There is a lot to be said about a Leak.
You didn't say much.

Is this rain water?
Highly unlikely.
You live in a high-rise in a City.

What kind of water is this?
eeww.

How much is it leaking?
Have sheets of ceiling fallen in, yet?

I have seen leaks that did not seem too bad.
Until a sheet of ceiling fell in. What a mess.

In November 2012, I woke up to Rain in my bed.
No electricity and it was Raining in my bed.

I moved my bed.

I noticed it while I was cleaning up around my apartment. I noticed some water drops on my coffee table and looked up to see a wet spot on the ceiling about four or five inches wide and three feet long. I called the building manager, who called the maintenance people, and told me that they'd be here in Monday morning. The building manager thinks it might be from a water heater pipe.

I went to the grocery store for a couple hours and came back and it appears to have dried up now. Weird.

Hot!
Human caused Global Warming has reached the point where things will spontaneously combust.
I saw the sunlight reflected from a piece of polished metal.

Where that reflected light fell on thin plastic, the plastic crumpled and smoldered.
It may have been dust burning off, not plastic smoldering. Still! That's Hot!

God! It's Hot!
!I'm fucking Melting!
.....ahhhh.....

All of that is true from My perspective, on the ground.
I know the world is not burning up.

I am in a Pocket of High Pressure.
Weird little Pocket.

This little weather anomaly is, sort of, famous in Local Circles.
I listened to Weather Guys talk about How Nice it is.

They also talked about Why no one would Live here.
It was So nowhere. It still is.

Then, nowhere did not have Radio.
Today, nowhere has Wi-Fi.

There are cooling fog banks both North and South.
I saw one. It is about five miles south.

Weird little Pocket of High Pressure.
When it breaks. Ouch.

I expect High Winds.
..Ok. Ok. Hot is ok..

Much better than High Winds that break the Wi-Fi.

I was thinking.
In the late 1200's and early 1300's Those Europeans and Middle Easterners with a little help from Asians left written records of Biological Warfare.

They tossed rotting corpse of other human beings that had died or were dying of Bubonic Plague at other human beings. (What ding-dongs.)

They often used a Catapult.
We, humans, used Catapults!

The first time I read that, I thought
What was That like? Standing around hoeing a row, feeding a chicken, gossiping, then...
(Whoosh. Thud!) A rotting corpse falls from Heaven. (Yuck!)

The answer is, "It would be Terrifying."

That is Terrorism.
That's a bad thing to do.
Don't do That.

Laugh about it? Yes.
Plot it and carry the plan through? No.

Around the year 2000 I was first introduced to the word Terrorist used the way it is used by US mass media, today.
I had no idea What the man was talking about. He had a far off look. He was an intellectual in good standing.

He tried to explain Terrorists.
What they are and why we are frightened.

He was talking like there was a New Threat, I was remiss in my duties for not being aware of and 'up to steam'.

Today, Fifteen years later, I'm sort of pissed off.
Really?? Terrorists??! Yours or Theirs? (asshole)

That AssHole and all the TV AssHoles and Cheney the Crowned Queen of the AssHoles are all talking about Humans being AssHoles.

There is Nothing New Under The Sun!
New Tools for a cleaner softer bunch of AssHoles.

Fucking People have been scaring the living shit out of each other sense Cane and Able.

Rumor has it, Cane was an AssHole.
Some people say Able had it coming.

I didn't know either one of them.

go to a different teacher.
Not to complain, to listen.

Your teacher has never explained it to someone that thinks like you.
A different Physics instructor may be able to explain it.

If you're asking about kinematics, you may get more physical and less abstract explanations from the science board than the maths board (but I'm sure either would be glad to explain) :)

That's the whole point of this thread. Rant away.

