That's exactly how we give dates in Dutch, so I guess that's why I'm used to DD-MM-YY.

I never made that connection, though... it does make sense that way.

You hit the nail on the head there. In Dutch, we say day, month, year. Like most of the people in the rest of the world :P

I would be thrown too, I guess, by YY-MM-DD. If it were YYYY-MM-DD, then it would be a lot easier and instantly recognisable (for me, personally)

I struggle to work out the MM-DD-YYYY/DD-MM-YYYY difference between US and UK stylings, however. Every May 5th I'm completely stumped!

But seriously, I hate it that whenever I see a 7 in the month date, I have to count on my fingers all the way up to July. I have a part of my brain that deals with simple arithmetic completely missing, it seems. Being unexpectedly faced with someone who's switched the MM & DD parts, my brain almost fries. 09/07/2011? Is that 9th of July, or September 7th? It doesn't help that when I speak dates out loud, sometimes I say The Fourth Of July, and sometimes I say July The Fourth, and sometimes even July Fourth, if I'm feeling particularly thrifty.

It turned out that the date was August 9th. I mean the 9th of August. I mean 11-8-9. Wait, 8-9-11. Hang on: 9/8/11. Or should that be 09/08/2011? 09.08.11? 9.8.2011? 2011:9:8? 2011-08:09?

Machines that only accept digit inputs, or databases that sort alphanumerically. 19JUL2011 would precede 19JUN2011 when sorted.

What, like 1 = Jan, 2 = Feb?

But seriously, MMDDYYYY is in the same category as imperial measurements and the World Series for Baseball - Things that should all be renamed.

I suggest "US dates", "US measurements" and "US Series baseball".

Basically. If you're working in Excel, Excel already has a sort by feature that sorts by the month if you input it correctly, due to Microsoft converting the date to a five digit number.

Considering the Toronto Blue Jays have won before, no, it is not a national series. You could make a case for the North American Baseball Championship Series, but most sports commentators call it "The Fall Classic" or "The October Classic".

Kindof. It's a lot easier if you can just let the auto-sorting handle it in string form, you can of course parse out the date, then sort based on that, but it's a lot of hassle, and not actually available in many cases (say, in explorer sorting files by name).

//Shrug// I don't take offense at the oddity being pointed out. Honestly, the original intent of the creators of the NL and AL annual competition (National League and American League) was to spread the competition throughout the world. However, since only a few countries outside of North America are interested in American Baseball, it kind of stalled.

Japan has some great competition, but travel time would be a pain in the ass. A lot of South American and Central American teams have good leagues too, but not up to MLB standards. Most of the players for "National" teams come from MLB rosters, and so when we do the annual world competiton, those that do choose to compete can do so for their home countries, much like the Olympics.

There is stuff in the only free space in my lab, which is where I like to keep myself when I'm working in there. Someone has replaced me with a guitar and a standard lamp.
*grumbles and commences shifting stuff*

Also, I say lab. It's more of a small bedroom with electronics and microscopy stuff crammed into it. And an awesome stereo. I need to start spending more time in there.

Toronto's the only non-American team in Major League Baseball, though (the only one of the four major American leagues to not have 'National' in its name), since Montreal packed up and moved to Washington DC (and became the Nationals, oddly enough).

The National Hockey League, however, has six Canadian teams and twenty-four American ones.

Dear people I have to deal with from another company: Can you please not say something is available to test, and then several days later when I get around to testing, and trying, and trying again, and finally come back with "it's not working, am I doing something wrong" answer "Oh, it's not actually available to test, sorry".

If it was one incident, whatever, but this is at least the third time... I don't mind waiting, I do mind wasting my time.
