responsible for etc.

This. I try not to feel bad since I don't know the codebase (nor, typically, the language). It does not always work.

Trigger warning (Self harm) to be safe:

Spoiler:
There was a talk on local TV last night from a popular "psychic" who's been adamantly claiming the world will end in a few weeks. But he also admitted he might be wrong, but he thinks it's a fun thing to talk about and "it's not going to hurt anyone if we don't die". And of course it gets him money.

And then this article from the LA Times says a NASA scientist gets letters every week or so from a young person (down to 11 years old) who say they're ill or contemplating suicide because of the coming doomsday.
In Minecraft, I use the username Rirez.

Password = toryscum (or is that just me?)

This really, really upsets me : royal hoax call nurse dies. I'm not sure what bothers me more :
the two thoughtless idiots who thought this would be funny without stopping to think that some overworked nurse would pick up their call, and from that point of view, no it's not f**ing funny,
the hospital management who, like healthcare management all over the uk rather than standing by their staff instantly declared a witch hunt, or
the uk media in general, who've spent the last couple of months critiquing nurses not finding time to care as much as they would like for patients.

Here's an idea, I don't think many nurses (or most front line public servants) turn up to work in order to sit on their arse, draw their massive salary and insult the public. If they act like they haven't got the time to do their job properly it's because they are overworked, understaffed, underpaid and they don't have the time! Cut them some slack, don't swear at them, don't physically assault them, don't employ some parasitic ambulance chasing lawyer to finish their career and don't make pathetic , immature stunts on public media at their expense. Just a thought.

Well, management should probably have reprimanded the nurse - patient confidentiality is something we get training in from D1 of clinical school, and the course they made us do was hospital wide, (and I assume there are equivalents in every trust). I don't know how far they went though, so it might have been too far due to the fact that they had to be shown to be setting an example to the media, but it's definitely not something that should have been condoned.