Here, I have a rant-complaint too: my neighbors directly across the alley smoke on their porch steps almost constantly, which means I have to keep all my windows closed and not turn on my swamp cooler or else it will suck all their smoke right inside my house and make me sick. It also means I need to hold my breath and run from my front door to my car through their cloud of smoke. There's no legal recourse and the landlord doesn't care, he smokes himself anyway. I've asked them politely to smoke indoors or elsewhere, even offered to set them up a nice bench area on the other side of their place where a building would shield my from their smoke, and then yelled at, then cried and pleaded with, them to stop. There is no hope. I just have to hole up inside my house and keep all my doors and windows shut and suffer the heat forever. Or until they die, which will hopefully be soon as they're old and infirm anyway and probably have cancer at this rate.

Ususally debit requires a pin and is a direct draw from your money-holding (checking/savings) accounts.

Credit generally requires no pin, and only a signature. Notably, these often are based on a line of "credit" so will not automatically drain from your bank account.

I much prefer the safety of the latter, even if my card is compromised the worst they could do is max out my credit limit before either the card company or myself detects the fraud. No affect on my rent check clearing.

In the US, most debit cards are able to be used "as credit"; I'm not really sure how the internal banking mechanism of it works, but I can take my debit card to any POS terminal, swipe it, select "credit" when it asks (I could also select "debit" when swiping my credit card, but that asks for a PIN that doesn't exist so I don't know what it would do), and then not have to punch in any PIN. (And depending on the bank's/store's policy, maybe have to sign a receipt like a credit card instead). I don't need to have any line of credit with the card-issuing bank to do this. When the transaction posts it comes straight out of my checking account, and I would presume that the available-balance check it presumably does beforehand checks the balance of my checking account rather than my (potentially nonexistent) credit limit. Although I have heard stories of people overdrawing their accounts using debit cards this way, but I'm not sure how that's possible unless it just doesn't do any balance check beforehand (which sounds ridiculously insecure), or maybe made-but-uncleared transactions don't deduce from the available balance so many small transactions made in one day could exceed the available balance without warning.

I'm not sure if debit transactions in general, or debit-run-as-credit at least, have the same kind of fraud protection, where you can dispute a transaction and have it taken off your statement. I believe I've heard that they do not.

Oddly, in the US the customer can be liable for fraudulent transactions where a PIN is used.

So I'll continue to sign away.

It happens either when POS credit card machines or the servers that collect their transaction information are hacked, often because the vendors say, "encryption? Nah."* Solution: pay cash. For everything else, there's Discover. Or mastercard. Whatever.

The first compromise was in response to the big Target hack over the holiday season and I'm thinking the second one is associated with the recent Home Depot breach.

The Target thing infuriates me. The gist of it is, an outside contractor - phone installer, security system installer, I forget what, something like that - needed a VPN to get into the store to set up whatever, probably monitor, etc. Perfectly reasonable request, we do that sort of thing all the time at my work.

Target IT not only didn't lock the VPN to just whatever equipment the contractor needed (which is what we do), but the network the contractor was on was the same network of their POS systems and the one that went back to Corporate (both of which should be segregated from the rest of the network).

Even if the VPN wasn't locked to the equipment, the worst the hacker should have been able to breech is... the phone system? Maybe turn the lights off?

A store like that should be running three networks - the POS network, the Computers that talk to Corporate Network, and the Everything Else network. Instead, they were running one.

And then they tried to blame it on the contractor. Which is sorta like blaming your house break in on the gardener when you gave the gardener a special door on to your property that let him walk anywhere (and then put a lock on the door that a three year old could pick).

“Haven’t you been following it?” he asks.
Following it? ….Does he follow it on FaceBook?

Follows it to Where?
To a place that is vehemently against vaccines.

He talks to everyone.
Where does he get his Authority to Speak.

Well…The Man is an American!
All Americans Have An Opinion!

What’s up with that?
He is a Retired Old Guy, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.

He had a High School Education in the 1960’s.
He joined one of the branches of the US military.

While he was in the Military, if not before,
His government immunized him against everything they knew how to immunize a person against.

He only remembers the Small Pox one.
It left a scar he can show you, today.

After Military Service he got a Job and took Training Courses.
He learned to be a Real Somebody. He Retired as a Boss.

He is still pretty Bossy.
He speaks with Authority.

The man would not know an Immune Responds if it Bit Him in the Ass.
He did get some of it Right.

He must have gotten very ill from his Small Pox vaccine.
That may have been as ill as that man has ever been.

Because! He was Vaccinated!
That is, Just, My Opinion!

EDIT: Same Rant, Different Day.
I always knew there were Bad People.
People that were not good at being people.

Inside my own family we had people that were Crap at being people.
Lazy, Self Involved, Selfish, Small Minded, Defiantly Undereducated and Dangerously Overconfident.

I knew there were such people.
I knew and liked some.

(shrug) Family.
What ya' going to do?

......So many Americans fit the description.
Why??

Were Americans always a clear Majority Jerks?
Why?

These people Want Rush Limbaugh to lead them.
They honestly Do!

A clear majority of the people I hear speak in 3D flesh are mimicking what they hear on media.
Like the creative little souls that they are, they add More Hate. Everyday in Every way.

I was told our form of Government is For the People.
Our form of Government is created By The People as they live and act as Citizens.
Our form of Government is a reflection Of The People.

I heard it Twice, today.
Twice, two different people told me,
"The Government will Never do anything right."

ok....These people are what the adults were talking about, when I was a child.
Crap.

The People will have the Government they deserve.

I'll be darned.
Those were Prophetic Words.
The people of the US Hate their Government.

Even the people wearing Uniforms.
Maybe, especially people wearing Uniforms.

It is an Anger Fest.
Hate of the Government is only a way to focus The Hate.

After Hate has been so well developed as to be contagious,
The media can Aim that Ill Will and the People will willingly act.

Of course, the mean Bastards frighten me.
They also Piss Me Off.

Oh...If I open my mouth they become more angry at me than they are at the Government.
I can hardly believe the things that Piss Me Off.

Some JackAss way speaking with authority about Jimmy Carter.
Why should I care?

We agreed that Mr, Carter was a nice man.
That JackAss told me, "He should have stayed in Peanuts."

My response was, "You criticize your superiors without hesitation. Don't you?"
That made him angry at me.

Why?
It's true.

I thought it is a good jumping off place for a conversation about who and how we criticize.

Love In's may have been stupid.
They were not one bit more stupid that the Hate Fests.

New Rant:

Why the Hell can't I have a Rabies Vaccine?
Why can't I wear that Frontline, Anti-Flea and Anti-Tick stuff?

Why?
Dogs and Cats can!

I have been told,
"No!" "Sit! Stay!"

but not Why.

It appears you can get a Rabies vaccine, at least in the UK (http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/rabies-vaccination).
Also, there is insect repellent for humans

That is so great!
Thank you.

They have a few standards I might not be able to meet.
The first and most important is being in the UK.

You guys are So Lucky.
Here is the another standard I can not meet, at the moment.
Spoiler:
Travellers to high-risk areas for stays of more than one month where there is also limited access to medical care and particularly to easy post-exposure prophylaxis.

Travellers to high-risk areas for stays of less than one month who may be exposed to rabies because of their travel activities and limited access to post-exposure medical care.

High Risk?
What the Heck?

well...?...The UK had more Rabies than the US had Ebolia.
If there was a vaccine for Ebolia, the pro-vaccine crowd would be getting it.

Rabies prevention in travellers is a controversial issue.
According to experts, the decision to vaccinate results from an individual risk assessment based on the duration of stay, the likelihood of engagement in at-risk activities, the age of the traveller, the rabies endemicity and access to appropriate medical care in the country of destination.

I'm still not understanding something.
Why would it be controversial?
It's a Vaccine!
Take it and become Immune!

Like Chemisty.
It hurts.

Then you need never think of it again.
That is not a difficult decision for me.

This is Why I want the vaccine.
From your link:
The majority of patients who have sustained a high-risk injury abroad were not vaccinated against rabies before travelling and were not properly treated abroad.

I think it is much better to be immune.
I like looking the little Bastards in the eye and saying, "Go ahead, bite me."

I don't Like it when they bite me.
The fucking worrying about Rabies gets on my nerves, more.

Do you have a link for Human Insecticide?
It might be fun to see Why that works for others and does not work for me.

Is it DEET?
DEET works.

DEET has to be reapplied every day.
Of course, the stuff dogs use might not work for a dog that takes a Hot Bath, everyday.

It doesn't make you fully immune. If dis mean you don't need a bunch of stuff of you get bit though.

why?

I think I am fully immune to the stuff I have been vaccinated against.
Am I Wrong?

How much immunity should I be expecting?
Can we run a test to check Antibody Titer?

This is going to be the worst sunburn I've ever had because I flat out forgot to put on sunscreen and I spent more than four hours in direct tropical sunlight this morning. Hurray.

Vaccinations do run out after a while depending on the type. Rabies is probably because the consequences of catching it are so devastating that you need boosters after you get bitten. However, if you've been vaccinated you have 2 days to find a hospital rather than 1, and you don't need the immunoglobulin infusion which is a human blood product (so has risks in and of itself) and not available in all places, so you'd have to go somewhere else and cut your time where you were staying short.

I have two powered speakers, and there's something wrong with them. One has mute/almost mute tweeter and the other has the big element somehow not really producing sound. They weren't too expensive originally but not cheap either. Still, they were nice when they worked. I'm not really qualified to fix or analyze the problem(s), but the cost of having them repaired by someone who is could easily go close to or even above the original price. Just taking them to be recycled feels unsatisfying too - though I don't know if they are beyond (reasonable) help.

I guess I'll just try taking one of them apart and see if there's soldering problems or some other obvious thing.

Edit: Looks like the elements are attached so that detaching them would break the casing. Maybe not completely, but the surface would be ruined. The electronic parts look okay, as far as I can tell. Maybe I'll just give up with them.

I had a similar problem with a set of speakers.
I was nearly as unhappy as you are.

I had given up.
I had not taken the initiative to toss them out, yet.

One day on a whim, I plugged them in and They Worked!
I have no idea why.

You could try that.
Tell them you have given up.

Unplug them. Ignore them.
Don't even Look at them for a day or so.

Then Try 'em.
They might work.

If they don't,
The price of that sort of thing has fallen like a rock.

For $20.00 US they can be replaced with a pair of adequate speakers.

It happened twice.
A second time I knocked one of the speakers over.
Then neither one worked.

Two days unplugged fixed it.
I have no idea why.

It makes no sense,
but it's true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabies
The consequences of catching it are devastating.
Death almost always occurs 2 to 10 days after first symptoms.

Only one person had ever lived after exhibiting symptoms.
Now; With advanced medical care,
there is an 8% survival rate.

With advanced medical care,
Ebolia has a higher survival rate.

Those symptoms?
What are those symptoms?

FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS!
The period between infection and the first flu-like symptoms is typically 2 to 12 weeks in humans.

Everything! Has Flu Like Symptoms.
Even Hypochondria!

How long does a person need to wait?
From exposure to onset of Symptoms that herald the last 72 hours of life?
How long do we wait for Symptoms?

Incubation periods as short as four days and longer than six years have been documented, depending on the location and severity of the contaminated wound and the amount of virus introduced.

Four Days to Six Years.
oh. Do you find that a Reassuring Window?

The clock does not start again at every exposure.
The clock starts running at first exposure.
The clock continuers to run until six years after last exposure.

Every little headache, might be Rabies.
Thirsty? oh, yeah. Why? Rabies?

What a weird little dark cloud to have following a person.
Hypochondria is to be avoided. It reduces quality of life.

I'd rather have the vaccine than the Hypochondria.

My real risk is very low.
A placibo vaccine is all I really need.

Then, if I get Rabies,
I'll think it is the Flu, until I'm too dead to worry about Rabies.

Nah.
That's for AIDS.
Rabies is worse.

edit:
Or; Better.
It all depends upon how you feel about being sick, I suppose.
Rabies kicks a person's ass and gets it over with. AIDS lingers.
